You're looking at the new Volvos. The 240 Series. Our pride, for youto enjoy. Two and four-door sedans, and a station wagon. They repre-sent Volvo's greatest investment innew features and modifications toenhance safety, strength, durabilityand economy. And quality.

But many of the improvements inour 1975 models have a newemphasis. They are there to makeowning a Volvo an even more re-warding experience. To make thedriving more comfortable, moreluxurious, and even add some im-portant touches of elegance.

Our famous seats have been replaced by seatsthat, we comfortably believe, will be evenmore famous. It's because of tradition.Volvo seats have always been justly notedfor their luxury, as well as the orthopedicsupport they provided. Our new reclining bucket seats are even better. The frame and supporting materials weredesigned in cooperation with medical specia-lists, to give your frame the support it needs.Volvo engineers designed the adjustmentcontrols that let you position the seat to yourindividual comfort.Which, in the long run, or the short trip, isof no small matter. After all, if you can't relax in style in yourVolvo, how can you enjoy driving it.

Which upholstery you getdepends on which model youorder.

(Left) The 242 and 244sedans have cloth in eithersolids or stripes.

(Right) The 245 stationwagon has heavy duty vinyl.

(Below) The GL models haveseating surfaces upholsteredin leather.

But all of them have the samefull-range of adjustmentfeatures.

Even the finest reclining chair doesn't havethe adjustment possibilities Volvo offers. You can angle the backrest. And alter its shapewith the lumbar support. Press a button ontwo-door models (see inset) and the backresttips forward. The seat moves back and forth,of course, and up and down.A Volvo driver is especially well accommo-dated. With one lever, you can raise the frontfor even more legroom. With another lever, you can raise the back for even more visibility.Maximum lift is more than two inches. With cloth seats you appreciate anotherbenefit. Under the cushion's durable uphol-stery is a layer of natural fiber material forbetter ventilation. On all models you get firmerpadding for long-distance comfort. And aseat frame that's five times stronger thanrequired by law.

Five adults can drive around in comfortbecause the Volvo is spacious. But you'll drive at high speeds, at low speeds,in traffic. And on good roads, and poor ones.So comfort isn't enough. That's why the whole Volvo interior is de-signed to keep you and your passengers' safe, comfortable and free from fatigue. You'll findall the dials, gauges, switches and controlscleverly positioned for the order and frequencyyou'll be using them. The heating system will keep your Volvomarvelously warm in the cold. And if you optto air condition it, the unit will keep you andeveryone else serenely cool in the heat. That's so you can maintain your drivingefficiency with expert ease. Which even anexpert driver will appreciate.

You can sample Volvo'sroominess in the showroom. But for a breath of fresh air,or heated or cooled air, youneed to take a test drive.

12- outlet system includesvents (left, below) to defogfront door windows.

New floor console housesthe handbrake and illumina-ted safety belt mounts. And,for rear seat passengers, acourtesy light and ashtray.

At Volvo, where form certainly followsfunction, and safety isn't just 5-mph bumpers,we carry the science of ergonomics to a highdegree.Sit behind the steering wheel, adjust the seatand you'll see what we mean. Everything isideally placed... with the most importantfeatures getting priority: Safety comes first, with comfort a close second. So the ashtrayand glove compartment, while still models ofefficient planning, come last. The heating system, a perfect example, usesthe same 12 outlets for hot air, fresh air orcold air, with easily fitted optional air con-ditioning. You use the same fans and tem-perature control, too.Air flow comes from the base of the wind-shield, away from exhaust fumes, anddistributed as you want it. Even to the rearcompartment. You can have one of Volvo's many radiosinstalled in the redesigned dashboard console. And so you won't miss the hourly news report, our clock now is electronic for precisionand reliability.

You may use your Volvo for short tripsmostly. Or for long trips mostly.Maybe for commuting. Or, perhaps, just forweekends.Up in the mountains in the cold, or on theplains in the heat. You may spend more time than you'd likedriving in snow, or rain. There's nothing you can do about the weather, and that's why a Volvo shines. No matter where or how you use it, yourVolvo will move you from place to place with-out fuss.Because we put into the Volvo all the equip-ment and machinery you need to get the kindof performance you expect from a Volvo.A Volvo. It'll be at home, no matter whereyour home is.

Under every Volvo hoodyou'll find transistorized igni-tion for our fuel infectedengine. Behind every wheel apower-assisted disc brake.Atop every automatic trans-mission a shift lever designedfor easy use and safe opera-tion.

Our engine compartment is another modelof sensible design. To save you servicing costs. For example, you can even inspect thecoolant, hydraulic fluid and windshield wash-ing fluid levels at a glance. But you'll find a few differences. For instance, there's no carburetor. It's been replacedwith a fuel delivery system that regulates gasflow according to the amount of air cominginto the engine.Which at high rpm's is considerable. The regulation, though, is very precise. To ensure that only the gas you need is thegas you burn.To burn the gas efficiently, for good mileageand clean exhaust, we've also eliminated theignition points in favor of more stable andmaintenance-free solid-state ignition. Andour starter is 10% more powerful.Another addition is a cam-powered vacuumpump for Volvo's four-wheel disc brakesystem, which is mostly new for 1975. Thepower-assist is increased, our unique dual cir-cuit hydraulic system further advanced andaction of the separate handbrake improved. While we have but one disc brake systemand but one fuel-injected engine in the 240Series, we have two transmissions. One's anoptional automatic that lets you shift quicklybetween drive and second speeds, thepositions you use most, but locks outPRN and 1 until you depress the safetytrigger. The other is a four-speed manualtransmission to cut fuel costs and increaseperformance.

The 242/244 GLThe 242 GL or the 244 GL is a very particularautomobile, a Volvo that stands out in a crowdof Volvos.A Volvo with even better gas mileage, withmore comfort and more luxury.Because the Volvo GL models are equippedmore thoroughly. To begin with, your GL will be distinguishedby metallic paint and special wheel trim.To stand out even better, slide open the almosthidden steel sunroof, which also serves tobetter your ventilation and illuminate theGL interior. You'll find black leather to sit on and relaxagainst. There's a sports steering wheel to grip. It's warmer in the winter and cooler in thesummer. A tachometer will tell you howeasily the fuel-injected engine is working. The 242 GL or 244 GL also is fitted withpower-assisted steering, so you can take fulladvantage of its wide, steel-belted radial tiresand Volvo's new suspension. You'll cruise easier and quieter with overdrive, which will let you appreciate all that's aroundyou, like our safety body.A particular Volvo should also let you enjoythe benefits we put into every Volvo.

Special features on GLmodels include a sunroof toshed more light on to thecovered sports steering wheel. For better use of the tacho-meter, the overdrive switch i spositioned right on top of theshift lever.

We first introduced the Volvo GL modelslast year. They were well received because theywere well equipped. They were more Volvo.Leather-faced seats from the luxury 164 arestandard. For the driver's seat there's auto-matic heating below 57 degrees and up to79 degrees, of the cushion and backrest. For more relaxed driving and more gaseconomy, the four-speed transmission isequipped with electrically-operated overdrive. It cuts high gear rpm's by 20%. You put it intooperation by flicking a switch atop the shiftlever. It's like a fifth speed, but doesn't needa clutch. For fully-clutchless shifting there's our fully-automatic transmission. Either is standard. With both you get power-assisted steering andwide, steel-belted radial tires.

The Volvo 245The Volvo 245 Station Wagon. It has the considerable features of our sedans.Because it's a logical extension of our 244.But our wagon is no longer, and not muchheavier. So it's one station wagon with sensible sire.As you can see, the shape is good looking andsensible, too. A modified box. The sides arenearly vertical, and so is the rear deck. All of which gives you some very importantadvantages. With the back seat up, you can carry away12 two-suiters and the children. With the back seat down, you can load a six-foot sofa and two chairs. But even with this amazing cargo area, there'sstill about three feet less to squeeze into aparking space than the full-sized wagons. And with the power-assisted steering youcan manoeuvre it all with absolute ease.So we won't be surprised if the Volvo stationwagon, with all its practicality, carriesyou away.

We cut off the roof to showyou the Volvo 245 at its best. But if our inside room doesn'tmeet all your outside needs,we'll be pleased to add a roofrack. Or a tow hitch.

I

Our rear window wiper andwasher will take care of theice melted by our defroster.

Mechanically, the Volvo 245 is littledifferent from a Volvo 244.The rear seat is full width, though it easilyconverts from either side to give you morewagon. Even the spare tire is in the sameplace, very accessible behind its own cover. But the 245 has an extra child-proof doorlock, because the wagon has an extra door. And stiffer rear springs and shock absorbersto support a heavier load. The 245 has additional features in the back:A rear window wiper and washer, and a fully-carpeted floor with a storage compartmentunderneath.Upholstery is easily-cleaned vinyl, sincethe 245 can get heavy duty use. And, unlikethe 242 and 244, power-assisted steering isstandard with the four-speed transmission.Because it's an advantage with the biggertires.

The New Volvos. There the ultimate results of the painstakingresearch, design, testing and specificationsof our Volvo engineers working at our$46 million research center, and rigorouslytested at our new proving grounds. All the changes they made, and the improve-ments they added may not be apparent toyour eye, but they will be apparent on theroad. If you haven't already done so, take the newVolvo out on the road where it belongs andenjoy it.The ride you'll experience is the result ofa totally new suspension up front, and a greatlymodified one in the rear. And the newsteering system. And steel-belted radial tires.Every modification affects the ride andhandling of the Volvo. Very favorably. And, no, you don't lose the controlled feeland ruggedness of the Volvo. You do gain in comfort.

You don't have to be anautomotive expert to appre-ciate the technology behindthe Volvo suspension.Just take a test drive over theworst cobblestones and ruttedroads you can find andthrough fast turns and sharpcurves.

As is usual with Volvo, some of our biggestproduct improvements can't be easily seen. That's why we show you these photographs. To fully understand the engineering behindthe Volvo steering and suspension you'd needto read the SAE Paper, which we presented.Logically enough, the report has an unusualtitle, "Crash Avoidance Engineering".So, you see, many of the new or modifiedcomponents in the 1975 240 Series modelswere made for safety. This means that every feature blends togetherto form a whole. The new MacPherson strut front suspension, for example, meant that a new system forwheel mounting should be developed. Done. With an improved suspension up front, alongwith a wider track and longer wheelbase, changes would be appreciated in the rearsuspension. Completed. The ball joints are not load carrying, as theywere, so rack and pinion steering seemeda natural. Included.Tires should be wider. They are, and steel-belted, too. We wanted less body roll in turns. And a simpler design with less wear. Betterdirectional stability should be provided. Withmore neutral steering. To give the Volvoimproved road holding and handling plus amore comfortable ride. Accomplished. To our chagrin, the turning circle is increasedby about one foot. But since it's still less thanyou'd expect to find on a car Volvo's size, thefigure is acceptable. Very acceptable.

We've established a reputation as a safe car.Probably ever since we first introduced safetybelts, way back in 1959.Safety means you must consider that some-thing may go wrong.Sit in our steel cage and think about it.You'll feel better for it.

New headlight mounts makereplacement a snap.

A hard rubber coveringprotects the impact-absorbingbumpers.

Bumpers are attached tooil-filled hydraulic shockabsorbers.

Rust susceptible panels, likethose in the front-end, aremade of galvanized steel.

Every wheel is equippedwith a power-assisted discbrake.

Two independent braking circuitseach operate on both front wheelsand one rear wheel. If one circuitshould ever fail, you'd still retainthree brakes. And about 80% ofnormal braking efficiency withbut a slight increase in pedalpressure.

Dashboard lights will tell youif your handbrake is engaged,a brake circuit fails or a lowbeam, tail light or stop lightburns out.

Rear stabilizer baron sedanscuts body roll and improvesroad holding. Especially inthe wet.

Rocker panels are ventilatedto dry out moisture and pre-vent rusting from the inside.

Anti-intrusion bars arewelded into every door toprotect against sidewipes.

Rear window is electricallyheated to melt ice.

The gas tank is positionedforward to protect it in a rearend collision.

Steel-belted radials arestandard for better perform-ance, tire mileage and gasmileage.
