Public Sector Equality Duty
• The Equality Duty (Equality Act 2010) is a duty on public bodies and others carrying out public functions. It ensures that public bodies consider the needs of all individuals in their day to day work – in shaping policy, in delivering services, and in relation to their own employees.
How does it work?• It requires SCAS to:-
• eliminate unlawful discrimination • advance equality of opportunity• foster good relations between
people who share a protected characteristic and people who do not share it.
What are protected characteristics?
• Age• Gender• Disability• Religion/Belief• Ethnicity• Sexual Orientation• Pregnancy and maternity• Gender reassignment• Marriage and civil partnerships
How do we achieve this?
• Robust Strategy
• Good governance
• Meaningful community engagement (patient forums, grading and objectives set by communities)
Specific duty (Equality Act 2010)
• Publish strategy every 4 years
• Publish appropriate information annually (workforce and patient)
• Publish objectives achieved annually
• Any question?
