Welcome to Your HealthWelcome to The Governor issue of our members’ magazine. We provide mental well-being and physical health support, mostly in the community, to people aged 0-100. The wide range of care we offer means that you, or someone close to you, may need our care at some point in life.
We know that, if you do ever need our support, you expect to receive the very best care. That’s why in this edition, we’re inviting you to step forward and become a Public Governor.
Being a Public Governor is an important role. It’s one that will see you working with us to better understand what local people really think of our services. You’ll share your ideas for how we can keep improving and help us appoint some of our most senior people. You’ll also be invited to take part in decision making groups and attend membership events.
We’ve produced a guide to help you understand what a Governor role means and on page 11 we tell you how you can receive our Governor information booklet.
It has never been more important for patients, carers and local people to voice their views about NHS services. We hope that as a Foundation Trust member you’ll take the next step and work with us to make your local NHS services even better for you, your family and your community.

Q. What are the types of activities I will do as a Public Governor?Sadia, Girlington
A. As a Governor you will have some statutory duties. These will include things like the appointment of the Chair and Non-Executive Directors, receiving the annual report and accounts and representing members views at the Council of Governor meetings in a fair way.
You’ll also need to attend induction and training sessions and tell members about the things which were discussed at the Council of Governor meetings.
You might also sit on Governor committees, help develop our Membership Strategy and attend membership events.

Q. What support would be available to me if I became a Governor?Peter, Bingley
A. Our Foundation Trust Membership office will provide you with information and some administrative support. This would include things like booking venues for meetings with members and making sure you receive Governor meeting papers.
If you were elected as a governor you would receive training and support to help you carry out your role including attending an induction session. Here you’d learn all about the Trust and get to meet members of the Trust Board, as well as other Governors.
As a Governor you wouldn’t get paid but you would be paid reasonable expenses which you incur whilst on Trust business.

Q. How do I become a Public Governor?Sarah, Tong
A. There are two things you need to do to become a Public Governor.
Firstly, if you’re not already, you must become a Trust member. Membership is free. You simply need to complete an application form online at www.bdct.nhs.uk/ft or call us on 01274 363552 and we will post a form to you to complete.
Then once our election process has started, you would need to complete and return a nomination form to become a Public Governor. Our members will elect the people who they want to be their Public Governor and represent their views.

“Put up or shut up” was the advice from Maureen Sharpe’s husband after she consistently moaned about being unhappy with her experiences at her local hospital. She decided to ‘put up’ and stand for election as a Public Governor at another local NHS provider (Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust!)

YourStory Sharing your
experiences.
I wanted to help make changes for the better at my local hospital. I was already a member at Bradford Teaching Hospitals Trust but felt there was more I could do to really make a difference so I stood for election and was voted to the Council of Governors in May 2005.
As a Public Governor I am involved in a number of working groups where I can influence development at the Trust and seek assurances over the business of the Trust.
One of the working groups I am part of is improving patient experience. As governors we attend ward visits and talk to patients, families, visitors, carers and staff to get an overall view of how people are experiencing their local hospital. In the working group we act as representatives for the
whole Council of Governors and pass back our findings to influence trust development and make improvements.
We do have statutory duties as governors. Including appointing the chairman and non-executive directors and approving the appointment of the chief executive. We’re also required to attend four Council of Governor meetings each year and receive and approve the annual report.
Most importantly as a Public Governor I represent the views of all Bradford South members and share with them information about key decisions that are made about Bradford Teaching Hospitals. We are the link between our members and the Trust. I don’t think people realise just how much influence they can have if they become members.

As a public governor I represent the views of all Bradford South members and share with them information about key decisions that are made about Bradford Teaching Hospitals.
My involvement is on a voluntary basis and the time commitment does vary but I like seeing the progress the hospital makes especially under the present difficult climate.
As a Public Governor I do enjoy being able to give something back to the NHS that has done so much for us as a family.
