Colin Campbell

Colin is a GDC registered Specialist in Oral Surgery who qualified from the Uni-versity of Glasgow in 1994. Colin has worked previously in oral and maxillofacial surgery units in Glasgow, Nottingham and Derby,

before entering practice as a vocational trainee and then becoming a vocational trainer. Colin became involved in im-plant dentistry as a clinician in 1998 and began lecturing in 2000. He was awarded Fellowship of the International Team for Implantology in 2006 and was the Com-munications Officer for the UK and Ireland section sitting on the Leadership Team of the organisation from 2011 – 2014. Colin is the Clinical Director at The Campbell Clinic, which is a multi-disciplinary private specialist practice in Nottingham and also the Clinical Director of Refine Specialist Dental Care in Derbyshire.

Ian Dunn

Ian qualified from Leeds in 1998. In 2001 he was award-ed Membership of the Faculty of General Dental Practitioners. In 2002 he joined the teaching staff at Liverpool Dental Hospital

in the periodontology department where he is currently a Senior Clinical Teacher and Undergraduate Teaching Lead in periodontology. In 2010 he completed his MSc in periodontology and in 2013 he was admitted to the GDC specialist list in periodontics.

Ian spends three days a week in private practice in the North West of England and takes referrals for all aspects of perio-dontology. He is the British Society of Periodontology regional representative for Merseyside and Cheshire.

Phil Friel

Philip graduated from Glasgow University with degrees in anatomy (1998) and dental sur-gery (2000). In 2010, after working in a num-ber of private practices, Philip opened his own clinic, ‘Philip Friel Advanced Dentistry’ in Glasgow, heading an 18-strong team. Philip concentrates on restorative and cosmetic dentistry with particular focus on dental implantology, including bone grafting, immediate im-plant placement and loading together with soft tissue surgery.

In naming Philip in Dentistry Magazine’s 2010 list of the UK’s Top 50 Most Influ-ential Dentists, the publication said he is “regarded as one of Scotland’s finest implant surgeons”.

Philip is a member of a number of key professional organisations including; the British and American Academies of Cosmetic Dentistry, the ADI, the ITI, the PEERS group and the American Academy of Osseointegration. He is past- President of the ADI.

Stephen Jacobs

Stephen qualified from Birmingham University in 1985 and went into general dental prac-tice. He started in implant dentistry in 1992 and since then has placed / restored over 5000 implants and carried out over 900 sinus

grafts. He now lectures extensively on all aspects of dental implantology through-out Europe and the UK. Stephen runs his implant referral practice in Glasgow, UK, where all aspects of implant and recon-structive dentistry are carried out.

Stephen is a Past President of the ADI and a committee member of the American Academy of Osseointegration. He is a founding Board member of PEERS UK. He is on the editorial board of three jour-nals and runs a variety of courses at his practice, including a comprehensive year course for those wishing to get started in the field of implantology, sinus grafting and restorative programmes.

Andrew Legg

Andrew Legg graduated from the Univer-sity of Manchester in 2001. Extensive experience in general practice has given Andrew grounding in all as-pects of dental care allow-ing a fully comprehensive approach to patient care. Andrew has undertaken

countless hours of training, including an 18-month Clinical Certificate in Implan-tology at the University of Sheffield and Advanced Surgical Training at the Royal College of Surgeons.

More recently, Andrew passed his Mem-bership of the Faculty of Dental Surgery, Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh. Andrew also works as a Clinical Teaching Fellow in Oral Surgery at the University of Manchester.

After graduating at the University of Wales Col-lege of Medicine Dental School, Michael obtained a basic training in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and subsequently fulfilled the

requirements set out by the GDC, to be registered as a specialist in Oral Surgery. He held the position of Honorary Associ-ate Specialist to the departments of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Charing Cross Hospital, London and at Bedford General Hospital, from 1991 to 2001.

For over 20 years Michael has led the way for implant dentistry in the UK, becoming one of the world’s most respected and renowned implant surgeons. His con-siderable portfolio of research has been groundbreaking and he is one of the most sought after lecturer’s in his field.

In 2007 in recognition of his expertise in the field of implant dentistry, Michael was given the prestigious honour of being made a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh, without examina-tion. Michael is on the Executive Council and Board of Directors of the Academy of Osseointegration and in 2005 was induct-ed as the 75th Fellow of this premier in-ternational implant organisation. Michael is also a Past President of the ADI and in 2011 was made an Honorary Life Member.

Phil Ower

Phil qualified from King’s London in 1978. He joined the RAF after qualifying and was a general dental practitioner until taking an MSc in periodontology in 1992, after which he was

RAF Adviser in periodontology and ran the RAF School of Dental Hygiene.

For 10 years he worked alongside the renowned Bernie Kieser at the Periodontal Practice in London and now practices exclusively at the Briars Dental Centre in Newbury. He has been an examiner for the Royal College of Surgeons of England (MGDS) and has served two terms on the Council of the British Society of Periodontology (BSP). He is serving a third term on the BSP Council prior to his Presidency of the BSP in 2015-16. He is responsible for the perio component of the FGDP(UK) Diploma in Restorative Dentistry in both London and Manchester.

Amit Patel

Amit is registered with the General Dental Council as a Specialist in Periodontics. His special interests are dental implants, regenera-tive and aesthetic peri-odontics.

Amit graduated from the University of Liverpool and completed a 4 year special-ist training programme in periodontics at Guy’s, King’s & St Thomas’ Dental Institute.

Amit obtained his Membership in Restor-ative Dentistry from the Royal College of Surgeons of England and became a registered Specialist in Periodontics. He has worked with several different implant systems, lectured both nationally and in-ternationally and published in the field of dental implantology and periodontics.

Amit is also an Associate Specialist in Peri-odontics at the Birmingham Dental School. He has recently been invited to become a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. Amit is also the principal spe-cialist and director at Birmingham Dental Specialists.

Mital Patel

Dr. Patel is a Consultant and Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer in Restorative Dentistry at The Royal London Dental Hospital and Queen Mary University of London. He was awarded his Bachelors degree in Dental Science in 2002 and in Dental Surgery in 2005, both from the University of Cardiff Dental School. Following a series of hospital posts in Restorative Dentistry and Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery he was awarded membership to the Faculty of Dental Surgery at the Royal College of Surgeons of England through examination. Dr Patel is the clinical lead for dental trauma and endodontics at The Royal London Hospital and is involved in postgraduate teaching in implant dentistry. He also enjoys rehabilitating patients who have had severe trauma to the teeth and their supporting tissues.

Dr Patel is a GDC registered specialist in Restorative Dentistry, Prosthodontics, Periodontology and Endodontics. He is also an elected council member for the British Society for Restorative Dentistry and a recognised speaker and Fellow of the International Team for Implantology (ITI).

Shakeel Shahdad

Dr. Shakeel Shahdad is a Consultant and Honorary Clinical Senior Lecturer in Restorative Dentistry at The Royal London Dental Hospital, and Barts & The

London School of Medicine and Dentistry. He is the Chairman for the Advisory Board in Implant Dentistry for the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, a Fellow of the International Team for Implantology and a Diplomate of The British Society of Oral Implantology. He is also the current Chairman of the ITI UK & Ireland Section.

He is a specialist in Restorative Dentistry, Periodontics, Prosthodontics and Endodontics. Apart from the specialist restorative treatment, his areas of particular interest include aesthetic implant dentistry and management of complex restorative cases including functional and aesthetic rehabilitation of patients with hypodontia and toothwear.

He is active in clinical research and has secured various research grants. He is a co-author of a textbook in periodontology and implant dentistry, besides publishing in peer-reviewed journals. He also runs a multi-specialist referral practice in the West End of London.

David Speechley

David restored his first implant in 1990, well before they were mainstream and when there were few (if any) recognised training pathways in dental Implantology. In 2003 David gained his

diploma in medical informatics from the Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh, and became a part time lecturer at both Liverpool University Dental School, and Liverpool University Medical School. More recently he has become a postgraduate dental tutor for the North West (Mersey) Deanery, the Dental representative for Levers Ethics Committee, member of the Local Dental Committee, and past Treasurer of the Association of Dental Implantology. Over recent years David has mentored many dentists in the practice of implant dentistry, and is a registered mentor for the Association of Dental Implantology, and the ITI, (International Team for Implantology).

Following completion of both the Post Graduate Diploma in Implant Dentistry, and MSc. was invited to become a member of PEERS. David is a member of the Faculty of Examiners for the Royal College of Surgeons England. David is a Senior Lecturer and the Mentor Lead for the MSc Programme in Dental Implantology at Edge Hill University.

Paul Tipton

Professor Paul Tipton is an internationally acclaimed Prosthodontist who has worked in private practice for more than 30 years.

President of the British Academy of Re-storative Dentistry, Professor Tipton now divides his time between operating private referral clinics in Manchester, Chester and London and teaching other dentists the skills and techniques needed for a success-ful career.

A passionate and charismatic speaker, Paul has been teaching for over 20 years, both in the UK and internationally. Over 2,500 delegates have attended his courses to boost their skills, knowledge and income.

He completed a residency programme in oral surgery at St. Istvan Hospital in Buda-pest, Hungary (1992-1996). He completed his internship programme in periodontics at UCLA.

He graduated from the Fellowship pro-gram (1999-2000) in Implant Dentistry at Loma Linda University, California, and was appointed Assistant Professor the following year. Prof. Urban teaches implant dentistry in the graduate programme at Loma Linda University.  He is licensed in the state of California (USA) and  has a private practice in Budapest, Hungary.

Prof. Urban received his PhD degree in 2012 and he is currently an Associate Professor in the Department of periodon-tology at the University of Szeged.

Prof. Urban has published scientific articles and text book chapers on bone re-generation and soft tissue reconstructive surgery around dental implants. He is an invited speaker internationally in the field of implant dentistry

Course Leader BiographiesSimon Wright

Dr Wright has been a principal partner of the Glencairn Dental group of practices since 2002.  He is a Founding Director of both Dental Implant Resource Ltd and Implant

Centres of Excellence Ltd. He is a Senior Lecturer in Implantology at the Univer-sity of Edge Hill and is the Academic Lead for the MSc in Dental Implantology.  He lectures nationally and interna-tionally for Astra Tech, Straumann, the ITI, Mersey Deanery, and on the MSc courses at Salford, Manchester, Cardiff and Sheffield. 

Dr Wright has also a keen interest in teaching and is a trainer for young foundation dentists and nurses. He has written many courses for nurses and dentists, and has gained his Postgradu-ate Teaching Certificate and Fellowship to the Higher Education Academy.  He has personally trained and mentored over 500 dentists and nurses.

He was awarded with Best Young Den-tist of the Year (NW) in 2010-11 and Best Independent Contractor on the Wirral in 2009-10 (this was against all providers of NHS care including Medical Doctors).

Dr Wright is the Education Director for ICE Ltd (Implant Centres of Excellence).  This consists of an educational academy; the ICE institute, a network of clinics; the referral centres, and ICE Association; support and interaction. 

Professor Ucer is on the specialist list of Oral Surgery. He is an elected Fellow of the International Team for Implantology (ITI. He is an Honorary Profes-sor and Clinical Lead of the MSc programme in Implan-

tology at University of Salford (2008-2015) and at Edge Hill University (2014-). He is a past president (2011-2013) of the Associa-tion of Dental Implantology (ADI). He is a co-founder of the ICE Foundation that incorporates Implant Centres of Excellence (ICE) clinics, ICE Postgraduate Dental institute and ICE Mentee School/MSc programme in implant dentistry. Cemal has been running the highly respected Multi-System Implantology Certificate Course at Trafford General in Manchester since the early 90’s where he has person-ally directed the postgraduate training of 100’s of dentists. He has lectured widely in implantology since the 1990’s and runs a private referral practice limited to oral surgery. and implantology at Oaklands Hospital in Manchester.
