Babylon Town Supervisor Rich Schaffer and Department of Human Services Commissioner Madeline Quintyne-McConney hosted the Town’s 31st Annual Black History Month Celebration at Amityville Memorial High School.
Last year’s program was titled “Black Migrations,” and honored Joyce Adedugbe, Andrew Ayodeji, Dr. Lynn Elfe, Lystra Gaddy, Daniel Lloyd and Marie St. Clair. Jermaine Archer, Ph.D., Chair of American Studies in the Media and Communications Department of SUNY Old Westbury served as the Keynote Speaker. Andrea De Loney, Diversity and Inclusion Project Manager, was the Mistress of Ceremonies.
As always, the event featured great performances from local dance groups and bands, a cultural workshop and plenty of great vendors.

Renovated fields at Venetian Shores Park and Anthony Sanchez Memorial Park give athletes a premiere facility to play soccer, lacrosse and football. In 2020, we have even more great upgrades planned for our facilities, including brand new infields at the Tanner Park little league fields. Additionally, construction has begun on the Ocean Parkway Coastal Greenway Shared Use Path, which will give residents the ability to safely walk, run and bike between our ocean beach facilities.

Gilgo Beach Gets Annual Clean-Up
In honor of Global Youth Service Day, several children of North Babylon Youth Services group at the Phelps Lane North Babylon Youth Center presented “Art in the Park”. For several months, the children diligently worked on a project to give back to the community where they took five plain trash receptacles, beautifully painted them, and turned them into works of art. The youth also constructed an Information Board which will help inform the community about upcoming events.
Established in 1988, Global Youth Service Day is the largest youth service and civic action event in the world. GYSD celebrates and mobilizes the millions of young people who improve their communities through service. During the months of April, May and June, the Town of Babylon and NYS Assemblywoman Kimberly Jean-Pierre recognizes the youth who help their communities thrive by working together for the common good.

Babylon Welcomes Art in the Park!
The Long Island Beach Access Group (LIBAG), with the American Littoral Society held their 44th Annual Beach and Coastal Clean-Up Effort at Gilgo Beach. Volunteers of all ages also included Town of Babylon Beautification Ambassadors, the Junior Beautification Ambassadors and the Lindenhurst High School Robotics Club, all of whom helped collect 319 lbs. of debris off of the beach and marina, an improved result, down from 760 lbs. collected the previous year.
The Beautification Ambassadors and Junior Beautification Ambassadors are appointed volunteers who represent their respective hamlets in the Town of Babylon. Through organized interactive events and advocacy, they help residents in our communities gain an understanding of issues impacting our parklands, roadways, beaches and open spaces.
“Save Our Waves” Signs Displayed at Beaches
The Town of Babylon introduced a campaign to protect our beaches with a “Save Our Waves” Kickoff Ceremony. Children from various elementary schools in the Town of Babylon were recognized for helping to bring awareness to the importance of protecting our environment, in particular our beaches and waterways through their artwork.
The artwork was chosen from the Burt Koza Memorial Waterways Poster Contest sponsored by Winters Bros. at the Town of Babylon’s Earth Day celebration. To help educate the public about the negative impact of littering, the posters have been turned into original aluminum metal signs and are displayed at Tanner Park in Copiague, Venetian Shores Park in Lindenhurst and Overlook Beach in Babylon.
