On March 3rd, 2015, our OSPCA agent seized a
cat who had been left without food or water in an
apartment building. She was immediately assessed
by our veterinary care staff. Her skin was scaly, her
fur was coarse, her nose was swollen, and it was
observed that her right eye was injured.
Now affectionately known as Kate, this sweet girl
seemed to have a number of medical conditions.
After consultation with several veterinarians, it was
determined that her eye injury was a result of some
sort of trauma. We don’t know Kate’s story, but it
was clear that she needed a new home and a second
chance in life.
Kate immediately stole the hearts of many staff,
including our Animal Care Coordinator, who fostered
her until a treatment plan was developed. It was
determined that Kate required bloodwork, infectious
disease testing and, ultimately, surgery to remove
her injured eye. Kate has since had treatment and
undergone surgery, and she has been placed into
the adoption program.
It is always difficult to see animals like Kate enter the
shelter, and we always feel a tug at the hearstrings
to see them go to their adoptive homes because

we’ve come to know and care for them. But that’s
what the Kingston Humane Society is here for: to put
the pieces back together for animals in need, as we
were able to do for Kate. She came to us needing
food, veterinary care, shelter and comfort. Without
your donations and support, who knows what the
outcome for her would have been? But because you
supported the KHS, Kate is now healthy, happy and
enjoying the first days of the rest of her life.

Update: After more than three months of treatment and care, we’re overjoyed to report that Kate was adopted into a new, forever home where she has a doggie companion and a family who adores her.

Welcome to our summer newsletter! If you are a regular reader, you have probably noticed a new look to our publication. Thanks to a generous donation from a loyal supporter who wished the
funds to be used to help in our fundraising, we are in the process of updating our information with a fresh look. Our goal is to be able to provide the community and potential donors with professional-looking information about our mission and build on the support we need to help our community’s animals.
Our 2015 Annual General Meeting was a great success, with members coming out to review the business of the Society, elect new board members (see p. 3) and learn about animal welfare initiatives across the province. The meeting also marked the start of another busy summer season, as litters of kittens come in, our intake of cats, stray or owned, pregnant or not, increases, and roaming dogs are brought in by Animal Control or the public. Each year we anticipate that our shelter and satellite adoption centres will be full, while employees balance workloads with well-earned summer vacations.
As temperatures rise, so do our emergency responses to calls from the public regarding pets left unattended in cars or involved in accidents and requiring emergency care. It makes for hectic days and a drain on our resources.
That is why our annual September event, Big Paws (this year at Lake Ontario Park), is so important
for animals and staff alike. It is a day for caring community members, with or without pets, to come together and make a difference in the lives of the animals. The funds raised help us provide animal care at the shelter, ensure investigation of reports of animal cruelty, abuse and neglect in the community, educate pet owners and ensure that our standards of care can be maintained.
While you may donate at any time during the year through our website, by mail, or by making a call to the shelter, your support at Big Paws is always an inspiration. On behalf of the staff and volunteers, the dogs who attend the event and all our community’s animals in need, I hope to see you there!

Until every pet is wanted your gift is needed
I’m happy to introduce myself as the Kingston Humane Society’s new Volunteer Coordinator!
Before joining KHS, I was the volunteer coordinator for the Sexual Assault Centre Kingston for over seven
years. I have experience in fund development and special events, and I truly enjoy working with people in the community. I have been working with not-for-profit organizations for over 11 years.
I joined the KHS team on May 11th, and in this short time, I have seen just how much hard work, passion and dedication the staff and volunteers provide to the shelter; it’s truly inspiring. Volunteers give so much of their time and energy for a cause they believe in, and for that, they are priceless.
Thanks so much, Sue Jones, the former Volunteer Coordinator, for all your help and support during this transition. I wish you the best of luck in your new adventure, and I know I have some big shoes to fill. I’m thrilled to have joined the Kingston Humane Society and am looking forward to
working with this amazing team.

Anna herself was very thin and undernourished, having given all she had to her puppies during her
pregnancy, but what a wonderful mother she was! The staff soon discovered that she wouldn’t leave her puppies for anything. If food and water were not within reach of her she would go without. Her puppies came first!

None of us likes to think
about a dog out in the
freezing cold weather in
January, without food or
shelter, much less a mother
with newborn puppies. However, this was the plight of a dog we named Anna.
Anna was brought to us by Animal Control as a stray on January 29th, 2015. Finding the only shelter she could, Anna had taken refuge under an uninhabited cottage to have her puppies. By the time she was found and brought to KHS, two of her eight puppies had died from the cold and, despite the efforts of the animal care staff, one more puppy died shortly after arrival at KHS. The remaining puppies were examined, warmed up and returned to Anna, who had been given food and water and made comfortable in a quiet area in the shelter.

Anna and her five surviving puppies stayed at KHS for several weeks to ensure that all were healthy and thriving. Once weaned, the puppies went into foster homes until they were old enough to be adopted.
Anna herself was getting healthy and gaining
weight, and by the end of March, she became available for adoption. A sweet and gentle soul, Anna soon found her new forever home. There were tears of joy shed by the KHS staff, who had all fallen in love with Anna, to see her leave, knowing
she would never again have to be alone and in need.
Thanks to donors like you, the Kingston Humane Society had the resources Anna and her puppies needed: food, vaccinations and other medicine, as well as shelter and care. In addition, all the puppies and Anna herself were spayed or neutered before they were adopted. Without you, this care would not have been possible. If you ever wonder how, specifically, your support makes a difference in the lives of the many animals KHS cares for, just think
of Anna and her pups. Thank you!

A big, tail-wagging thank-you to everyone who helped make the 2015 Bowl for the Animals a resounding success! Twenty-two teams took part in this year’s fundraiser. A particular shout-out to Starbucks, who brought SEVEN teams and raised over $2,700. In total, we raised over $14,500 through donations, the online auction, raffles, sponsorships and canteen sales.
Thanks to Vayda (photo at left), winner of our 50/50 draw, who promptly donated her winnings back to KHS. Our gratitude to the bowlers who collected pledges, pledgers, event sponsors, volunteers and auction item donors, and to our canteen sponsors Starbucks, Culligan Water and Tony’s Pizza, Subs and Ice Cream Parlour — the animals at the shelter thank you!
We especially thank PetValu for their Platinum annual sponsorship and Princess Animal Hospital/Downtown Animal Hospital (team photo at right,
above) for their Gold sponsorship.
You bowled us over with your support!
Donations of canned pet food will be gratefully accepted.
Crafters for CrittersCrafters for Critters are creative volunteers who make beautiful, useful items, for people and pets, to raise funds for the animals at the KHS. The Crafters are looking for donations of wool, new material and any crafting supplies. You’ll see their creations at the Sheep Dog Trials (August 7–9) and the Women’s Art Festival (August 16) and at their gift shop at the shelter.
