of full-time study free of charge, and you can

do an apprenticeship at any age (if you are

19+ your employer will have to contribute to

GCSE grades GCSE GRADES UPDATE

In 2017 the grading system for GCSE English and maths changed

significantly. Rather than being graded A* to G, a numerical system

is now used. The grades now run from 1 to 9, with 9 being the

highest. A grade 4 is now a ‘standard pass’, equivalent to a grade

C, with a grade 5 being a ‘strong pass’.

The table opposite explains these changes.

GCSE English and mathsAccording to the Department for Education, gaining a grade 4 or

higher in English and maths could potentially add £2,000 to your

salary every year. If you have not yet gained a grade 4 in GCSE

English and maths then you will carry on studying these subjects as

part of your Study Programme at college. Our English and maths

teams are committed to helping you succeed, and we offer

a different and more personalised experience than school.

Our GCSE courses run from September until June, giving you the

chance to gain your qualification in just one academic year.

Not quite ready for GCSE yet? Don’t worry, we have a range

of ‘stepping stone’ qualifications in English and maths meaning

that you can improve your skills at your own pace.

When you join us, we will assess your current levels of

English and maths, and use your existing qualifications to

make sure that you are on the right course for you.

Bicton College

Bicton College is based in East Devon, near Exeter, and set in an Area of

Outstanding Natural Beauty, just two miles from the Jurassic Coast. The

historic Georgian mansion, commercial farm, animal husbandry school, modern

veterinary nursing building, world-class engineering and heavy plant machinery workshop, walled

garden and arboretum are all set in over 200 hectares

of historic parkland.

has a dedicated animal management centre, which houses specialist reptiles,

small mammals and dog grooming facilities, and offers specialist courses in agriculture, animal management, countryside, floristry, horticulture

and veterinary nursing.

TransportThe College has its own transport network that will collect you from a range of towns

and villages from Penzance to Truro, Falmouth to St Ives. The campus has ample

During this one-year course you will learn more about animal health and welfare, farm livestock, animal behaviour and handling, animal housing and feeding, animal biology, breeds, grooming and wildlife. You will also undertake a work experience placement. Theoretical lessons are backed up with practical hands-on sessions within our extensive animal units.

Progression: Continue your studies with our Animal Management Diploma Level 3, or go into employment.

ANIMAL CARE CERTIFICATE LEVEL 2

YOUR ROUTE TO A CAREER IN ANIMAL MANAGEMENT…We offer three options for you to start your studies in the animal management industry depending on your GCSE results. Our Level 3 course offers you the choice of university study or employment on successful completion of your course. Our Level 2 and Level 1 courses are ideal if you would like more time to develop your skills before progressing on to further study.

ANIMAL MANAGEMENT DIPLOMA LEVEL 3

Equivalent to A-levels

Entry requirements: Five GCSEs at grade 4 including English, maths and science.Where: Bicton College, Duchy College Rosewarne and Duchy College Stoke Climsland

Our state-of-the-art animal management centres at Bicton College and Duchy College provide dedicated access to a huge range of animal species: meerkats, coatis and lemurs at Bicton’s animal husbandry school; exotics, birds and farm animals at Duchy Rosewarne; small mammals, exotics, farm livestock and horses at Duchy Stoke Climsland and zoo animal experience at Dartmoor Zoological Park. We have very strong links with a wide variety of employers in the animal industry.

During this course you will study a range of areas which may include animal health, feeding and nutrition, animal behaviour and communication, biology, wildlife conservation, welfare and breeding. There are one- and two-year options available with this pathway and we will work with you to decide which is best for you. All our staff are highly qualified and have worked in industry.

Entry requirements: GCSE English and maths at grade 2, or equivalent qualifications at Entry Level 3. Where: Bicton College, Duchy College Rosewarne and Duchy College Stoke Climsland

Learn the basic skills to start your career working with animals, there will be the possibility of progression to Level 2 on completion of this course. You will study how to care for small mammals, birds and farm animals, handle and feed animals, clean their accommodation and carry out basic health care. This course includes plenty of practical hands-on sessions to build those all-important practical skills, you will also undertake a work experience placement.

Your apprenticeship will vary depending on your employer but while with your employer you could learn about health checking, basic animal training, transporting animals, feeding, watering and exercising animals, advising customers and owners and maintaining a clean and safe working environment.

You will spend one day every two weeks on campus for 12 to 18 months and the remaining days in the workplace with your employer training while you work. While on campus you will benefit from our extensive animal management collections which, depending on where you study, includes lemurs, meerkats, goats, ferrets, exotic animals, farm animals and aquatics.

During this course you will learn to develop and demonstrate competence in a range of areas which may include promoting and maintaining health and wellbeing, animal handling and grooming, and delivering basic treatment.

Progression: on to our Animal Management Advanced Apprenticeship Level 3, or go into employment.

This apprenticeship will help you develop your supervisory skills in the workplace and will further enhance your animal management abilities in animal health, controlling and restraining animals, animal feeding and nutrition, breeding, monitoring and evaluating animal accommodation.

Kit studied animal management at Duchy College Rosewarne where he carried out a work placement at Paradise Park and was offered a full-time job on completion of his studies. Kit then applied for an apprentice technician role at Rosewarne and on successful completion was offered a job and now works as a course manager and instructor and is a wildlife and bird expert.

Our Level 2 and Level 1 courses are ideal if you would like more time to develop your skills before progressing on to further study. Non-riding options are available at all levels.


Entry requirements: Four GCSEs at grade 4 including English and maths or another relevant qualification, plus good riding and interpersonal skills.Where: Bicton College and Duchy College Stoke Climsland

A work-based one-year route at Bicton College includes both theoretical and practical training in all areas of riding, training horses, managing yards and caring for horses. During the course you will plan and monitor horse feeding, nutrition and preparing horses for work and competition. Assessment is continuous throughout the course. If you wish to progress to higher education, the completion of a further year on an Access to Higher Education Diploma is required.

At Duchy College Stoke Climsland this two-year course focuses on academic progression and the opportunity to move on to university study from foundation degrees to a Master’s qualification. You will study all aspects of equine management, including feeding and nutrition, biology, health, behaviour and welfare of horses and business management with options around both riding and non-riding routes. Assessment includes external examinations and successful completion provides a qualification equivalent to A-levels.

Both Bicton College and Duchy College Stoke Climsland campuses are located in beautiful countryside and provide dedicated equestrian facilities, which include indoor and outdoor schools, horse walkers, and working yards stabling a range of horses, where you will spend time honing your practical skills.

Entry requirements: GCSE English and maths at grade 2 or equivalent qualifications at Entry Level 3. Where: Bicton College and Duchy College Stoke Climsland

This one-year course will teach you the basic skills to start your career in equine management, there will be the possibility of progression to Level 2 on completion of the course. Skills include mucking out, grooming, cleaning horse tack, feeding horses, riding and handling horses under direction and much more. Assessment is continuous throughout the course.

HORSE MANAGEMENT ADVANCED APPRENTICESHIP LEVEL 3

Over the course of 15 to 18 months, you will be working in paid employment within the equine industry and will spend one dayevery two weeks during term time at college, where you will study a wide range of subjects around the care of all different types of horses. Subjects covered will include safe working practices, yard and field routines and horse anatomy, physiology and welfare, horse handling, care and appearance, saddlery and equipment, transportation, and non-ridden exercise as well as core behaviours such as teamwork and communication.

We have some great links with the equine world and fantastic facilities at the equestrian centres at each of our college sites, giving you amazing opportunities to explore the range of careers available and further develop your equine-related skills throughout your apprenticeship training. If you ride or do not ride don’t worry - there are specialised routes that you can take which include riding, non-riding, racing, breeding or driving.

Both Bicton College and Duchy College Stoke Climsland campuses are located in beautiful countryside and provide dedicated equestrian facilities, which include indoor and outdoor schools and working yards. Here you will have the opportunity to practice your skills in preparation for the end point assessments.

Alison has trained, and still trains, many horses and competed successfully in advanced dressage. Alison has also trained riders who have competed internationally including a South African Olympic rider.

Our veterinary nursing teaching areas are designed to simulate a veterinary practice. We have a radiography room, laboratory, kennel area and operating theatre. We have many pieces of equipment that you would expect to find in a veterinary practice such as microscopes, anaesthetic machines, operating tables and a large variety of surgical instruments. We also have a range of mannequins, from life-size Labradors to not so life-size ponies, and with working farms and equestrian centres you will also have access to animals seen in large animal practices.

You will have access to all the animals in our animal management centres including mammals, fish, birds and exotics.

During this two-and-a-half-year course you will learn the operational requirements of a veterinary practice, veterinary nursing duties, anatomy, physiology and genetics, animal health, wellbeing and husbandry, supporting the supply of veterinary medicines, supporting veterinary anaesthesia and preoperative and post-operative nursing care.

You will spend one day a week on campus and the remaining four days in the workplace with your employer. There will also be occasional block weeks throughout the course.

As a veterinary nurse you will provide skilled support and expert nursing care to sick and injured animals who are receiving treatment in a veterinary practice. You will help to educate owners in maintaining the health of their pets and carry out a range of medical and surgical treatments under the direction of a veterinary surgeon. Hannah studied animal management at Cornwall College Newquay and on completion of her studies she then started working at Porfell Wildlife Park & Sanctuary, where she was the section head of primates for a year. Home FarmsWe are very proud of our Home Farms at Bicton College and Duchy College Stoke Climsland, which both incorporate dairy herds, the milk from which is sold to Saputo UK (formerly Dairy Crest) and is used to make Cathedral City cheddar. Bicton Home Farm totals 147 hectares used for grass and crop production, as well as a central area of parkland, on which we support a flock of 120 Mule ewes. We have many upgrades and improvements planned. Duchy College Home Farm totals 240 hectares of farmed land, including grassland, forage maize, winter wheat and spring barley, a flock of 100 February lambing Highlander cross Texels, a flock of 100 pure Highlanders, as well as three breeding sows and their piglets. We are currently developing a new 200 cow dairy unit.

Sarah Cann has studied the Level 2, 3 and 4 Agriculture Apprenticeships and now works full-time on her family’s robotic dairy farm, which has 70 cows.

“The courses gave me the knowledge I need to look after and manage the cows, as well as giving me more confidence in my abilities and helping me with my decision making. Alongside this role I carry out relief milking on two other farms, do some herd health and help manage cows on another farm. I have a real passion for cows, their health and cow signals and I love looking after them and the management side of things that comes with that.”

The type of work you will carry out during your apprenticeship will depend on your employer. As most farm businesses are small then you will find yourself playing a vital role as part of the farm staff. Areas covered could include: health, biosecurity and welfare, vehicle operation, nutrition, handling and moving, breeding and replacement, cost, cost production and margins, awareness of Key Performance Indicators, animal housing and accommodation, effective maintenance of equipment, how technology can assist business efficiency and supply chains.

You will spend most of the week with your employer, attending college for a minimum of 18 days per year. At college you will cover 50% theory and 50% practical work, which will include learning more about tractor and machinery use, nutrition, health and welfare, health and safety, environment and conservation, and welding.

You will be expected to undertake and pass a range of courses as part of this apprenticeship to include emergency first aid at work and the safe use of pesticides as well as choosing to do one of the following: Boom sprayer, mounted, trailed or self-propelled equipment, Granular applicator equipment, Handheld applicator equipment.

You will gain your Level 2 Stockperson Apprenticeship Standard.

Other short legislative courses are heavily subsidised such as Tele-handler, ATV, Mule and Tractor Driving.

Progression: To improve your promotion prospects continue your apprenticeship with our Agriculture Advanced Apprenticeship Level 3, or go straight into employment.

GAMEKEEPING I WANT A CAREER IN…




Creating and maintaining good, healthy habitats which are beneficial to all wildlife is at the heart of a gamekeeper’s job. Gamekeeping has changed significantly over the years and while you will still be responsible for the husbandry of both reared and wild game for shooting, your time will also be spent helping to shape the countryside and protecting its species.

Conor is currently studying the Land & Wildlife Management Diploma Level 3 and had heard great things about the course, so decided to enrol with a view to becoming a gamekeeper in the future.

If you love working outdoors, care about the countryside and the environment and would like to make significant contributions to the biodiversity and conservation of rare species, then why not join the 5,000 full-time gamekeepers currently employed in the UK.

British gamekeepers currently manage approximately 7.3 million hectares of the land in the UK and work closely with farm managers and foresters to help conserve both game and wildlife, using economically viable estate management policies.

During this course you will have access to Duchy College’s 283-hectare estate and woodlands where you will care for the College’s pheasants and learn about the management of game bird, deer, farm habitat, woodlands and fisheries. You will also study land-based machinery, working dogs, pest and predator control and will organise a number of shoot days from start to finish which will include costings, promotion, event preparation and running the activities on the day.

The extensive Bicton College estate is the perfect setting to hone your forestry and arboriculture skills. Home to over 200 hectares of extensive parklands, an arboretum housing specimen trees, machinery workshops and opportunities to develop your tree climbing techniques, Bicton College will give you all the in-depth knowledge you need to start your career as an arboriculturist.

This course is very active and you will be based outdoors most of the time studying a number of topics including tree climbing, pruning and dismantling, tree identification, planting and care, woodland management, plant and soil science, tree felling and chainsaw use, tree surveys, pests and diseases.

You will also have access to local woodlands for real work environments and gain a real insight into how the industry works by taking part in visits and trips to industry-related venues and employers. You will have access to the latest technology and will be taught by qualified staff with industry backgrounds and experience of running their own businesses.

You will develop the essential knowledge and skills of chainsaw maintenance and the safe use of a range of equipment required in tree felling and tree work. As an arborist you will also develop your plant identification skills, being able to plant and maintain trees as well as honing your climbing and aerial rescue abilities. You will need a head for heights as well as a keen interest in safe working practices. As part of your study programme you will also need to complete a work placement to develop your practical and employability skills in the real world of work.

If you love the outdoors and are passionate about conservation and the environment then a career in arboriculture could be just what you are looking for. You will need a good head for heights, stamina, a practical outlook and great initiative, you will also need to be prepared to work in all weathers! From identifying species affected by disease, to chopping branches from the highest canopies there is a wide range of specialist areas of arboriculture for you to explore.

Entry requirements: GCSEs in English and maths at grade 3. You will also need an employer willing to take you on as an apprentice. Where: Bicton College

It takes great skill and specialist training to identify problems with trees and plants, to know how and when to fell or prune a tree, to turn branches into woodchip or to replant trees. Our Level 2 apprenticeship will form the foundation for you to join the arboriculture industry and the wide range of occupations available in this area.

While learning the practical side of arboriculture with your employer, you will also be required to attend college on a block release programme, where you will learn how to plant and help trees and shrubs to establish, how to identify trees and shrubs, the correct techniques for chainsaw work and tree climbing, health and safety, risk assessments and pollution control.

The area of arboriculture you specialise in will depend on the work your employer carries out. This could be work in a garden centre, landscape design, forestry, woodland management or timber industries.

While studying at Bicton College you can take advantage of the College’s estate, which houses an arboretum with veteran and specimen trees, machinery workshops, over 200 acres of extensive parklands and lots of opportunities for you to develop your tree climbing techniques.

During the course you will also have the opportunity to obtain the following additional Level 2 qualifications: Traffic Management (NRSWA Unit 002 Signing, Lighting and Guarding) OR Sector Scheme 12D, Safe Use of Brushwood Chipper, Chainsaw Maintenance, Crosscutting Timber Using a Chainsaw, Felling & Processing Timber up to 380mm, Safe Use of Mobile Elevated Work Platform, and Accessing a Tree Using Rope & Harness.

Progression: Continue your studies with our Arboriculture Advanced Apprenticeship Level 3 or our Forestry & Arboriculture Diploma Level 3, or go into employment.

ARBORICULTURE APPRENTICESHIP LEVEL 2

Build on the knowledge you gained during your Level 2 course and develop your practical skills at an advanced level, helping to increase your employment prospects at a supervisory level.

During the course you will also have the opportunity to gain the following additional Level 3 qualifications: Aerial Tree Rescue Operations, Use of a Chainsaw from a Mobile Elevated Work Platform (MEWP), Emergency First Aid, and Aerial Cutting Using Free Fall Techniques.

Study floristry in the beautiful settings of our Bicton College or Duchy College Rosewarne campuses and take inspiration from being surrounded by acres of countryside and the diverse range of flora. This introduction to floristry course is ideal if you would like to work in a florist shop, hotel or as a supplier and is designed to help you build a wide range of practical floristry skills and knowledge, while exploring your creativity, ready for you to transfer these skills into employment and enterprise.

During the course you will need to undertake a minimum of 40 hours of industry experience and you will learn a range of floristry designs which will include weddings, tied, funeral and floral designs. The course also includes function and event decoration, planning and displays. You will also learn flower and foliage care. You will be trained by industry specialists who run their own businesses or work within the industry, who will deliver, instruct and provide you with up-to-date industry techniques within floristry.

We also offer a fast track route to floristry which condenses the Certificate and Diploma into one-year.

This department focuses on building your confidence in learning, employability and independent living with all programmes tailored to each individual learner, with effective teaching that involves providing each student with different avenues to learning, often in the same classroom. Following on from the Pathway 2 Employment Stage 1 course, if you have a genuine desire to get a job and you can demonstrate an excellent record of behaviour and attendance, plus you have Entry Level 2 English and maths, then this course is ideal for you. You will also need to have a current Education, Health and Care Plan and be 16 to 24 years of age. This course is designed to help you move forwards and develop your confidence both at work and at college. You should expect to carry out a two day per week work placement with an employer, supported by a skills job coach. This course is ideal if you enjoy practical work and would like to experience a range of vocational options while being supported with your learning. PREPARING TO TRANSITION FROM COLLEGE: MOVING ON LEVEL 1

An innovative course run by Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service, has celebrated students’ achievements with a practical demonstration and award ceremony.

Following a five day programme by Cornwall Fire and Rescue’s Phoenix Team; students from Foundation Learning showcased their new skills in front of dignitaries, family and friends. They used lots of key skills to achieve this including working as a team, communication skills, trust and first aid skills.

Assistant Chief Fire Officer for Cornwall Fire and Rescue, Mark Hewitt said the Phoenix team is here to help the local

community understand the “important role that fire and rescue plays in society. We also want to teach young people to develop new skills, improve confidence and be able to work in teams.”

Student Graham Andrews said he liked wearing the breathing apparatus. “I didn’t realise just how heavy it was, but it was great to use,” he explained. “The staff were all amazing, really professional and friendly, thank you for all your help.”

CORNWALL FIRE AND RESCUE CELEBRATE STUDENT ACHIEVEMENTS


If you are not quite ready to enter the world of work, but would like to develop your employability skills this course is ideal. You will learn core employability skills through activities that develop your communication and teamwork. You will also improve your English and maths. You should expect to carry out one day supported community action, or one day supported college work placement per week. Preparing you for a career in the armed forces is our ultimate goal. We pride ourselves on our success rates with 80% of students who pass going straight into the military or protective services and the remaining 20% continuing their studies.

This two-year course will challenge you, take you out of your comfort zone and put you one step ahead of the rest. More importantly it will offer you the opportunity to find out more about the benefits of a military and protective services career before you commit. The course is delivered by staff who all had careers within the military and protective services prior to joining the College, including extensive operational experience and specialist skills qualifications to inform and develop your understanding.

You will study a range of core modules including preparing for a career in a chosen uniformed service, developing aspects of physical fitness for entry to the uniformed services, developing leadership skills and equality, diversity and inclusion. You will also study specialist subjects depending on which area of the uniformed services you would like to enter as well as outdoor and adventurous expeditions to further challenge you. Take part in numerous field trips to military and protective service establishments and carry out overnight residential military exercises. You will also have the opportunity to undertake first aid training. Expect to visit local armed forces on a monthly basis, such as HMS Raleigh.

This one-year course offers you an insight into, and understanding of, the entry requirements for the military and protective services. Gain a wide variety of skills and knowledge from a range of units related to protective and military service. Have you got what it takes to join the uniformed services? Our Military and Protective Services (MaPS) Academy provides the ultimate preparation for a career in the armed forces, emergency and rescue services, the fire, police, ambulance, UK border force as well as, non-uniformed roles, civil service, voluntary or private security sector.

Students were put to the test in a range of real-life military training scenarios as part of their final exercise, which tested their skills and drills. Students had to deal with training incidents including drunk and disorderly people, smuggling, surveillance, arrest operations, attacks, casualty evacuation and scenes of crime.

Student Lucy Evans said: “I thought it was very realistic which also made the week more enjoyable. I thought the scenarios were fantastic, it really made us think on our feet.”

Level 3 Sport student at Duchy College, Chantel Whiting, who was selected to represent the country after impressing the England coaches at a national competition earlier in the year, has boxed her way to a 3 – 2 win over Ireland. Rising star Chantel is aiming to qualify for the 2024 Olympics.

“I would love to get to the Olympics then go professional after that,” Chantel said. “I have been boxing for about four years and I have enjoyed it ever since. I am so honoured to represent England, I’m really proud of myself.”

LAND-BASED ENGINEERINGI WANT TO WORK IN...

We work with a wide range of local and regional employers providing apprenticeship training for land-based engineering. Whether that is farm machinery or grounds keeping on an estate or resort.

This two-year apprenticeship is ideal if you want to become a qualified engineer. This apprenticeship provides an ideal foundation for a wide range of occupations within the engineering field. You must have good practical skills, be able to follow technical drawings and work carefully and methodically.

You will attend college in a series of block weeks, developing a range of skills including fabrication and welding, maintenance engineering and machining. The apprenticeship route allows you to tailor your learning to suit your job and the skills required.

There are numerous machines available in this sector and your career could see you working on precision farming machinery, carrying out a variety of tasks: the construction and maintenance of mechatronics, remote sensors, robotic systems and farming automation; designing, installing and maintaining dairy equipment; maintaining and repairing grounds care machinery on golf courses or football grounds, off-road vehicles such as AVTs used by land owners and farmer on larger estates, forestry equipment such as chainsaws and timber production plants or food technology manufacturing plant operations and repairs.

Progression: To an engineering advanced apprenticeship, or further full-time study such as our Land-based Engineering Diploma.

LAND-BASED TECHNOLOGY APPRENTICESHIP LEVEL 2

Entry requirements: Level 2 apprenticeship and be employed in a relevant role. Where: Bicton College and Duchy College Stoke Climsland

This advanced-level apprenticeship can take up to two years to complete (either via day-release study or a block release training programme).

At Level 3 units of study are selected that build on the work completed at Level 2, but focus on your employer’s specific needs. These may include advanced welding skills, computer-based diagnostics or electrical systems maintenance.

There is also a Higher Apprenticeship available at Level 4 if you wish to continue earning while you learn to degree-level. Many employers maintain apprentices as full-time staff within their organisation, and increase salaries when apprenticeships are completed.

LAND-BASED TECHNOLOGY ADVANCED APPRENTICESHIP LEVEL 3

HOW TO BECOME A LAND-BASED ENGINEER....To follow the apprenticeship route and earn while you learn, you will need to find a company with an element of land-based engineering to employ you. Plant operations is the broad term referring to the operation and driving of heavy plant equipment such as, excavators, dumpers, rollers and telescopic handlers to name a few. Groundworks is the specific job role of preparing the ground using some of these machines within a construction, civil engineering, roads, railways or landscaping project.

Entry requirements: GCSEs in English and maths at grade 2 or above and the Level 1 qualification. CSCS HSE Test completed within the last year.Where: Bicton College and Duchy College Stoke Climsland

You will learn how to operate a variety of equipment including excavators, forklifts, dumpers and road rollers and you could gain a CITB CPCS ticket for one of the items you train on. You will then be assessed through a series of practical activities such as:

This specialist two-year apprenticeship offers you the chance to get your Construction Plant Competence Scheme (CPCS) card to enable you to operate plant machinery. It also trains you in the more specific skills with regards to work in groundworks. You’ll gain insight into the techniques of modular paving, masonry walling, earth moving, roadbuilding and pipe laying, and drainage.

Groundworks can be heavy, dirty work and will be outside in all weathers, you need to be physically fit, confident at working at heights and often in confined spaces.

AccommodationLiving on campus has many advantages, especially if it is your first

time away from home. You will have a great opportunity to meet

new friends and learn some important independent living skills. In

addition, our residential students do really well with their studies,

due to easy access to other students, staff and college resources

outside normal college hours.

On-site accommodation is available at Bicton College and

Duchy College Stoke Climsland. We work closely with Ofsted in the

care of under 18-year-old residential students and are committed

to promoting and safeguarding the welfare of our students.

Supporting youLearning Advice TeamWhile at college the Learning Advice Team will provide you with a consistent source of information, advice and support. They will oversee your experience and progress across the whole of your study programme acting as a vital independent link between your specialist programme tutors, English and maths tutors, employability and work experience co-ordinator and, where appropriate, your parents/guardians. The Learning Advice Team work closely with your personal tutor to ensure you enjoy a brilliant learning experience. The team will also support you with a variety of pastoral, health and welfare issues and help signpost you to other sources of support if required. Depending on your campus, the Learning Advice Team may consist of a senior learning adviser, a learning adviser and/or personal learning advisers.

Learner Enrichment Officer (LEO)If you have a question and are not sure who to ask, or just want to chat, speak to the LEO on your campus. They can help you with everything from getting involved with Cornwall College Students’ Union (CCSU) activities to information and advice on confidential issues such as sexual health including C-Card, drink and drugs, bullying and personal safety. They can also help you with enrichment and engagement by organising trips, activities and fun days for your group or campus, which is all great for your CV.

Supporting youAccommodationIf you do not live within reasonable travelling distance of the College you may wish to consider seeking accommodation nearby. For students at Bicton College and Duchy College Stoke Climsland there are full-board residential places available. Residential Bursaries are available for eligible students. Benefits relating to supportThere are provisions under the Jobseeker’s regulations, which allow you to study whilst seeking employment without losing your benefits. If you are claiming out of work benefits you should discuss your proposed attendance at college with your employment advisor, before enrolling on a course. It may be possible for you to return to study if you receive other benefits (e.g. Income Support, Housing Benefit etc.), but you must check with the relevant benefit office before enrolling on the course of your choice. Your benefits may be affected by returning to study, so check this out first.

MoodleMoodle is our virtual classroom which provides an online space to complement your course. It provides:• access to resources for your course• interactive and collaborative activities• assessment submission and

self-marking tests

As well as course materials, a range of support resources to develop skills and personal development are also available via Moodle. Moodle is available 24 hours a day, every day of the week.

Funding support This funding is to help you meet extra costs e.g. transport and childcare, is administered by the College and is means-tested.

Guaranteed Student BursaryIf you are under 19 and living in care, a care leaver, receiving Income Support in your own right, a disabled young person in receipt of both the Employment Support Student Allowance and Disability Living Allowance or Personal Independence Payment (PIP), you will be entitled to a Guaranteed Student Bursary of up to £1,200. You will need to apply through the FE Bursary Fund for this.

TransportIf you live more than three miles from college you may be eligible for support for your travel costs. If you are under 19 at the beginning of the academic year in September and are attending a full-time course at the local designated institution (usually the provider of your course nearest your home) you will qualify for subsidised travel.

Duchy College Stoke Climsland and Bicton College campuses provide a transport network running across the Cornwall and Devon border.

The Cornwall College Group provides financial support towards a bus pass for students aged 16 to 18 who qualify for the funding support. Students will be expected to use a college bus where possible. A contribution towards travel costs can also be made to students aged 19 or over at the start of their course. These awards are means-tested and applied for through the scheme. Transport is subject to change by local government.

Free college mealsIf you are aged 16 to 18 and received free school meals, or if your circumstances have recently changed and you are now in receipt of certain benefits, you may qualify for free college meals. Contact Student Services for further details.

Advanced Learning LoansIf you are thinking about continuing your education, are over 19 years of age and want to study a Level 3 qualification or above, there are government-based loans available, depending on your chosen course. There is also a means-tested, cash-limited bursary to help you meet transport costs and childcare costs.

Care to Learn (for learners aged up to 20 years)Care to Learn is a national scheme for childcare funding if you are a parent under 20 years of age. This childcare support will not affect your own family’s benefits or allowances. If you are under 20 years of age

this support is not means-tested and you do not have to be in receipt of benefits or have a low income in order to have your childcare paid for. Please contact any of our Student Services teams for more details.

Childcare (for learners aged 20+ years)We are keen to help you with the cost of your childcare whilst studying. The childcare subsidy you receive will depend upon the details submitted by you on your funding form and childcare support application form. If you are eligible for support this will normally be paid direct to your registered childcare provider.
