In 2012, 55% of skilled-trade workers in the U.S. were 45 years and older, and 18.6% were over 55 years old.

Contrast those numbers with the overall labor force, where only 44% of workers were 45 or older. Our aging work force is also retiring earlier than the overall work force.

Unrealistic Expectations? You’re Students-

“I just took a 9 month class 8 hours everyday to learn HVACR. Shouldn't I be a Journeyman or at least a 3rd or 4th year Apprentice? “

“I’m not starting for $12 per hour!! I should get the BIG BUCKS NOW!!!”

You’re Student’s Parents- “ We just spent $18,000 on a HVACR Trade school for Jimmy that promised to find him employment

WITH GREAT BENEFITS so we can get him off our dime!”

Training Coordinators (YOU)-“We can’t get the UA or any local HVACR Contractors to have anything to do with our program. For us

to survive, we have to place our graduates somewhere!”

Some MSCA & UA Contractors-“These kids have no real WORK EXPERIENCE! They have been in a basic HVACR program for only 9

months with little day to day HVACR work experience and have just scratched the surface of our industry.”

*10 Best-Paid Skilled Labor Jobs * According to Aol.com

#3 HVAC Controls/Service Technician

Average Salary: $61,000 per year

Without workers skilled in the science of heating, air-conditioning and refrigeration systems, we wouldn't be able to control the temperature, humidity, and the total air quality in residential, commercial, industrial, and other buildings. They also help with the storage and transportation of food, medicine, and other perishable items. Many HVAC technicians will specialize in either installation or maintenance and repair, but must first train to do both. High school students interested in this career should take courses in shop, math, mechanical drawing, applied physics and chemistry, electronics, blueprint reading, and computer applications.
