Many of our new members are looking to build their swing from the ground up but

don’t know where to start. This SwingBuild™ Guide will be your map to “Unlocking

Your Best Swing.”

If you are a professional hitter, don’t just skip over this section.

A question that I’m asked often is “How many times should I do each drill?” The

answer is different for every single hitter. For instance, if you are one of my MLB

hitters working on the Stride Drill it may be something you master in a very short

period of time. But, a much younger hitter may need to spend 10 minutes a day for

a month to master the Stride Drill.

My philosophy is that you should “master” these simple body movements before

moving too far ahead.

As a reminder, no matter what age or skill level, hitting is never completely mas-

tered and if you’re looking for a quick fix you should revisit your approach. This

program is designed for hitters who are dedicated to the process and willing to

commit to it for the long term. This is where I see the most significant improve-

ments in bat speed, power, bat path etc.

All of this to say, I’m totally thrilled that you’ve joined our group of hitters. Every

Body MovementAre you building a new swing from scratch or fine tuning it? One of the biggest mistakes coaches and

athletes make is to focus on individual swing fixes and not get to the root of the issue. In the short term, like

going into a weekend tournament, these fixes can feel and seem helpful. But in the long term, they’re not

really helping the player develop an elite swing.

Want to know the secret to improving your swing? Improve your body movements and athleticism. Spend

more time on learning how to make the right moves with drills like The Separation Drill, Half Turns, Full

Turns and The Stride Drill. Many hitters want to skip ahead or over those drills. I tell all of my young hitters,

if you were to spend a day watching me with my pro hitters you’d see more body movement work than

actual hitting. And the homework I assign pro hitters? It’s 90% body movement work and 10% hitting.

Now I want you to imagine their body control and athleticism vs. the average 10, 12 or 16 year old. How

much body movement work do you think I prescribe to those younger hitters?

Swing WorkWhen it comes to Swing Work, always remember that quality is better than quantity. Sure, we want to take

a lot of hacks, but if those swings are reinforcing a bad swing you’re wasting your time. I’d rather see you

take 20 good swings a day then 200 bad swings a day.

I treat Swing Work as a progression. Body Movements at Level One, Tee as Level Two, Front Toss as Level

Three and Live Pitching as the final level. Everyone progresses through the levels at different speeds and

we sometimes spend a lot of time at one level. Having said that, we don’t exclusively stay at one level

either.

For example: If I have a hitter who needs to learn a new swing movement, we work in the mirror and focus

on learning the body movement and then will use the tee and front toss to reinforce that body movement

over and over. If I feel like I can throw live pitching to them without them going back to their “old” patterns,

I’ll do it and if they go back, we have to go back a level.

Every hitter is different and is starting at a different place in their

development. I’ve created this 8 week sample program based on an

average hitter’s journey. Be self-aware. Create more time on areas you

need and move faster through areas that you are consistent in. Every

good hitter makes adjustments, but this is a great place to start.

The Secret ToolPeople ask me all the time about which hitting tools are the best out there. Which ones I

endorse and use with my hitters. Is it Zepp? Is it Ammo Bats? etc. etc.

You want to know my “Secret Tool?” It’s the mirror. We use it every session and when I give

hitters homework (especially my pro guys) it always involves a lot of mirror work. Hitters need

to see what they’re working on and when they do the body movements in the mirror it gives

them immediate feedback. If you are a coach you can purchase a cheap stand up mirror

(somewhat unbreakable versions exist) and use at your facility or field and if you’re parent/

player you can obviously purchase one or use one in your home (mirror-ed closet doors are

perfect). We want to see how the whole body moves through the phases of the swing.
