hen it comes to camping, the basics—tent, sleeping bag, backpack, headlamp—never go out of style. But as more people escape
into the wilderness (the 2017 North American Camping Report estimates 3.4 million U.S. households have become new campers since 2014), new gear is entering the market and go-to products are being updated and improved.
“There are more people getting into the outdoor lifestyle,” says Jen Scanlon, camping buyer for Jax Inc. “It’s a national trend.” We asked Scanlon what gear we should consider adding to our gear closets this year.
Rooftop TentsRooftop tents—tents that pop-up on top of vehicles—are “the biggest trend right now,” Scanlon says. They’re easy to set up, comfortable (many include mattresses or other padding), and make it possible to camp almost anywhere.
Hammock Camping“This is a big trend that hasn’t slowed down,” Scanlon says. People are still buying hammocks
but now want all the accessories, too, such as tarps, insulating blankets, ultralight straps, and gear pockets. Scanlon says that Warbonnet Outdoors’ made-in-Colorado options are a good place to start.
Ultralight Gear
Weight is really only a factor when you’re back-packing, but no one’s going to complain that their
gear is too light—no matter the type of trip they’re planning. Which is why companies are starting to lighten their offerings across the board. Among Scanlon’s favorites is Steamboat Springs-based Big Agnes.
While the company is best-known for its high-quality tents, it has recently added a line of lightweight
Helinox camping furniture. “They really appeal to more of a mass market,” Scanlon says.
GlampingLuxury camping continues to have a strong fan club, and companies are following suit. You can now find everything from lanterns with

Bluetooth capabilities to string lights (check out BioLite’s SiteLight) to bedeck your campsite with to love seat-style camping chairs (Scanlon likes Kelty’s Low-Love Seat) to $500 coolers. “Glamping is not just for weekend trips with family campers at a campsite ; it can easily be for your more technical person going for an overnight,” Scanlon says.
Camping BlanketsDitch that worn-out, old comforter: Camping blankets are all the rage this year. Ranging in price from $20 to $200, and from straightforward blankets to ones with all the features (foot pockets, warmers, fun patterns), they add a level of comfort—and much-needed warmth—to the camping experience. Plus, it never hurts to have an extra layer stored in your car for emergencies. For the budget-conscious, Scanlon recommends Kelty’s insulated Bestie Blanket ($23).
Upgraded Sleeping PadsSleeping pads in 2018 are better insulated, lighter, and take up less room. “They used to be 1- or 2-inch thick,” Scanlon says. “We now can do 3- or 4-inch-thick sleeping pads, with one-third of the weight and one-third of the space.” The design has also been improved, so as you shift in your sleep, the new pads maintain a consistent foundation.
Automatic KnivesWith possession of gravity knives and switchblades being legalized by Colorado’s legislature in 2017, other states may follow, and sales should continue to rise, says Scanlon. Benchmade’s offerings are highly coveted and a great fit for outdoorists look-ing for an everyday carry, she says.
DALIAH SINGER is an award-winning writer and editor living and exploring in Colorado. In 2016, Folio honored Daliah as a 30 Under 30 (a “young journalist to watch”). In 2015, she edited “Everyday Environmentalists”, which won Colorado’s City and Regional Magazine Association award for Reader Service.
