The many hats of KHS

At our 2016 Annual General Meeting, 45 KHS members were present for a review of the work of the organization in the past year. An important element of the AGM is the review of the KHS’s

financial statements. As we are a registered charity, our financial reporting must meet Canadian Revenue Agency standards. This review is also a reminder to the membership that our financial obligations extend beyond animal care. It is easy to forget that the KHS is also an employer, a property owner and a pound service provider. Each of these areas involves specific administrative and financial investment.

As an employer, we adhere to Ministry of Labour regulations, the Ontario Employment Standards Act, Health and Safety and Workplace Safety and Insurance Board legislation as well as requirements of other regulatory bodies, such as the Canada Revenue Agency. We must ensure that our staff have appropriate education and skills and a safe working environment so that they can focus on the care of animals who present with a variety of health and behaviour issues. The costs involved in meeting our legislative responsibilities may be overshadowed by those related to veterinary care, food and medical treatment for the animals.

As a property owner and provider of pound services to the municipality, we must ensure employee and visitor safety and meet animal care standards. Ongoing costs of insurance, utilities, air circulation systems, groundskeeping, building maintenance and other responsibilities related to the facility and property

are significant. Our aim is to ensure that the shelter exceeds standards for animal care, can accommodate animal and human requirements and is a source of pride for our employees and of safety and comfort for the animals.

Recent and current investments in technology are resulting in increased efficiencies. Production of electronic tax receipts, a vibrant website to facilitate communication and donations and an e-mail management system will allow us to achieve critical financial goals.

Operating a shelter means wearing many hats. Ensuring that the KHS is a safe workplace, maintaining the infrastructure needed for the health and comfort of animals and visitors and keeping supporters and potential adopters well informed are essential, if less visible, elements of our daily work.

Message from the Executive Director

The Kingston Humane Society participates in the Royal Canin Elite Shelter Program. When you register when you adopt a pet or purchase Royal Canin food from the shelter, we receive rewards points that offset the cost of food for the animals in our care.

Kim and Dale Holliday — volunteers since 2013This dynamic mother-and-daughter duo have volunteered for the KHS in numerous roles — fostering animals, running bake sales, organizing fundraisers,

helping with adoption events, working in the office, and much more.

When asked what they enjoy most about volunteering with the Kingston Humane Society, their response was this: “Mostly, we love knowing that we are contributing to an organization that cares for the well-being of animals. Through volunteering, we have met some really great people, fellow volunteers and employees who share our passion for animal welfare.”

Mary Anne and Mike French — volunteers since June 2015

Husband and wife Mike and Mary Anne have volunteered with cat cuddling, cleaning, adoption and fundraising events and dog walking. Mike also helps with maintenance and repairs in the shelter. When Mary Anne was asked how volunteering with the KHS has impacted their lives, she said: “Volunteering for Kingston Humane Society has been wonderful.

Mike really enjoys caring for the cats. He has some disabilities, and getting out of bed is hard because of the pain. Looking

after the cats and walking the dogs gives him a purpose. Loving these cats gives me comfort and the cats give back the love. While waiting for their forever home they become used to being loved. We both are retired, and it’s good to have something to look forward to. After working all your life, you need something to do. It is hard being retired. We love animals, so what better way to fill in your time and to give back?! You are doing something you love, not something you have to do.”

Thank you, Kim and Dale, Mike and Mary Anne, and all of the other wonderful KHS volunteers, for your hard work and your commitment to helping animals in need.

Until every pet is wanted your gift is needed Summer 2016 – 4

On a freezing day in January 2016, a caring member of the public found the cat we called Albert on the side of the road, after he had been hit by a car, and brought him to the shelter.

It was obvious that this sweet cat needed immediate medical care, as his right eye was badly damaged and he was in a lot of pain. Our veterinary care team acted quickly. The veterinarian assessed him and determined that his eye could not be saved and would have to be surgically removed. The Gibson Surgical Suite at the shelter was readied and Albert was prepped for surgery immediately. During the preparations, the veterinary care team noticed that one of his canine teeth had also been broken during the accident and was causing him pain.

Albert’s right eye and the broken tooth were removed. He came through the surgery well, and shortly after he went to a loving foster home to heal. While he was there, he was fed wet food only and was given pain medication and antibiotics.

Once he was fully healed, Albert was placed in the KHS adoption program, and in February 2016 he found his forever home, where he is greatly loved.

If you are a pet owner, you understand the costs associated with caring for pets. Food, vaccinations, flea control, toys and medical care when needed — it all adds up, far too quickly. KHS deals with these financial challenges every day. Regardless of the state of the economy, the abandoned, lost, neglected and abused pets who have found their way here depend on the continued generosity of others for the food, shelter and medical care that the KHS provides. Thank you for being part of the

community of support that makes it possible for the KHS to be there for animals like Albert.

Crafters for CrittersThe Crafters will be selling their beautiful handmade crafts, with all proceeds going to the KHS, at the Sheep Dog Trials at Grass Creek Park on August 5–7 and at Big Paws at Lake Ontario Park on Sunday, September 11, 2016. The Crafters appreciate donations of all types of craft materials—please drop them off at the shelter.

Community of caring gives Albert a second chance

Wish list A big, tail-wagging thank-you to everyone who helped to make the 2016 Bowl for the Animals a resounding success!!

The Cloverleaf Bowling lanes were completely full, with 24 teams (two more than last year) taking part. We send a big shout-out to Starbucks, who brought FIVE teams from different stores in the area and together raised over $2,700.

In total, we raised $19,000 through donations, an online auction, raffles, sponsorships and canteen sales.

The winner of our 50/50 draw was K. Holliday, who promptly donated her winnings back to KHS. Thank you!

L. Walsh won the raffle prize of a Petcube interactive wi-fi pet monitoring camera, which was sponsored by Royal Canin.

To all the bowlers who collected pledges, those who supported them by making donations, event sponsors, volunteers and donors of auction items, the animals at the shelter thank you for your support!

A special thanks to our sponsors:
