With the festive season over, January and February look dull, grey and depressing. But there is something to look forward to: The Chinese New

Year.

Based on a combination of lunar and solar

dates, the Chinese New Year falls on a

different day each year, usually in January or

February. This year the date to celebrate is

3rd February. Each year is allocated the

name of one of twelve animals: Rat, Ox,

Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Sheep,

Monkey, Rooster, Dog and Boar. 2011 is the

Year of the Rabbit.

The Chinese New Year is also symbolic of

the end of winter and the start of spring, and

many traditions and rituals surround the

occasion. Fireworks have always been an

integral part of the celebrations, with the

belief that the noise scares away evil spirits

and wakes the dragons who symbolise

strength, integrity and good luck.

This is the time for new beginnings. Out

with the old and in with the new. Before

New Year’s Eve all debts are paid off,

houses are cleaned and any arguments

resolved. Celebrations start on New Year’s

Eve with a family dinner and everyone pays

homage to their ancestors and

household gods. All windows

and doors are opened at

midnight to let go of the old

year and to bring the new one

in. The celebrations last over

two weeks.

Homes are decorated with

red and gold paper

decorations which represent

wealth and happiness.

Orange fruits of all kinds

symbolise good health, long

life happiness and wealth.

Tangerines and oranges are

particularly favoured because the words for

them sound similar to luck and wealth.

Chinese also exchange gifts and give children

two small red envelopes containing crisp, new

‘lucky money’. Happiness is said to come in

twos, so gifts are given in pairs. Brand new

clothes and shoes are also worn on New

Year’s Day - again to symbolise a new start.

Food is extremely important at this time of

year and each dish is highly symbolic.

Chicken or duck represent family togetherness

and are therefore served whole. Fish

symbolises a wish for abundance in the

coming year. Again, it is served whole

because this encourages a happy end to the

year as well as a successful start. Noodles

stand for a long life and shouldn’t be cut.

Desserts include Sticky Rice Cake, because

their sweetness suggests a sweet life and their

circular shape epitomizes family reunions.

Chinese New Year can be seen as a time to

start with a blank slate, so if your New Year’s

resolutions have been broken already, here’s

another chance to try again. Prepare for this

occasion by thinking of the changes you want

to make in your life. Book a table at your

favourite Chinese restaurant, or order a take-

away, invite your friends and family around

and shout Gung hei fat choi!

As we head towards Spring, Little Havens Children’s Hospice needs more green fingered friends to help them out.

Every Friday, the charity’s very own

“Garden Club” can be found in their green

vests potting, planting and pruning in the 20

acres of grounds that the only children’s

hospice in Essex resides in. Heath Centre

Manager Kat Clark has been looking after

the club for the past five years and the

Garden Club currently stands 25 members

strong – and the charity is always looking for

volunteers of all ages, and of all abilities to

join them. Kat says:

“It costs £2.3 million a year to keep Little

Havens open and the Garden Club work

extremely hard to keep the gardens at the

hospice looking as stunning as they do. Even

the flower beds and trees at the front of the

hospice are important to the whole

environment at Little Havens. We’re

extremely conscious of the first impressions

that families have when they come to look

around or stay for the first time.

Many of our families use the gardens to

relax and spend time with each other. To be

able to walk around in the privacy and

beauty of the gardens, just

Mum, Dad and children, with

no worries is a relief and much

loved part of the hospice.”

72 year old Doreen Roberts

has been a member of the club

for five years, and along with

her husband, David, 74, has

seen the club go from strength

to strength. She says:

“I love gardening and always

have done. What I really love

about coming here is the sense

of community spirit. We have

proper meetings where we

discuss ideas and look at what needs doing in

the gardens, and of course there’s the social

aspect – the Garden Club are a lovely bunch

of people.”

Little Havens is always on the lookout for

gardening tools and equipment such as

spades, forks, wheelbarrows, hoses and reels

and rakes – new or second hand – that need a

good home. The charity is also looking to

expand the vegetable garden so is asking

members of the community to donate any

unwanted large pots or herb troughs. If you

would like to join the club or make a

donation of tools then please contact Kat

Clark by calling 01702 426222 or emailing

[email protected]

A volunteer gardener is also needed who can

spare four or more hours a week on a

Monday or Friday to help manage the

grounds. It’s a unique role with the

opportunity to develop new and existing

skills, to be at the heart of the local

community and part of an enthusiastic team.

The Crown dates from around the late

18th century. It was originally only

about a third of the size it went on to

become and only sold beer. It was

originally owned hy the Heber family

but by 1846, the pub and the area

behind it was owned by the brewery

company “Wells & Perry.” The large

open space behind the building was

often used for entertainments such as

open air boxing and football matches.

There was also an annual circus and

fairground. This area eeventually became

the Kingsway Cinema. The Crown also sold

coal, wool, newspapers and milk.

In the 1920s, The Waggon and Horses had a

taproom with wooden floors, benches and

two tables. There was an open range where

the men could roast potatoes and chestnuts

whilst having a drink or playing darts. There

was also a saloon bar and a parlour where

customers could play skittles, cards or

dominoes.

The earliest recorded Inns in Hadleigh were

The Castle which was built in 1651 and The

Crown. The Waggon and Horses was first

mentioned as an “Ale-House” in 1841. The

difference between an Inn and an Alehouse

was that an Inn provided food,

accommodation and stables whereas an Ale-

House sold beer and ale that had been

brewed on the premises.

The Castle was built on the site of some

cottages in the High Street and was

originally called “The Boar’s head Inn.” The

name changed to “The Blue Boar” around

1755 and yet again in 1823 to “The Castle.”

Before the 1900s, there was no

running water to the Inn and water

had to be drawn from a well situated

behind the building. There was also

an open stable with feeding troughs

as well as two more stables behind a

corner shop.

In the 16th and 17th Centuries,

Hadleigh’s close proximity to the

coast made it an ideal place for

smugglers and many of the local

Innkeepers dealt in contraband goods

such as wine and tobacco.

Residents in the Benfleet and Hadleigh areas will soon be able to share their memories in an online archive.

Following the success of the Canvey

Community Archive that launched in 2007,

Essex County Council Libraries and the

Essex Record office are now supporting a

further six websites dedicated to preserving

people’s memories of life in Essex.

Two of these new sites will cover our area.

Firstly, there will be the Benfleet

Community Archive which is based at

Benfleet Library and secondly the

Hadleigh and Thundersley Community

Archive which is based at Hadleigh

Library. Local residents are invited to

pop along at any time to chat with a

member of staff and share their

memories and photographs.

Spearheading the launch of what is

known as SEECA - South East Essex

Community Archives is Sue Hampson.

She told us “The Canvey Community

Archive has been such a hit with local

residents that SEECA was

launched in April 2009 and

lottery funding applied for

to bring this fantastic

opportunity to other areas

of South Essex. It is

wonderful to get people

together talking about their

memories of the local area

and we are now able to

record and preserve these

stories for future

generations.”

The Canvey Community

Archive can be found at

www.canveyisland.org

and will give you an idea

of the sort of things that will be included on

the Benfleet and Hadleigh & Thundersley

sites. Researchers are looking for any old

photographs, postcards and paintings etc but

are particularly interested in hearing your

own personal memories of what life was like

in the area.

Photographs and memories are currently

being collected to include on the site ready

for launch. If you have anything you would

like to share, you can simply call in to either

Benfleet or Hadleigh Library and speak to

any member of staff.

Golden Parachute?

In life it is always good to have prepared yourself a parachute (or a plan ‘B’) for when/if things go badly wrong. The only time I don’t have one is, would you believe it, when I fly in a plane!

If you have a computer, consider this:

You could switch it on one day and it just

won’t power up into your Windows

System! It could be damaged by a Virus;

attacked by Spyware or your Disk could

be corrupted for some reason.

Believe me – it happens!

Your computer MAY (if you’re lucky) have

an Option in its’ Program Files to create a

set of 2 or 3 writable “RECOVERY” DVD’s

(DVD-R) which you can label and store

somewhere safe …. NOT in your Laptop

Bag!

This could one day be your Golden

Parachute allowing you, if all else fails, to

return your Laptop back to how it was when

you opened the box for the first time.

Note: You WILL then have to reinstall any

Program Disks you installed along the way,

your Anti-Virus and probably set up your e

mail System again! Finally restoring your

Data/Photos etc which you will have Backed

Up separately each week won’t you????

If you need Help/Advice on protecting your

computer from disasters such as this, why

not come along to your nearest 50+

Computer Club?

If you do get into trouble you can always

phone PC Senior and get him to advise or

sort you out with a Home Visit. Give him

a call on 07950869922 or visit

February 1964 - Beatlemania

On February 7th 1964 the Beatles arrived in

New York at the start of their first tour of the

United States. More than 300 screaming

teenagers greeted them as they stepped on to

the tarmac at Kennedy Airport. Many teens

had skipped school or work. Some were in

tears and many carried placards which read “I

love you, please stay.”

The Beatles’ first scheduled appearance was

on American television on the Ed Sullivan

show. More than 5,000 fans applied for

tickets to be part of the audience but only 750

were lucky enough to get them. Security

barriers had to be erected and the Fab Four

received the kind of police protection usually

reserved for kings and presidents! It is said

that the crime rate dipped to a 50 year low as

more than 40% of America tuned in to watch.

They performed the songs All My Loving, Till

There Was You, She Loves You, I Saw Her

Standing There and I Want To Hold Your

Hand. Four decades later, also in February,

the Beatles were given the President's Award

at the Grammys to mark the 40th anniversary

of what became known as "Beatlemania". It

was accepted by the widows of John Lennon

and George Harrison, Yoko Ono and Olivia

Harrison.

15th February 1952 - King George VI was laid to rest

George VI passed away in his sleep

on 6th February at the age of 56. He

had been King of the United

Kingdom and British Dominians

since 11th December 1936.

As the second son of George V, it

was never expected that he would

inherit the throne but he became

King after his older brother, Edward

VII abdicated in order to marry twice

divorced American socialite, Wallis

Simpson.

On the day of his funeral, crowds began to

gather in London in the early hours of this

morning for the solemn procession through

the capital's streets. For the first time ever,

thousands more people were able to witness

the event on television. The cortege - of

foreign royalty, heads of state and the armed

forces - began its dignified progress through

London at 9.30am as the first of Big Ben’s 56

chimes began. The coffin was draped in the

red, blue and gold of the Royal Standard.

The Imperial State Crown, the Gold Orb, the

Sceptre, the insignia of the Order of the

Garter and a white wreath from the Queen

Mother were placed on top.

Asthma in children is a parent's nightmare. When 7 month old Ava came to see me, she was had been on several courses of antibiotics and daily asthma inhalers.

I treated Ava with Bowen Technique which

consists of a sequence of gentle moves,

rolling over muscles and soft tissue on her

back, face, neck and chest. After 3 weekly

Bowen sessions her mum Lauren says “it is

like having a different baby!....she has not

had coughs or colds since and her breathing

is brilliant, I have not used the inhaler once.”

Asthma attacks can be triggered by one or

more of these factors: a cold or illness, dairy

products which can produce extra mucus,

dust mites, animals such as rabbits, cats,

dogs and horses and a sharp change of

temperature, cigarette smoke, anxiety and

allergies. I have found that children with

breathing problems are often not very

tolerant to milk but may really crave it.

There are now several alternatives to cow’s

milk and a nutritionist or your health visitor

can help you with this.

How does Bowen Technique work with asthma?

The diaphragm is key to an asthma attack.

This contracts normally when breathing in

and then relaxes to allow expiration. With an

asthma-like condition, the diaphragm may be

constantly partly in contraction, hence the

familiar wheeze of an asthmatic. If a trigger,

such as a cold or an allergy is detected, the

diaphragm seems to contract more and more,

allowing the asthmatic to breathe in but

increasingly not to breathe out. The Bowen

respiratory procedure persuades the muscles,

especially the diaphragm, to relax more and

more. This typically brings about a reduction

in asthma attacks and their severity,

especially amongst young children.

What about medication?

Asthma treatment for children is usually in

the form of inhalers, sometimes courses of

oral steroids and antibiotics for chest

infections. As a parent you are probably

eager to get your child off steroids as soon as

possible. Most children who have Bowen

treatment respond very quickly so,

sometimes medicines have been reduced

quite soon after treatment has started.

Medication has been prescribed to protect

your child from the danger of a major attack

and so I always recommend that reducing

medicines is done under the guidance of

your doctor and asthma nurse. Lots of

asthma sufferers are able to reduce

medicines quite soon after Bowen treatment.

If you're looking for a natural treatment for

your child with asthma, Bowen is a safe

alternative that works alongside

conventional medicine and may even help

your child come off their steroids and

inhalers. Bowen treats many other

conditions too. For more information have a

This month, Michael Clark (Registered Osteopath, Nutrition & Holistic

Lifestyle Coach) discusses the importance of rest and relaxation

Fatigue affects millions of people and is now

the number one reason to visit a GP. The

more time spent stressed and overworked and

lessening time spent relaxing is a major cause.

Fatigue however is just one of many

symptoms which can appear as a result from

lack of rest/relaxation. Others include:

• An accumulation of fat around the belly

button

• Low energy & Mood swings

• Difficult concentrating and poor memory

• Pains in the neck, shoulders and low back

• Weakened immune system causing frequent

colds and minor illnesses

• Difficulty recovering from injures

And many more

The 3 types of rest

For many, short term pick me ups are the only

way to get through the day. This is less than

ideal and causes major fluctuations in blood

sugar, insulin and cortisol levels which

disrupts normal hormonal physiology. There

are three types of rest. Active rest, Passive

rest, and Total rest. In order to

have a healthy body and mind

we need on a daily basis a

good proportion of each. Our

brain and body requires a huge

amount of energy to stay alert.

Not resting is akin to having

all the electrical appliances in

your house on full 24-7. The

result is a deficit in the amount

of energy used by the body/

mind.

Active rest

Active rest is a reduction in

workload and hopefully something you enjoy.

It’s just as important for someone who is very

inactive such as those in sedentary jobs to

perform active rest as it is someone who

‘never stops’. If someone is struggling with

work, reducing intensity or setting fewer goals

can be a

valuable way

to avoid time

off work and

return to full

duties quicker

and more

efficiently.

Sports people

would train at

60% capacity

or change to

lower

intensity

alternatives

e.g. a boxer

doing light

bag work instead of sparring, a runner

reducing to a jog etc. There are many ways to

relax whilst being active e.g. keen gardeners

may spread one days work over a two day

period, or people can try enjoyable new

activities within a range that makes them feel

to achieve optimum

work productivity,

achieve peak physical

performance,

improve our immune

system, have

consistent stable

energy and to think

clearly and

creatively, it is vital

to schedule into

every day, high

quality, active,

passive and total rest

good and relaxed such as, going for a walk at

lunch, cycling, swimming etc.

Passive rest

This involves taking the intensity down even

further involving quiet time and stillness

which takes your mind completely away from

work or anything stressful. Watching TV for

hours is NOT ideal. A 10 minute, time out

break, outside in the fresh air and relaxing

your breathing is amazingly beneficial.

Passive rest includes, lying undisturbed in a

bath, reading, meditating, listening to music,

painting, having a massage, sitting in the

garden etc. Passive rest will reduce stress,

promote physical health, and increase

creativity and problem solving.

Total rest

This is something I covered in more detail in a

previous article. In short, total rest is high

quality sleep. For

hormonal reasons our

body is optimally

designed to be asleep

by 10pm and to have

8 hours of quality

sleep. Our body does

most of its physical

repair between 10pm

and 2am if asleep.

Between 2am to 6am

is when the majority

of psychological and

memory processing

occurs, if asleep.

Missing any part of

the sleep cycle has

been medically shown

to have major affects on short and long term

physical and mental health. Achieving high

quality sleep is vital for good health.

This is by no means a complete list and is not

intended to treat any specific person. In order
