WHAT THIS INDEX PROVIDESThis index provides a listing, organized by geographic area, of serial publications of the Mines and Minerals Division and its predecessor organizations. The publications repre sent over 100 years of geoscience investigations, from 1891 to the end of 1993. Only publications that pertain to specific geographic areas are included in this index.

Publications are indexed by geographic areas which in clude: National Topographic System (NTS) areas, geo graphic townships, and Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR) 'areas'. Publications are listed under the main geo graphic areas where they are located. Publications are in cluded under a geographic area where at least 209& of the publication area overlaps the geographic area or covers at least 209& of the geographic area. For more detailed in formation on geographic location, users should refer to the 4 sets of index maps published recently. The index maps show the geographic location and brief information for all pub lished maps from 1891 to 1991.

This index is intended to be used in conjunction with Index to Published Reports and Maps (MP177), which pro vides a complete listing of all publications from 1891 to 1992. Publications issued in 1993 are listed in the 1993 sup plement to MP177, included herein as an appendix.

Each index includes publications within a specific range of map scales (see below) so that publications are in dexed by geographic areas of roughly the same size as the map or report area.

Index by NTS AreaThe National Topographic System (NTS) in Ontario is illus trated in Figure l.

    1:1 000 000 NTS AreaEach 1:1 000 000 NTS area (e.g. 52) spans 40 latitude and 80 longitude.

Publications included in this index are maps and re ports with map scales smaller (less detailed) than l :250 000.

    1:250 000 NTS AreaEach l :250 000 NTS area (e.g. 52G) spans l 0 latitude and T longitude.

Publications included in this index are maps and re ports with map scales smaller than 1:50 000 and larger (more detailed) than or equal to l :250 000.

    1:50 000 NTS AreaEach l :50 000 NTS area (e.g. 52G/3) spans 15' latitude and 30' longitude.

Publications included in this index are maps and re ports with map scales larger than or equal to 1:50 000.

Index by TownshipTownships included in this index are geographic townships recognized by the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resouces. A number of townships have been divided into north and south or east and west parts by Energy, Mines and Resources Can ada, but these divisions are not included here.

Publications included in this index are maps and re ports with map scales larger than l :50 000.

Index by MNR AreaIn areas of Ontario that have not been surveyed into town ships, the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources uses 'areas' for the administration of land. Each area corre sponds to 1/4 of a l :50 000 NTS area. The areas also corre spond to mining claim maps of the Ontario Ministry of Northern Development and Mines, showing the disposition of Crown Mining Lands.

Publications included in this index are maps and re ports with map scales larger than l :50 000.

Publications Not Included in this IndexThe following types of reports and maps are not included in this index:* Non-serial publications.* Maps or reports covering the entire Province.* Publications of a general nature, or not pertaining to a

specific geographic area.* Compendia and articles within compendia.* Maps of geophysical flight lines.

For Other Information about Published Reports and MapsThe Publications Price List provides prices and current list ings of reports and maps in print.

The Index to Published Reports and Maps (MP177) contains a comprehensive listing of all publications of the Mines and Minerals Division from 1891 to 1992.

The Index to Maps consists of maps, mostly at l: l 000 000 scale, showing the locations of published maps. Four sets of index maps have been issued: Bedrock Geology, Surficial Geology, Geophysical Surveys, and Geochemical Surveys. The maps have the same scale, map projection, and sheet size as the 7997 Geology of Ontario series of maps.

The General Index to Reports, in 9 volumes covering the years 1891-1980, provide a comprehensive subject in dex to reports. Volumes l to 7 are out of print and therefore only available in libraries.

SOURCES OF INFORMATIONThe locations of all maps published from 1891 to 1993, with the exception of about 200 that are vertical sections, maps of

underground workings, geochemical broadsheets, etc., were obtained from geographic outlines stored in the Minis try's Publications Data Base.

The locations of reports with accompanying maps, published from 1891 to 1993, were obtained from the Publi cations Data Base by using the locations of the correspond ing maps.

The locations of reports, without accompanying maps and published since 1987, were obtained from geographic outlines stored in the Publications Data Base.

The locations of reports, without accompanying maps and published from 1891 to 1987, were obtained from list ings in the Ministry's version of the Geoscan Data Base, RepOft SGHGS which was previously used to generate MP77 and it supple ments. The locations of the approximately 200 maps not taken from the Publications Data Base were also obtained from Geoscan. The information from this data base was not verified during the present project.

The procedures for generating the geographic index are described below under "Methodology".

Maps, Open File Map (OFM) Series: Open File Maps are intended for rapid release and are issued without editing. They are usually superseded by a formal publication.

Maps, P Series: Preliminary maps with their descriptive notes, show the preliminary results obtained after each field season for each of the areas surveyed. Most are uncoloured. The series was started in 1956.

Maps, S Series: this discontinued series of maps shows sur ficial geology and was produced by the Ontario Department of Lands and Forests in 1965. There are only 4 maps in this series.

Aggregate Resources Inventory Papers (ARIP): the ARIP series reports on the nature and extent of aggregate re sources within specific areas. The reports include (unnum bered) maps illustrating areas of potential for aggregate ex-

PUBLICATION SERIES INCLUDED IN THIS INDEX

Map SeriesMaps, 1900 Series: this discontinued series was replaced by the 2000 series in 1960. First issued in 1931, the maps showed information on a provincial or regional scale. Later the 1900 series included all geological maps and replaced the "AR" series of maps which accompanied Annual Re ports.

Maps, 2000 Series: the current series of coloured geologi cal maps presents the final results of the geological inves tigation of specific areas. Most are accompanied by a final published report. This series replaced the 1900 series.

Maps, 5000 Series: the current series of coloured, engi neering geology maps usually accompany NOEGTS re ports.

Maps, 80 000 Series: the current series of geophysical and geochemical maps has been produced since 1979. Earlier geophysical and geochemical maps were issued in the A, 2000, or P series.

Maps, A Series: this discontinued series of maps, recording magnetic surveys by Ontario Department of Mines, was is sued during the period 1950-1959.

Maps, Annual Report Series: the discontinued "AR" se ries, accompanying the Annual Reports of the Ontario Bu reau of Mines and Ontario Department of Mines, was issued during the period 1891 -1944. The maps cover all geological investigations during that time, but the majority show the re sults of geologic surveys of specific areas. The series was replaced by the 1900 series.

    traction.

Annual Reports: this discontinued series reported on all in vestigations of the Ontario Bureau of Mines and Ontario Department of Mines from 1891 to 1960. From 1961 to 1972, the annual reports contained statistical reviews of mining in Ontario.

Geophysical Reports: this discontinued series consists of only 2 reports, issued in 1973-1974. The reports contain the results of geophysical investigations of specific areas.

Geoscience Data Inventory Folios (including Geological Data Inventory Folios) (GDIF): this series, initiated in 1982, summarizes all exploration data for specific town ships or NTS areas. Each folio consists of tabulated data and one or more maps. The series replaces the Data Series (P) maps.

Guidebooks (including Geological Guidebooks): Guide books are informative and colourful guides to the geology, physiography, and scenery of specific areas of the Province.

Industrial Mineral Reports (IMR): the discontinued IMR series presented the results of investigations of the geology and uses of industrial minerals. The series was issued during the period 1953-1975.

Mineral Deposits Circulars (including Mineral Re sources Circulars) (MDC): the MDC series covers inven tories and geological studies of specific types of mineral de posits, commodities, or resources, mainly on an Ontario- wide or regional basis.

Miscellaneous Papers (MP): the MP series provide timely information on a variety of geoscience topics. Annual com pendia, such as the Summary of Field Work and Other Acti vities, are published in this series. The reports are rarely ac companied by maps.

Northern Ontario Engineering Geology Terrain Studies (NOEGTS): NOEGTS reports include detailed descrip tions of engineering geology and terrain studies of a specific area. Each report is accompanied by one or two coloured maps.

  • GEOGRAPHIC INDEX TO PUBLISHED REPORTS AND MAPS

Open File Reports (OFR): the OFR series provides the means for rapid release of information soon after project completion. These unedited reports are available for ex amination at the Mines and Minerals Information Centres (Sudbury and Toronto) and at the appropriate Resident Geologists's office. Copies are photocopied on demand at the client's expense.

Preliminary Reports (PR): the discontinued PR series was issued from 1928 to 1966 and presented preliminary results of geological investigations. The series was superseded by the MP and OFR series.

Reports (including Geological Reports, Geoscience Re ports) (GR): Reports generally cover the detailed geology of specific areas, always include a coloured map, and are based on the results of 1-3 years of field investigation. The series, started in 1960, continues the theme of the former Annual Report series.

Special Volumes: Special Volumes are comprehensive compilations of major topics of broad interest to the geosci ence community. The series started in 1984. The most recent volume was the Geology of Ontario issued to commemorate the centennial of the founding of the Ontario Bureau of Mines.

Studies (including Geoscience Studies, Geological Cir culars): the series reports on new information or concepts of scientific merit not covered by other series. The content varies but mainly covers larger areas than covered by the re port series or discusses a specific subject.

Abbreviated title: short or paraphrased title of the publica tion.

METHODOLOGYIndex information for all published reports and maps of the Mines and Minerals Division is stored in a Publications Data Base. The data base also contains the geographic out lines of all maps. The geographic locations of maps were published previously in the Index to Maps series. The Publi cations Data Base will be incorporated with the Ministry's ERLIS system and distributed in digital form in the future.

The geographic index was generated by spatial tests that determine if publication areas intersect townships, MNR areas or NTS areas. For each range of map scales within each publication series, a set of polygons, lines, and points representing the map areas was tested against sets of

polygons representing townships, MNR areas, and 3 sets of NTS areas.

The polygons, lines, and points representing the geo graphic extent of publications were taken from the Publica tions Data Base, created during previous projects to pro duce the Index to Published Reports and Maps and Index to Maps. The polygons representing townships and MNR areas were generated during the Ministry's AFRI project and were obtained from the Mines and Minerals Informa tion Centre. The polygons representing NTS areas were generated by a utility program created by PDM Information Technology Inc.

The spatial intersection tests were done with TM/CAR- TO , proprietary software of PDM Information Technolo gy Inc., running within AutoCAD and linked to Em press RDBMS. Each test compared two spatial data bases, one containing publications and one containing townships or MNR areas or NTS areas. The sets of publication data were first assembled with SQL in Empress.

The results of the spatial intersection tests were stored in the Publications Data Base. To produce the present publi cation, the results were retrieved from the data base using SQL scripts, and then converted to Interleaf Publishing Sys tem with UMX scripts.

Spatial tests were run on all maps (l 891 to end of 1993) and on reports without accompanying maps from 1987 to end of 1993. For reports with accompanying maps, the re sults were take from spatial tests of the maps. For reports without accompanying maps from 1891 to 1987, the geo graphic index was taken from the Ministry's version of the Geoscan Data Base (published in earlier versions of Index to Published Reports and Maps).

The spatial testing and production of this publication were done by PDM Information Technology Inc. under con tract to the Publication Services Section, Client Services Branch, Ontario Ministry of Northern Development and Mines.
