2015 Back to School by Rev. Tom Laymon, SBM President/CEO, Sr. Pastor It was early Saturday morning August 15th - about 7:30am - when I walked out of the Mission’s front door to go one half block down the street toward the Riverfront parking lot of EDIS where staff and volunteers were be- ginning to set up for SBM’s 13th Annual Back-to-School Rally. There under the railroad trestle was a fam- ily, a mother with several children, waiting, wanting to make sure her children were able to receive back- packs and school supplies. We had seen folks gathering early previous years but this was by far the earliest. It wasn’t long before others joined her and the lines began to thicken and lengthen. We opened the proverbial gate at 10am as folks moved in to see a mountain situated at the far end of the parking lot. They moved in that direction but as the heat increased they found the shade of trees around the edges while they waited for the start, trying to stay cool, drinking the bottled water pro- vided by McDonalds and listen- ing to the Christian music. Then after everyone had en- tered from the street, I started by first welcoming and then I began climbing “Mt. Fear”. Flags of children’s fears were placed on the side of the moun- tain. These ranged from loud noises and animals (like mean dogs) to bullies, anger and guns. Together we climbed up and up Mt. Fear noting each way that all these children are confronted with fear and then sharing from the Bible that Je- sus casts out fear; Jesus is in con- trol because he created this world Continued on page 2 Listen to Rev. YOU helped make the 2015 Back-to-School Rally a great success!

Nearly 300 families attended SBM’s Annual Back-to-School Rally on Aug. 15th

Counselors prayed with parents and children who responded to the Gospel Message – 130 total.

Page 2: Your Prayerful Support Will Help Others YOU Can – …...2015 Back to School by Rev. Tom Laymon, SBM President/CEO, Sr. Pastor It was early Saturday morning August 15th - about 7:30am

It was 11am July 13th and everyone at the Mission were in a frenzy making sure the gym was ready, all the additional basketball hoops are set into place, the registration table was prepared with name badges, t-shirts and permission forms, and all the basketballs were pumped up and ready! Ready! – For what?

The dream of Rev. Tom and Janice Laymon to honor their son, Alazar, who went to be with Jesus, August of 2013 was coming to fruition in Alazar’s Bas-ketball Camp. One of Alazar’s favorite activities was to shoot the basketball, a skill he had acquired since coming from Ethiopia back in September 2012. So when their friend and brother in ministry Rev. New-ell Smith offered to bring his experience in facilitat-ing basketball camps for inner city kids in Philadel-phia to Sunday Breakfast Mission, it was just a matter of “when”. Then that “when” became the week of July 13th through 17th. Newell, a Church of the Naz-arene District Superintendent, loves to take a break from his administrative role to roll up his sleeves with three of his loves – basketball, kids, and Jesus.

So right around noon kids ages 8-11 began to ar-rive at SBM to start off a week of basketball basics, fun, games, discipline, prizes, lunch and Jesus. When street-ball met with organized-ball there was evidence of future shining stars.

Later in the week, during the daily devotional

break, Pastor Tom shared with the kids who Alazar was and how he would have loved the basketball camp (he was about 8 when he went to Jesus). All the kids sat in rapt attention, a real surprise to all the volunteers from churches, staff and one men’s program resident. As a result all of the sixteen boys

and girls heard how to ask Jesus into their hearts and live for him.

This camp proved to be a good beginning to an important effort to stop kids from using drugs or alcohol and instead encourage them to follow Jesus.

2015 Back to School continued from page 1and if we give ourselves to him he puts us in his care with his angels all around.

And then we planted his flag – Jesus’ flag – at the top, reigning over all of Mt. Fear! Everyone was invited to make Jesus their Savior from sin and Lord of their lives - 93 of the over 1,000 people (children and parents) prayed to receive Christ and then prayed with volunteers.

When everyone had re-gathered we started calling out registration numbers and all boys and girls received great backpacks. Many little girls walked out with prin-cesses or “Frozen” on their backs and little boys enjoyed “Cars” but some just enjoyed all the stuff inside, as did

the parents. Parent after parent thanked us for not just the “stuff” but the message which gave HOPE to their children.

Thanks Gideons for giving out New Testaments. Thank you M&T for underwriting the bulk of the sup-plies. Thank you volunteers who not only helped us during the event but also helped sort all the supplies and pack the packs. And thanks Karen, Laurie and Mike for helping to create “Mt. Fear”! But most of all - Thank You Lord Jesus for providing everything out of your abundance to reach little children! You still say, “Let the little children come unto me, for such is the Kingdom of Heaven.”

by Tonisha Gosa, SBM CounselorThis was the second consecutive year that Sunday

Breakfast Mission was thankful for a successful dental screening clinic which was conducted during the annual Back-to-School Rally event on August 15th. As I reflect on the day, I cannot help but remember approaching a young boy to ask him if he wanted to get his teeth checked. The boy looked at me and his Mother and said, “No, I don’t want to get my teeth checked. My teeth are fine!” I responded, “Well how about I go with you to look at the visual aids and get a tooth brush”. The young boy replied, “Ok, but I am not getting my teeth checked”. I agreed. After walking with the boy into the gym where the screening was taking place we went over to one of the dentists. I asked, “Can you talk to him about his teeth. The dentist agreed.

Immediately the dentist began talking to the young boy and before I knew it, the boy was in the

chair getting his teeth checked. After this young boy was done, I said, “Now let’s go get a nice toothbrush for you to take home. After a toothbrush and a high five I told him to enjoy his day.

As I proceeded to go back into the gym, the youngster came up behind me and said, “My brothers want to get their teeth checked”. My response - “Okay let’s go”. Needless to say, the young boy’s experience at the dental screening was so pleasant that he wanted his brothers to receive the same care.

In addition to the young boy’s family being

screened, there were a total of 130 children screened at SBM’s 2nd Back-to-School Dental Clinic by our volunteer dentists and hygienists. Dental screening volunteers included: Dr. Lewis Yu and Dr. Grace Liu along with their staff from All About Smiles; Linda Brennan-Jones a Social Worker from Christiana Care provided us with two dental residents, Dr. Patrick Whilby and Dr. Zachary Roach; Maggie Norris, Director of External Affairs at Westside Family Health arranged for her staff to offer education; and Nancy Brohawn, 2nd Vice President of Delaware Dental Hygienists Association, organized dental hygienists. Each volunteer dental professional did a wonderful job!

As I conclude, remember that because YOU care there were 130 children who received dental screening, because of YOUR commitment there are follow-ups being completed to make sure these children have healthy bright smiles for this upcoming school year.

Thank you dental professionals for making the BTS Clinic a

“A Start”, “A New Beginning” – that is what graduation means to the men and women at Sunday Breakfast Mission. It highlights the completion of many hours of classes and studies in “Finance Accountability”, “Boundaries”, “Biblical Living”, “Why Go to Work”, and several other courses centered around developing healthy lifestyles based on good biblical principles.

June 14th, 2015 11 men and 4 women celebrated the conclusion of SBM’s Discipleship Program with a graduation, baptism and blessing of two children. Family and friends were present, the Gospel message was preached, and great food was shared. To make the day twice as memorable Karen Brummitt dedicated her two children, Ethan and Megan to the Lord. As Rev. Laymon prayed over these two children, YOU participated in this ministry through YOUR partnership with SBM.

SBM thanks YOU for YOUR prayers, YOUR gifts, YOUR time and YOUR support to make this milestone meaningful and memorable to our residents as they move to the next phase in their lives. As YOU invest in SBM YOU are investing in changing the lives of men, women, and children right here in Wilmington, DE and beyond.

For well over 20 years Barbara and Steven Pettinella, owners of Decorat-ing Den Interiors, have been donors to Sunday Breakfast Mission. They have always appreciated the work of the Mis-sion and the important role it plays in the community.

One day they met Rev. Tom Lay-mon, who explained that the Mission had just received a donation of the Kensey Johns Jr. house in Historic New Castle. It was built in 1823 and completed in 1827. As they talked it was clear that the home needed to be prepared for sale with the dollars going back to the Mission. Those dol-lars would be used to support SBM’s work with homeless men, women and children.

As a result of that meeting a plan was hatched. The Pettinellas offered to mobilize the interior decorating community to fully decorate this re-markable house. “We have been in the business of decorating and preparing homes for sale for years and when this opportunity presented itself we just knew this was the right thing to do”, states Steven Pettinella.

Steven and Barbara have recruited 15 additional decorators to help pre-pare the home for a Gala fund-raising event that will be held on Friday, Sep-tember 25. This event will serve as the launch for tours that will be offered

starting September 26th and running through November 8th.

“This really is an extraordinary op-portunity for the Mission. Our whole basis of support is the private chari-table dollar and significant levels of

in-kind and volunteer support. This project has all of those qualities and is coming together at a very important time in our history with the increased demand in services”, states Rev. Tom Laymon.

For more information on the home, Gala, and a list of decorators involved, please visit www.historicoldnewcas-tledesignersshowcase.com or call Sun-day Breakfast Mission at 302-656-8542 ext 170.

When YOU give your vehicle to Sunday Breakfast Mission you give people HOPE. Gary, a recent graduate of our men’s discipleship program and a recipient of a donated car tells a story that is very similar to many other stories we hear every day. Gary says, “I came to Sunday Breakfast Mission about 18 months ago with no hope. I was physically and mental-ly broken.” Since graduating and going to work, Gary was able to purchase a car from SBM at an extremely discounted price which gives him hope for a brighter future. Gary goes on to say, “One of the blessings I received at SBM was a do-nation car. Because of this car I am able to go to work, I am able to visit family and I am able to drive myself and others to church on Sundays.”

YOU can give someone hope by donating your vehicle and it doesn’t matter the condition. We take vehicles in any condition. Since we work directly with needy people like Gary, the IRS allows the donor to write off the fair market value at the time of donation. Give us a call at 1-800-306- 4663 or visit www.sundaybreakfastmission.org to arrange a pick up. It is fast and easy!

Life is full of choices, including how we invest our money. Here are three choices we can make:

1. High risk investments.2. Safe but low yield investments.3. A guaranteed rate of return. Number three can be enjoyed with a Charitable Gift Annuity (CGA).

CGAs provide a secure and predictable income for your retirement, while blessing the ministries you care about like Sunday Breakfast Mission. CGAs offer other benefits too, including:

• A guaranteed rate of return that is 4-5 times greater than that of CDs. • An income stream that’s payable for life.• Tax deductions. Whether you fund a CGA using cash or appreciated

stock, you’re entitled to an income tax deduction for a portion of the amount you invest. Plus, gifts of appreciated stock can help you save on capital gains as well.

• The ability to impact lives for Christ through a legacy gift.Don’t let good choices be left on the cutting room floor. Instead, con-

sider how your choices – such as making a gift with a Charitable Gift Annuity - can bring about blessing for the Kingdom of God as expressed in 1 Samuel 12:24, “only fear the Lord and serve him faithfully with all your heart.”
