Staff Recommendations
I have had the wonderful opportunity of being an Acquisitions Editor at Thorndike for the past fifteen years. I love hunting for that next sleeper bestseller that will be published six months out in the future, and acquiring it for our librarians and large print readers to enjoy. I have a couple of favorite sub-genres that I find the most enjoyable to personally read. I find narrative nonfiction titles that transport the reader to a particular place and time, and tell a compelling story while giving a social history lesson of the time (without it being like a history text) are a favorite. A title like THE BOYS IN THE BOAT would fall into this category. Another sub-genre I really enjoy are midlist mysteries that tend to have a strong sense of place and character development. Authors in this group include Archer Mayor (Vermont), Loren D. Estleman (Detroit), Bruce DeSilva (Providence, RI), Benjamin Black (Dublin, Ireland), Donna Leon (Venice, Italy), and Jane Haddam (Philadelphia) —— to name a few.
My wife and I have lived in the beautiful coastal town of Belfast for over thirty years. Besides reading (of course!) I enjoy working on our 140 year-old house, and gardening during our gorgeous summer months. We are blessed with two grandkids who we spend time with whenever possible.
Thorndike Press wouldn’t be the leading Large Print publisher if it weren’t for our staff. We are passionate about what we do — which is providing the best overall experience we can for our customers and readers. Additionally, at Thorndike Press we put the “V” in voracious when it comes to reading and loving books!
Over the coming months, meet our staff and find out what we are reading and recommending! Enjoy and HAPPY READING!

CRAZY MOUNTAIN KISSby Keith McCafferty (October Mystery) Crazy Mountain Kiss is set deep in the mountains of Montana. When a member of the Madison River Liars and Fly Tiers Club finds a Santa hat in the fireplace of his rented cabin, and then a body stuffed in the flue, fishing guide and part-time private investigator Sean Stranahan
and his off-again, on-again lady friend Sherriff Martha Ettinger are on the case. McCafferty delivers a carefully plotted western procedural with interesting characters and relationships; a strong sense of its Madison Valley, Montana, setting; and fly fishing for readers who like to wet a line. Fans of Craig Johnson and C. J. Box will go for this title.
page 14
I have two strong midlist mystery titles to recommend for October. Both are regional mysteries with a likeable and strongly developed protagonist.
Both of these titles have a very strong and authentic sense of place, in both the characters and the settings. Likeable protagonists and tight plots will certainly make for enjoyable reads for mystery lovers. Believe me — neither will disappoint!

THE COMPANY SHE KEPTby Archer Mayor (October Crime Scene) SMLML
One snowy morning, Joe Gunther and his Vermont Bureau of Investigation team are brought in when the body of a state senator is found strung up above the interstate with the word “dyke” carved in her chest. Talk about authentic; when he’s not writing this New York Times
bestselling series, Mayor serves as state medical examiner and an investigator for the sheriff’s department in Vermont.

MEET OUR NEW PEER PICKS SELECTOR . . .
Tammy NiblettTammy Niblett is a Librarian in the Acquisitions Department of the Los Angeles Public Library. We’re excited to have Tammy as our next selector for Peer Picks.
Join us during the next three months to follow Tammy’s picks and read about her views on large print, collection development and other best practices.
Large Print Books Are Awesome Large print is a wonderful resource for individuals who have difficulty reading small print. But I think we need to step out of the box that the only customers for large print are elderly women who like cozy mysteries and elderly men who like westerns. We should be looking at the Teen and Juvenile reader who may need a larger print to read that Harry Potter book
or the Suzanne Collins title. We also need to realize that large print is not just for people with vision impairments. I think many a librarian might be surprised to realize how many people are checking out the large print version of a popular title like Gone Girl or 50 Shades of Grey because the wait list is shorter than the regular print. When purchasing large print books I think libraries need to focus on what will be popular with all of their customers not just a certain age group. Make sure to display that book in your popular materials displays. Don’t hide it on the shelves. You might be surprised by the number of large print converts you get.
More about Tammy Tammy Niblett has been working in libraries since she was 18 years old. She started her career as the book shelver/clerk/librarian at the Social Work library at the Ohio State University and has never looked back. She is currently a Librarian working in the Acquisitions Department at the IMLS award-winning Los Angeles Public Library.

Tammy says: This book about a woman’s decision to train a deadly goshawk after the sudden death of her father has appeal for adults of all ages. This book is for the nonfiction reader who enjoys books like Cheryl Strayed’s Wild or Elizabeth Gilbert’s Eat, Pray, Love; books about people having a major life transition and how they coped with it. I would also recommend this title for your literary fiction readers looking to delve into nonfiction.
