July 26, 2012 • Golden Princess • Tonight's dress: formal Weather: Today's Forecast: Partly Cloudy. - High: 58DF Low: 50°F - Sunrise 4:48arn / Sunset 8:42pm Tomorrow's Forecast: Sunny - High: 60°F Low: 55°F The Officer's Daily Log From the Navigator In the early hours of the morning we approached a very narrow section called Snow Passage The Snow Passage passes between Zarembo Island and Bushy Island and leads us from the Sumner Strait into the Clarence Strait. Following the Clarence Strait we will continue southwards for Ketchikan. Passing Guard Island on our starboard side, we shall then enter the Tongass Narrows, the passage in which the town of Ketchikan lies. After departing Ketchikan we will once again transit the Tongass Narrows south-eastwards passing between Pennock Island and Revillagigedo Island. Turning around Mary Island, we will enter Danger Passage that will lead us from the American controlled waters of Alaska into Canadian territorial waters. On entering Canadian waters we shall remain on a southerly course and enter the Hecate Strait. We will keep on following various southerly courses throughout the evening and into the night on our way to Victoria. Meet Executive Chef Joel Directo Executive Chef Joel Directo hails from Pangasinan in the Philippines. He began a culinary arts apprenticeship at a 5-star hotel, and in 1990, he proudly earned a gold medal in Saipan's annual culinary contest. After working at several resorts throughout Asia, Joel took his talents to the seas and was promoted to Executive Chef in 2004. He recently became the first non-Italian chef awarded as a member of the F.I.C. (the Italian Culinary Federation) and is a member of the World Association of Chefs Society. This cozy port city is just three miles long and three blocks wide, but it does not lack in options for spending your day. One of Ketchikan's most visited attractions is Totem Bight State Park, where 14 intricately carved and painted totem poles offer a glimpse into the native Tlingit and Haida Indian cultures. The Great Alaskan Lumberjack Show is just a short walk from the ship and offers unique entertainment, from lumberjacks climbing 50-foot trees to competitions including axe throwing and log rolling. There are also several fishing expeditions, flight tours, and even the rare chance to snorkel in the waters of Mountain Point, where you can discover the diversity of Alaska's marine life. It's been my experience while sailing the world that the personality of a region comes through clearly in its cuisine. The distinctive flavors of Alaska are no exception. From smoked and cured salmon to tender Alaskan Halibut, it's no surprise that people like to indulge in seafood when they visit Alaska. Fresh sourdough bread is also often served with meals, and you can even try reindeer sausage! You can get a taste of these staples and other traditional fare during your visit to Ketchikan, as well as through the regional dishes we prepare from scratch during our voyage. On the ship, my dedicated team of 220 crew members is always busy slicing and dicing, baking and cooking up a feast for the senses.
