The GJW Titmuss Customer Questionnaire
During November to December 2013, the team here at GJW Titmuss launched our own customer questionnaire to gain insights into your pet dog’s dietary requirements.
Promoted via Facebook, Survey Monkey and our database, this presentation looks at the data we gathered and the conclusions we have drawn from 675 responses.
Take a look at what we found!
Age and Gender of Respondents
The most popular age category of entrants to complete our questionnaire was 46 - 55.
68% of all responses were females, with 32% of answers completed by males.
Number of Dogs OwnedThe majority of people own one pet dog, however 36% owned two, 8% owned three, and 4% (27 of the total respondents) owned five or more! – They must have a lot of space in their home.
Your Pet’s WeightAccording to owner perceptions, 94% of respondents stated that their dog’s weight is average, whilst 4% believe that their pet is overweight.
Most owners therefore believe that their pet’s condition is stable and healthy.
Buying HabitsIn the modern world, technology continues to shape our habits, as 85% of people now buy their dog food online.
In contrast, only 14% purchase their dog food from a pet store, leaving just 6% buying from the supermarket and 0.9% (6 responses) from the vets.
Food PurchasedWe asked you which type of food you usually purchase - here’s a look at what we found:
• High quality/premium food – 74%• Specialist food (for pet allergies & specific requirements) – 28%• Low quality bargain products – 3%• Don’t know – 3%
Premium food has far more health advantages compared to bargain products, so it’s great to see that this figure is high.
Favourite FlavoursYour dogs have a varied diet, incorporating a range of different flavours:
Chicken (61%)Lamb (36%)Turkey (19%)Beef (10%)Duck (8%)Rabbit (7%)Other (9%) – included salmon, pork and venison
All of these foods can serve to give your dog the nutrients they need.
Specific Brands and Dietary Requirements
32% of people stated that they purchase specific brands of pet food due to their dog’s dietary requirements.
Reasons for this included:
• Sensitive stomachs• Skin problems• Age• Weight
Spend on Specialised Dog Food
• The average owner will spend around £252 - £480 per year on specialised dog food
• 46% of people spend £21-£40 per month on this type of food
• Only 5/199 respondents to this question spend over £100
Monthly Spend on Dog FoodTrends for monthly spend on dog food (including snacks) followed a similar pattern to spend on specialised food.
The most popular category was once again £21 - £40 (46%), followed by £41 – £60 (32%) and £61 - £80 (15%).
Only 3% of owners spend over £100 on dog food per month.
Factors When Purchasing Food
When owners purchase food, quality is the most important factor in the decision making process (61%).
This is followed by:
• Ingredients because of dietary requirements (22%)• Cost (9%)• Brand (7%)
This shows that owners are more concerned about providing a quality and sufficient type of food for their dog over anything else.
Treats and Supplements (Monthly spend)
The average owner spends up to £240 on snacks per year on top of their standard or specialised dog food bill.
However, 82% of owners don’t venture passed the £20 mark, and only 1% spend £61 - £80 per month.
Feeding Your Dog - Treats
When given in moderation, treats can form part of a stable and healthy diet.
According to the statistics, 75% of people feed their dog treats on a daily basis.
3% of owners avoid treats all together.
Preferred SnacksOwners feed their dogs a wide selection of treats, including:
Vegetables (41%)Meat (39%)Fish (22%)Biscuits (21%)Fruit (17%)Bread (9%)Ice cream (4%)Crisps (3%)Nuts (2%)
Vegetables, meat and fish are healthy variations of treats, but remember not to feed snacks to your dog too often, as this can lead to weight gain and obesity issues.
Establishing a Feeding Regime
Pet owners get information for their dog’s diet and feeding regime from a range of sources.
Advice from other breeders tops the list (37%), with 34% following the information on the packaging.
Other popular answers included asking the vet, acquiring information online, and advice from books and magazines.
