have up to 10 years from graduation to access the scholarship. In the 2012-13 academic year, stu-dents across the Saskatchewan post-secondary sector benefitted from the program. The percentage breakdown by institution is:University of Saskatchewan: 44 per centUniversity of Regina: 30 per centSIAST: 13 per centRegional Colleges: eight per centPrivate Vocational Schools: five per centMorgan reminds parents and stu-dents that they do not need to ap-ply for the Saskatchewan Advantage Scholarship.“Your post-secondary educational institution will apply on the student’s behalf and eligible students will have their tuition reduced by the scholar-ship amount,” Morgan said.Updated information on the scholar-ship is posted on the Ministry of Ad-vanced Education’s website at www.aeei.gov.sk.ca/scholarship-sas.Morgan noted that while the Sas-katchewan Advantage Scholarship is reducing tuition fees for students, those same students can also get all

of their tuition back, up to $20,000, if they stay and work in Saskatchewan after they finish their post secondary education.“Close to $52 million in Graduate Retention Program benefits were provided to 50,000 graduates for the 2012 taxation year,” Morgan said. “This means more young people are choosing to live and work in Sas-katchewan after finishing their edu-cation and that’s one of the reasons our province is growing at its fastest pace in decades.”

On this day in 1920, seven men, including legendary all-around athlete and football star Jim Thorpe, meet to organize a professional football league at the Jordan and Hupmobile Auto Showroom in Can-ton, Ohio. The meeting led to the creation of the American Professional Football Conference (APFC), the forerunner to the hugely successful National Football League. Professional football developed in the 1890s in Pennsylvania, as local athletic clubs engaged in increasingly intense competition. Former Yale football star William “Pudge” Heffelfinger became the first-ever pro-fessional football player when he was hired by the Allegheny Athletic Association to play in a game against their rival the Pittsburgh Athletic Club in November 1892. By 1896, the Allegheny Athletic Association was made up entirely of paid players, making it the sport’s first-ever professional team. As football became more and more popular, local semi-pro and pro teams were organized across the country. Professional football first proved itself a viable spectator sport in the 1910s with the establishment of The Ohio League. Canton, the premiere team in the league, featured legendary decathlete and football star Jim Thorpe. From his play with the Carlisle School to his gold medal in the decathlon in Stockholm in 1912 and his time in the outfield with John McGraw’s New York Giants, Thorpe was an international star who brought legitimacy to professional football. The crowds that Thorpe and the Canton team drew created a market for professional football in Ohio and beyond. Still, the league was struggling due to escalating player salaries, a reliance on college players who then had to forfeit their college eligibility and a general lack of organization. On August 20, 1920, the owners of four Ohio League teams--the Akron Pros, Canton Bulldogs, Cleveland Indians and Dayton Trian-gles--met to form a new professional league. Jim Thorpe was nominat-ed as president of the new league, as it was hoped Thorpe’s fame would help the league to be taken seriously. On September 17, the league met again, changing its short-lived name to the American Professional Football Association (APFA) and officially electing Jim Thorpe as the league’s first president. The APFA began play on September 26, with the Rock Island Inde-pendents of Illinois defeating a team from outside the league, the St. Paul Ideals, 48-0. A week later, Dayton beat Columbus 14-0 in the first game between two teams from the APFA, the forerunner of the modern NFL.

SAFETY UP! - ON HARVEST SAFETY

Harvest is hectic. Racing daylight and rain clouds can be seriously stressful. Time means money when yields are at risk. As a result, harvest is the peak season for agriculture-related injuries and fatalities.

When you’re in a rush, it’s tempting to bypass simple safety procedures that might slow you down. But taking the extra time can be a lifesaver. So ease up. Take responsibility for your own safety. Get trained for each new task before you get started. Be alert for hazards and figure out how to manage them – remove any unnecessary risks ahead of time, and learn to manage the risks that can’t be removed. Know the job. Know the hazards. Know the drill.

Cover Your . . . Know the job. Combines and balers can be extremely dangerous. Knowledge is your best defense. Prepare for the harvest season by getting properly trained for each task you will perform. Get the equipment ready. The majority of severe farm tragedies involve machinery. Make sure yours is in good working condition. Be sure pre-season maintenance and repairs are handled several weeks before harvest. Also make sure you are in good condition. You take pride in your ability to work long and hard. You’re happy to burn the midnight oil in pursuit of a goal – in this case, a successful harvest. The reality is that fatigue, drowsiness and illness contribute to field mishaps. To ensure you’ll be around to see the last of the grain go into the bin, get plenty of sleep. Take regular breaks. Wear comfortable, close-fitting clothing and sturdy, protective shoes. When you do field work, always let someone know where you areand check in regularly.

Little Person Alert Keep children safely away from farm machinery, including grain transportation equipment. Tragedies occur far too easily when children end up in the path of equipment from which the operator’s view is restricted.

Big, Mean Harvesting Machines Know the hazards. Harvesting equipment is designed to cut, pull and separate things, and it does so very effec-tively. Unfortunately, it won’t discriminate between you and the crop. Get caught in its clutches and you could be tangled, wrapped, pulled, run over, cut up or worse. Learn about the dangers ahead of time so you can avoid them while you’re in the field. When you’re working, slow down and think about the potential hazards of each new task before you begin.

How Quick are You? At 1000 RPM, a PTO shaft will entangle at four metres per second. An average measured reaction time on an adult male is about .2 seconds. So by the time you react to the pull of the PTO, it has already pulled you or your clothing almost a metre. Guards anyone?

Avoid Harvesting Hazards Know the drill. Knowing how to identify hazards is only the first step. Once you identify them, you have to learn to manage them safely or avoid them altogether. Stop and think about possible hazards while you’re operating the equipment. Be alert. Ask questions. Here are a few serious harvesting hazards to avoid.- Avoid entanglement. Every combine or baler gets a plugged intake area occasionally. This area is also known as a pull-in point, and it can grab you in an instant. To avoid entanglement: • Operate the equipment with care and attention. • Ensure all protective guards and shields are securely in place. • Clear plugged equipment only after the power is turned off and the key is in your pocket. • Don’t overestimate your ability to react – entanglement injuries happen very quickly. • Decrease the incidence of plugged machines through regular maintenance, late-season weed control, and by operating during optimal conditions. • In wet field conditions, wait a few hours or an extra day, if possible, to reduce plugging. • If you must harvest in marginal conditions, expect crops to plug the equipment and allow extra time to unplug it.- Don’t slip up. Most people recognize the entanglement hazard. Few realize that many more injuries are related to slips and falls around farm machines. During an average workday, you might have to mount and dismount from the combine dozens of times. The top of an average combine is 12 to 14 feet high. The operator’s platform is usually 6 to 8 feet high. Falls from these heights can cause serious injuries. If you are fatigued or careless, the likelihood of a fall dramatically increases. Then there’s the slip factor. Ladders and platforms are often painted metal. They’re slippery in normal conditions – treacherous when wet, muddy, icy or coated in crop residue.

To prevent painful falls:• Keep platforms free of tools or other objects.• Clean ladders, steps and platforms regularly.• Wear well-fitting, comfortable shoes with non slip soles.• Use the grab bars when mounting or dismounting. • Find a stable position from which to refuel or perform maintenance.• Use three points of contact when getting in or out of machinery – one hand/two feet or two hands/ one foot.• Don’t underestimate the impact of fatigue, stress, drugs, alcohol, or age on your stability.

The Last Word

Harvest is a productive time. The pressure may be exhilarating, but it also creates serious stress. This can only mean one thing: an increased risk of injury. To prevent injury and reap the benefits of the harvest you’re working so hard at, take responsibility for your own safety. Injuries happen when you take shortcuts in performing routine tasks, work while mentally or physically fatigued, or fail to follow safety guidelines. Slow down and follow safe practices. Know the job. Know the hazards. Know the drill.

FRIENDSNick and Lou head out for a quick round of

golf. Since they are short on time, they decide to play only 9 holes.

Nick says to Lou, “Let’s say we make the time worth the while, at least for one of us, and

spot $5 on the lowest score for the day.”

Lou agrees and they enjoy a great game. After the 8th hole, Lou is ahead by 1 stroke, but

cuts his ball into the rough on the 9th.

“Help me find my ball; you look over there,” he says to Nick.

After 5 minutes, neither has had any luck, and since a lost ball carries a two-stroke

penalty, Lou pulls a ball from his pocket and tosses it to the ground.

“I’ve found my ball!” he announces trium-phantly.

Nick looks at him forlornly, “After all the years we’ve been friends, you’d cheat me on

golf for a measly five bucks?”

“What do you mean cheat? I found my ball sitting right here!”

“And a liar, too!” Nick says with amazement.

“I’ll have you know I’ve been standing on your ball for the last five minutes!”
