T hanks for celebrating our 210th Anniversary with us on February 7th!! We are honored to be celebrating this milestone and glad to continue the tradition of supporting our local community and helping to promote such a great place to work, live and play! This month I will host a Regional Chamber Directors meeting and I

look forward to promoting our community with the numerous Chamber Directors from all over Northwestern PA that visit us.

March is very busy for the Chamber, our community and this year personally for me. The Leadership Meadville class is busy finalizing the 8th Annual Chili, Chowder, and Soup Cookoff for the 23rd at its new location of the ICC. Be sure to get your ticket to the “hottest event” in town. This event brings several local restaurants together with their favorite recipes to be judged. There is a little friendly competition among the parties involved. Several bakeries donate desserts, live music is provided by Necessary Experience and a fun evening is had by all! Part of the proceeds of this event fund the Leadership Meadville program and also help out with scholarships for future classes.

Another fun community event this month is the St. Patrick’s Day Parade, which will be on Saturday, March 18th. That same morning is Judith’s Jig! What a fun day to support your community while having so much fun! I enjoy supporting the many Grand Leprechaun candidates, as it is quite the friendly competition among various businesses & organizations to raise funds for local charitable organizations. Eileen Mullen has done a tremendous job carrying on her father’s legacy of this family and community tradition, which gives so much back to various organizations thru the candidates fundraising efforts. Be sure to vote for your favorite Grand Leprechaun contestant!

We are currently planning the Annual Banquet & Dinner featuring the Diamond Awards for Wednesday, April 26th at the Pampered Palate Catering & Conference Center in Saegertown. There are many sponsorship opportunities available and you will want to make your reservation early, as it fills up annually with a waiting list! Be sure to nominate a deserving business or organization for the business of the year, a non- profit agency for any outstanding accomplishments and achievements in our community or someone for the emerging leader award. There is also the opportunity to nominate someone you feel is deserving of the Raymond P. Shafer Award, which recognizes someone for their community support and volunteerism.

Our other Chamber committees are meeting to plan fun summer events for you. We are planning the Women’s Golf Outing and Caddy Auction for June 13th & 14th. With holding this event on Flag Day, we will be having a friendly patriotic competition for team outfits, caddy outfit and cart display! Thunder in the City is August 4th & 5th, and our Fall Golf outing is Wednesday, August 30th.

As I stated earlier, this is a busy time professionally and personally. Our oldest daughter got married last month, and as you read this I will be enjoying a cocktail in Cancun with several Chamber friends on our third Chamber trip! This is a much-needed tropical vacation with friends, as we didn’t have a honeymoon. When we return, we sign on our new house and will be moving in soon! There is a lot going on, but all positive things!

As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to stop in the office, call or email me at any time. I look forward to seeing you at any of our many upcoming events.

Sincerely,

Christa

PRECISION MANUFACTURING INSTITUTE PMI Transitions to Credit Hour School PMI is excited to announce its transition to a quarter-term schedule and credit-based system for students starting in January of 2017. This change, approved by the Pennsylvania Department of Education, the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges, and the U.S. Department of Education, will simplify and stream-line student schedules and the process for administering Federal Student Aid and other financial aid for students. The CNC Machinist and Electro-Mechanical Technology programs will be comprised of four quarter terms, and the Electric Arc Welding program will be comprised of two quarter terms. Student progress will be measured in credits earned, rather than clock hours, to more closely align to the typical collegiate-based standard.

HAGAN BUSINESS MACHINES OF MEADVILLE, INC. Hagan Business Machine Celebrates 25 Years of Local Ownership Company brings local service with national clout to area Hagan Business Machines, headquartered in Meadville, was locally purchased in 1992 by Craig Guy and Jay Verno. The main office is located at 77 Mead Avenue in Meadville, PA. The new Technology Center is located at 17281 Conneaut Lake Road in Meadville.

Jay Verno, Hagan's President, says, "We have always put a strong emphasis on continued training, and we work really hard to anticipate the needs of our customers as well as trends in technology."

A lot of that training is on technology security, particularly ransomware and hacking prevention. According to Matt Larson, Hagan's Virtual Chief Information Officer, ransom-ware is on the rise locally and is a method of hacking into files, encrypting them and then demanding a fee in order to unlock them.

Verno says, "Our care to ensure our customers' data is protected has helped us grow the Managed Network Solutions side of our business by 52% in 2016."

Hagan's customer service delivery helped them to win the "Reader's Choice Award" for Computer Sales and Service by the Meadville Tribune last year.

Leadership Meadville 7 Health Care Day By Lee Scandinaro, Meadville Area Recreation Complex/Meadville Neighborhood Center/Crawford County System of Care and LM7 Class Member

While our country battles out the fate of health care nationwide, Leadership Meadville 7 spent their Friday looking locally at health care in Crawford County. Below, I’ve detailed some highlights and given a few thoughts about our work as leaders, moving forward.

The day began with an energetic discussion about two Laws of Leadership: The Law of Intuition and Momentum. What followed was an activity where each student identified what they believe to be their most significant motivating factors as employees. After each response was recorded, we identified “personal growth” to be among the top 3 motivational factors for all students in Leadership Meadville. This find surprised many of us after learning about the diverse needs of different generations of employees.

After a short bus ride through town, the day transitioned to a tremendously charismatic presentation by the always charming Jerry Alonge of Vantage. Alonge detailed his three rules for a successful leader: communication, motivation, and knowledge. He also clued us in to what he believes to be the “demise of all leaders”: entitlement. Alonge believes strongly that once you feel you deserve your own parking space, you’re marking your own demise. Being this was my first time in the former Talon facility on South Main Street, Alonge and his wonderful staff, including the fabulous speech and tour by Jaclyn Bojewski-Hornyak, made it a truly memorable experience.

Before a lovely lunch sponsored by Vantage, we were visited by Phillip Pandolph of Meadville Medical Center. Pandolph de-tailed the amazing work of our local, independent, health care system and its value to our community and region. One interesting fact from Pandolph’s presentation was our county’s mysteriously high rate of cancer. Apparently no one knows the cause! What I appre-ciated most about Alonge, Pandolph, and Bojewski-Hornyak as leaders was their humbleness and genuine belief that their work is dispensable in comparison to the incredible efforts of their staff.

After Vantage, LM7 traveled to Webury’s Clubhouse for a presentation from Melissa Porter and a wellness activity facilitated by Greg Brink. Both brought a useful perspective to healthcare and leadership as they walked us through the evolution of Wesbury from a farm for seniors to a multi-service/purpose retirement community.

Our day concluded with an inspirational charge by Mark Kilburn of the DJB Group. Kilburn focused upon health insurance, nationally, and how we, as health insurance consumers, can get the most out of our policies. Kilburn’s rapier wit and enthusiasm kept us engaged even through the final hours of the class as snow began piling on our cars outside.

This day was a truly insightful look into the world of an industry so many discuss yet know so little about. It was helpful to be able to take an inside look into health care and I would encourage any folks wanting to learn more to reach out to any of our speakers.

LM7 visited Vantage Healthcare and took time for a class photo in their lobby.

Jerry Alonge, CEO of Vantage, has become a favorite speaker of the current and past LM classes.

LM Talk

The Leadership Meadville committee puts on a monthly radio show called “LM Talk” to showcase the program and reconnect with alumni. LM Talk is hosted by Jeff Miller of Class Act Cleaning and Amanda Keller of PMI, both graduates of Leadership Meadville 5. In February however, Dave Astry of Bush Investment Group and graduate of Leadership Meadville 4, was nice enough to fill in for Jeff. The show airs on COOL 101.7 FM on the second Wednesday of each month from 9:00 – 9:30 AM.

LM Talk is based on discussions with Leadership Meadville alumni concerning personal and professional experiences preceding and following the completion of the Leadership Meadville program. Other topics that may be discussed on the program include: personal strengths and weaknesses, personal evolution, and applying your knowledge learned in the program, all based around leadership.

Our guest on February’s show was Mitch Hohmann, Landscape Designer at Blooming Valley Landscape and Supply, and graduate of Leadership Meadville 6. On the show Mitch talked about how the Leadership Meadville program helped him “break out of his bubble” and gain confidence with public speaking. He said that there were many things he enjoyed about the class especially that he was able to get at least one solid take away from each class.

The next LM Talk airs Wednesday, March 8th at 9 AM on COOL 101.7 FM. Our guest will be Jan VanTuil from VanTuil Photo. Be sure to tune in!
