Thanks to nominations from customers and community members, Leesburg widow Ann Harris and residents of Doorways for Women and Families’ Safehouse, the only domestic violence shelter in Arlington, celebrated the holidays under a new roof. “Over the past decade, we’ve given roofs to individuals and nonprofits throughout Northern Virginia. So it’s fitting that we have one of each this year. In both cases, the new roofs will help ease the burden of struggling women in our community,” said Steve Gotschi, DryHome’s owner. “I know what it’s like to struggle, and this is my opportunity to thank those who helped me along the way.” Ann Harris’ life has been redefined by cancer, losing her sister and husband to the disease. She is now raising her sister’s children while caring for her father who has colon cancer. In nominating her, neighbor Kelly McKnight said: “It is heartbreaking to drive by and see the blue tarp that covers her home and know that a gracious, humble older woman lives there without the means to get a real roof.” Doorways for Women and Families’ Safehouse is home to 11 women and children at a time who are fleeing domestic violence. The Safehouse’s 17 year-old roof leaked, but the cost to replace it was too great. Volunteer Tani Lublin explained: to those “who live and work at the Safehouse– it is not simply a roof, but a canopy of shelter and safety, a sense of security and wellbeing.” Over the past decade, other recipients have included: school bus driver Barbara Green; veteran Hubert Laconia; Good Shepherd Alliance; Reston Interfaith; Falls Church Cub Scout House; and Gabriel Homes.

The result of our current home makeover was astonishing. The 20 year old existing roof was in desperate need to be replaced. It had several leaks, missing cedar shake and was deteriorating.

The new roof we installed was a Waldun CCA treated medium cedar shake. The treated shake will ensure a longer life expectancy than a non-treated shake. It is comparable to having a deck replaced with pressure treated wood vs. plain wood. The family will sleep more comfortable under a beautiful roof which will last many years.

“Everyone Wants A DryHome”

DryHome marked the 10th anniversary of its Free Roof for the Holidays program by selecting two recipients for new roofs. Thanks

to nominations from customers and community members, Leesburg widow Ann Harris and residents of Doorways for Women and Families’ Safehouse, the only domestic

violence shelter in Arlington, celebrated the holidays under a new roof.

“I know what it’s like to struggle, and this is my opportunity to thank those who helped me along the way.”

Ann Harris’ life has been redefined by cancer, losing her sister and husband to the disease. She is now raising her sister’s children while caring for her father who has colon cancer. In nominating her, neighbor Kelly McKnight said: “It is heartbreaking to drive by and see the blue tarp that covers her home and know that a gracious, humble older woman lives there without the means to get a real roof.”

Doorways for Women and Families’ Safehouse is home to 11 women and children at a time who are fleeing domestic violence. The Safehouse’s 17 year-old roof leaked, but the cost to replace it was too great. Volunteer Tani Lublin explained: to those “who live and work at the Safehouse– it is not simply a roof, but a canopy of shelter and safety, a sense of security and wellbeing.”
