I encourage all parents and caregivers to sit down with their kids and discuss the issue of fire safety and to develop a plan on what to do when an emergency strikes.”

NO NEW COMMUNITIES REPORT DUTCH ELM DISEASE, 2013 SURVEY SHOWS
gov.ca -A 2013 Dutch elm disease (DED) survey conducted by the Ministry of Environment and participating com-munities shows the elm tree-killing fun-gus remains established in its traditional area – southeast Saskatchewan – but has not spread to any new areas in the prov-ince. Though the number of diseased trees is up from 2012, the increase is attributable to more communities sur-veying for DED.
“It’s encouraging to see Saskatchewan communities working to protect the health of their urban forests,” Environment Minister Ken Cheveldayoff said. “Finding and removing DED-infected trees helps limit tree losses in our communities by preventing the dis-ease from spreading to healthy elms. This keeps our streets greener, and reduces tree removal and replanting costs over the long term.”
Communities are responsible for their own surveys and for submitting samples to the Provincial Crop Protection Laboratory. A positive test result for DED means the infected tree should be removed and either buried or burned. Municipalities can designate their own disposal methods and locations.
The Ministry of Environment surveys seven management zones for DED: Estevan, Regina, Moose Jaw, Tisdale,
Balcarres, Indian Head and Wolseley. A total of 214 trees in these zones were marked this year for removal, up from 162 last year. The ministry removes these marked trees during the fall and winter.
To help protect trees and communities from Dutch elm disease:
Do not prune elm trees from April 1 to August 31, when the risk of spreading DED is greatest.
Maintain trees to help ensure good health and greater resistance to diseases, including DED.
Be sure the person hired to prune elms has completed a recognized training course.
Do not transport or store elm firewood. Dispose elm wood promptly at a loca-tion specified by the local municipal authority.
Be sure to comply with all provincial regulations concerning the pruning of elm trees.

THIS DAY IN HISTORY1958: First Pacemaker Implanted in Human
Swedish doctor Ake Senning has successfully implanted the first pacemaker in a human. The device is based on technology pioneered by Canadian electrical engineer Dr. John A. Hopps. In 1949 Hopps conducted experi-ments with medical colleagues Dr. W.G. Bigelow and Dr. J.C. Callaghan at the Banting and Best Institute in To-ronto. Their discovery of a method to restart a heart that had stopped beating led Hopps to develop the first pace-maker at the National Research Council in 1950. • In 1999, National Engineering Week honoured the pacemaker as one of the five most significant Canadian engineering accomplish-ments of the 20th century.• The other four winners were the Confederation Bridge, the Can-adarm, the Transcontinental Railway Rogers Pass project and the IMAX system of motion picture photography and projection.• The pacemaker was the first electronic device to be implanted in a human body. • Hopps, known as the “father of Canadian biomedical engineer-ing,” was instrumental in establishing the profession in Canada. He was the founder and first president of the Canadian Medical and Biological Engineering Society in 1965.• Hopps himself received a pacemaker in 1984. It lasted for 13 years before he informed his doctors that the signal was getting weak and it required a new battery. Hopps died in 1998. • The Hopps pacemaker was a “desk top” model and was the size of a small radio. Technical advances, specifically the invention of transistors, allowed subsequent inventors to build smaller models.• American engineer Wilson Greatbatch de-veloped an implantable pacemaker in 1958. Greatbatch holds the patent for the pacemak-er. • The 1958 surgery, performed in Stockholm by Dr. Ake Senning, changed the life of re-cipient Arne Larsson, a 43-year-old suffering from a severe heart condition. He lived an active life for another 43 years and received a total of 26 pacemakers during that time.• The pacemaker implanted in Larsson by Dr. Senning was built by Swedish engineer Rune Elmqvist.

ABOUT FIRE PREVENTION WEEK
Fire Prevention Week was established to commemorate the Great Chicago Fire, the tragic 1871 conflagration that killed more than 250 people, left 100,000 homeless, destroyed more than 17,400 structures and burned more than 2,000 acres. The fire began on October 8, but continued into and did most of its damage on October 9, 1871.
Commemorating a conflagrationAccording to popular legend, the fire broke out after a cow - belonging to Mrs. Catherine O’Leary - kicked over a lamp, setting first the barn, then the whole city on fire. Chances are you’ve heard some version of this story yourself; people have been blaming the Great Chicago Fire on the cow and Mrs. O’Leary, for more than 130 years. But recent research by Chicago historian Robert Cromie has helped to debunk this version of events.
The ‘Moo’ myth Like any good story, the ‘case of the cow’ has some truth to it. The great fire almost certainly started near the barn where Mrs. O’Leary kept her five milking cows. But there is no proof that O’Leary was in the barn when the fire broke out - or that a jumpy cow sparked the blaze. Mrs. O’Leary herself swore that she’d been in bed early that night, and that the cows were also tucked in for the evening. But if a cow wasn’t to blame for the huge fire, what was? Over the years, journalists and historians have offered plenty of theories. Some blamed the blaze on a couple of neighbor-hood boys who were near the barn sneaking cigarettes. Others believed that a neighbor of the O’Leary’s may have started the fire. Some people have speculated that a fiery meteorite may have fallen to earth on October 8, starting several fires that day - in Michigan and Wisconsin, as well as in Chicago.
HOME FIRES• In 2011, U.S. fire departments responded to 370,000 home structure fires. These fires caused 13,910 civilian injuries, 2,520 civilian deaths, $6.9 billion in direct damage.• On average, seven people die in U.S. home fires per day.• Cooking is the leading cause home fires and home fire injuries, followed heating equipment. Smoking is a leading cause of civilian home fire deaths.• Most fatal fires kill one or two people. In 2011, 12 home fires killed five or more people resulting in a total of 67 deaths.
