IntroductionTheYourAdChoicesIconandassociatedAdMarkeristhevisualrepresentationofalinkpresentedtouserstolearnmoreabouttheadtheyarecurrentlyviewing.ConsistentandproperusageoftheYourAdChoicesIconandAdMarkerwillreinforcetheapplicationofconsumer-friendlystandardsforInterest-BasedAdvertising(IBA)acrosstheInternet.
TheYourAdChoicesIcon&AdMarkerCreativeGuidelinescoveraproposedcreativespecificationsstandard;however,thisremainsaniterativeprocessdesignedtoincludefeedbackfromtheonlineadvertisingindustry.
IABNewAdPortfolioTheIABNewAdPortfolioreplacesallthepreviouscreativedisplayguidelinesformobileanddesktopincludingtheUniversalAdPackage(UAP),richmediaunits,andotheradunits’relatedguidance.TheIABissuedaTransitionGuideinJuly2017andasofJanuary2018,theadunitsintransition(forexample,“RisingStars”)havebeendelisted.
Theportfolio’snewHTML5adunitsarebasedonaspectratioandsizerangeratherthanfixedpixelsizesandincorporatestheLEANPrinciplesoflightweight,encrypted,AdChoices-supported,andnon-invasiveadvertisingwithinallmobile,display,andnativeadformats.Flexible-sizedadunitsallowforaddeliveryacrossmultiplescreensizesandintegrationwithresponsivewebsitedesign.Thecreativedesigncanscaletodifferentscreensizes.
TheYourAdChoicesIcon&AdMarkersizingandplacementpixel-basedspecificationsintheseguidelinesshouldbemaintainedwhentheadisscalingtodifferentscreensizes.

AdMarkerSizes&DimensionsToensurelegibilityoftheAdMarker,aminimumsizehasbeendeterminedregardlessoftheaspectratioofthetotaladsize.TheYourAdChoicesIconcannotbelessthan12pixelsby12pixels(12x12).Theminimumfontsizeis10pixels.TheAdMarkertextshouldbeplaced2pixelstotheleftoftheYourAdChoicesIconandcenteredvertically.

WhentheAdMarkerisplacedinsidethead,thedefaultchoiceshouldbetheupperrighthandcorner.However,ifthisplacementcausesvisualorfunctionalinterferencewiththeunderlyingcreative,thenitcanbeplacedinanyofthefourcornersoftheadatthediscretionofthepartyservingnotice.ThereshouldbenospacebetweentheAdMarkerandtheadcorner.Page-LevelNotificationForuseoftheAdMarkerinpageorapplicationlevelnotification,therecommendedpositionisinthefooter.Allcreativespecificationsaboveapplyexceptforthosegoverningcolorandfontoftheapprovedtext.Inthiscase,theapprovedtextcanbeallowedtoinheritthefontcharacteristicsoftheexistingfooterelements.

Addendum:ImplementationRecommendationforAdMarkerCollisionPreventionTheinitialphaseoftheAdMarkercreativeguidelinesdoesnotyetincludeacommunicationmechanism(suchasmetadata)betweenmultipleadmarkerservingentities.Asaresult,itispossibleinsomeinstancesthatanAdMarkercouldbeservedmorethanonceinsidethesamead,resultingina“collision”—multipleadmarkersservedontopofeachotherorindifferentcornersofthead.Thiscouldnegativelyaffectboththeadcreativeandtheconsumerexperience.Tohelpavoidthisscenario,atechnicalworkinggroupsupportingtheYourAdChoicesself-regulatoryprogramhasproposedanimplementationrecommendationfordeployment.ThisimplementationrecommendationaddressesallthevariableelementsofthecurrentYourAdChoicesIcon&AdMarkerCreativeGuidelines.Suchauniformapproachhelpsensurethatalladmarkersservedwouldoverlayexactlyontopofeachother,therebyavoidingany“collision”scenarios.Whilenotmandatory,useoftheimplementationisstronglyrecommendedforallentitiesdeployingtheYourAdChoicesIcon&AdMarkerbeginningandafter2011.Fortheconvenienceofprogramparticipants,theDAAwillmakeavailabletheassetsthatmeetthesecriteria.Towhomdoesthisinformationapply?•Allentitiesengagedinservingnoticeinsideanad.•Agenciesresponsibleforthedevelopmentofadcreative.Creativeagenciescanusethefollowingspecificationsforplacingelementsthatareimportantforbrandrecognitionand/oradfunctionality.
