Your Task
Today you are going to write an informal letter in
character using what you learnt and planned yesterday.
Don’t forget to:
• Think carefully before you begin writing
• After each sentence re-read you work to make sure it
is clear and says what you mean it to
• Imagine you are that person and write from their
perspective – include imagined thoughts and feelings
The next slides will explain how you are to set out your
informal letter.

14th September 1914My dearest Susan,
I am sorry for not writing sooner but we have been so busy during the first few weeks of our expedition. I have been meaning to write to you every day but the exhaustion I feel overwhelms me. My day-to-day tasks are so physically demanding that whenever I get a minute to myself I collapse into the deepest sleep I have ever experienced. What I wouldn’t give to be in my own bed! On the ship, my duties include: scrubbing the deck, hoisting the sails and stoking the engines.
How is everything at home? Are the children behaving themselves? I shouldn’t like them to have to work on a ship like me; please make sure they do well in their studies. Stephen’s an intelligent boy but his reading and writing need to improve. Also, make sure Sarah concentrates at school because she has always been a daydreamer.
At night, when I’m on my own, I dream of walking along the quiet, pristine beach with Bobby running in and out of the sea. However, I must not tell the other crew members of my hopes and dreams as I fear they would mock me terribly. They are a hard bunch of men who can be cruel but I suppose you would have to be with all we have to put up with. The colossal wooden ship with billowing sails is a sight to see gliding through the turbulent ocean. We have reached Antarctica, which is as far south as anyone has ever been, the temperature is breathtakingly cold.
The captain (who is called Ernest Shackleton) is a bad-tempered and serious man. He likes everyone to be pulling their weight. Frank Wild – who is second in command –is fortunately a nicer man. He cares deeply about the well-being of his crew.
I hope to write again soon but I cannot guarantee when it will be. The next part of this long-distance trip is going to be on the bitter, frozen land.
Give my love to the children and know you are all in my thoughts,
John
