WHAT MAKES OUR CENTER SO UNIQUE? In our beautiful three-story building located in the heart of downtown Glen Cove, our dedicated staff and extraordinary volunteers plan, develop, and coordinate programs and services for older residents in Glen Cove and its surrounding communities. For more than three decades the Glen Cove Senior Center has offered opportunities, adventures and assistance in meeting the challenges of aging to senior citizens 60 years of age and over.

What makes our Center unique is the energy of hundreds of seniors’ spirits and the diverse continuum of care we provide for the active senior as well as the senior with special needs who benefits from our Adult Day Program and Friendly Visiting Services.

Our wealth of programs provides a variety of intellectual and recreational opportunities. Seniors can focus on their health in our multi-faceted wellness and exercise classes, brain fitness activities, workshops and health screenings or nourish their minds in our nationally recognized Life Long Learning Program, weekly discussion groups, computer training, cultural arts celebrations, excursions and intergenerational partnerships.

We strive for excellence in all we do and are very proud of the accomplishments of our staff and volunteers who are often recognized for their efforts. Our Lifelong Learning Program was the recipient of the MindAlert Award presented by the American Society on Aging. Within the last few years, we received funding and special acknowledgement from the Unitarian Universalist Church for our highly successful Campaign Against Dementia and we were honored to be invited by The Kimmel Foundation and Selfhelp to pilot the Long Island Virtual Senior Center educating and entertaining homebound seniors all over the country.

We take great pride in our widespread and distinctive community outreach programs. Our Center has assisted many young people through our mentoring and scholarship programs, and fundraised for people locally, nationally and internationally in crisis. Despite our age - or perhaps because of it - we are devoted activists and continually advocate for additional housing, better healthcare, and social and financial support that foster independence, dignity, and peace of mind.

A delicious hot or cold lunch, curb-to-curb transportation and ample parking for those who drive, offer the backdrop to revisiting an old hobby, discovering a new interest or just spending a relaxing and often, inspiring afternoon with friends. The Glen Cove Senior Center is currently funded with ongoing grants from the United States Administration on Aging, the New York State Office for Aging, and the Nassau County Office for Aging, as well as generous support from the City of Glen Cove and the Glen Cove SAGE Foundation.

Dear Readers, We warmly welcome you to the first edition of our monthly newsletter which we hope will inform and delight you and reinforce our commitment to serving the seniors of our community. Each newsletter will include our calendar of activities and delicious menu options for enjoying lunch with us. We hope you will be able to take advantage of both a great meal and a stimulating lecture or exciting program as often as possible. We also will be including upcoming events and trips, as well as valuable articles on senior living, news from the Senior Center, and helpful community resources. As we launch, we thought it would be best to begin by introducing you to some of our staff and volunteers and the initiatives that we are currently working on. One initiative that we will be sharing with you in the months ahead that we are especially excited about is our Age-Friendly designation through AARP and the World Health Organization. We will be exploring eight domains that include housing, transportation, and outdoor spaces in an attempt to improve our already wonderful City. If you would be interested in being a part of this special project, please contact us at 516-759-9610 and ask for Laurie. We are privileged to serve almost two thousand members within Nassau County and with the growing senior population in our country, look forward to serving even more older adults in the years to come. This new format for sharing information will allow us to reach additional neighbors and friends. Although we are called the Glen Cove Senior Center, we are a community center and invite you to visit our art gallery, heritage herb garden, boutique-style thrift shop, and gift store. We welcome your ideas and suggestions for future issues and look forward to incorporating your thoughts to make our newsletter the very best it can be. Please note that as a government agency, we cannot endorse specific advertisers; however, we greatly appreciate their support. They are making this publication possible. They are active members of our business community who take great pride in their service to seniors. We applaud their efforts and can’t thank them enough. Here’s to great summer reading!

All the Best,

Carol

Our monthly calendar is packed with musical performances, a variety of daily chair exercises, stimulating brain games, art classes, fascinating guests, and field trips on our brand new wheelchair accessible bus. We also offer door-to-door bus transportation to and from our facility for residents within our local catchment area. With the help of government funding, our program is quite affordable. PROJECT BEACON CAN SAVE LIVES Sherri Meagher is the social worker for Project Beacon at the Glen Cove Senior Center. Her services include short term counseling, crisis counseling, case management, referrals, entitlement assistance, home assessments, care-giver support, bereavement, advocacy with financial and legal matters, health care and housing.

Please register at the Glen Cove Senior Center or call 516-759-9610. There are no fees for registration or for Project Beacon’s social work support.

ACTIVITIES & TRIPS

It has been scientifically proven that enjoying life leads to better health and longevity. In fact, people over 60 who enjoy life are three times more likely to live a longer and healthier life than those that are not active or having “fun”. Being active and having fun can help one avoid memory issues and enhance one’s creativity and mental sharpness. Engaging in enjoyable activities will increase optimism, reduce stress, prevent depression, boost the immune system, and reduce the risk of illness. For these reasons, we suggest that our members take advantage of all of the fun and incredible activities that our Senior Center offers like: Pickleball, Tai Chi, Trivia, Dan-cercise, Glass Jewelry, Bingo, Monday-Funday, Seniorobics, Movies, Drum Circles, Painting, Karaoke, and Creative Writing, just to name a few. We always have informative lectures, special guests, musicians and performers at our Center. We offer many wonderful trips as well. We’ve recently visited The U.N., Broadway, The Met, Natural History Museum, Bronx Zoo, MoMA, NY Historical Society Museum, Long Island Aquarium, and the NY Yankees.

Membership is free, and most of the programs are as well. If you have any questions, please call (516) 759-9610 and ask for Eric Shuman, Activity Coordinator

MUSEUM OF MODERN ART

FATHER’S DAY CELEBRATION

SPECIAL PROGAMMING

“Art enables us to find ourselves and lose ourselves at the same time.”

On Thursday, June 14th, the Glen Cove Senior Center went on a trip to the Museum of Modern Art in NYC. Our private docent showed us some of the most famous paintings in the world including: “The Starry Night” by Vincent van Gogh, “Christina’s World” by Andrew Wyeth, “The Japanese Foot-bridge” by Claude Monet, “Girl before a Mirror” by Pablo Picasso, and “The Sleeping Gypsy” by Henri Rousseau, just to name a few. We learned all about art history, how the process is sometimes more important than the finished product, and how all art is subjective.

“Great things are done when men

and mountains meet.”

On Friday, June 15th, the Senior Center celebrated Father’s Day. Bob Lipp, author and speaker, discussed how challenging it is to be a parent and the goals you set for yourself while raising children. He then asked seniors to join in and share their favorite fatherhood moments. All men received a practical tool box and tape measure with a beautiful card. Thanks to all the important men in our lives for supporting and inspiring us.

SITE COUNCIL CHAIRPERSON

JEAN QUARTAROLO

I have been a volunteer at the Glen Cove Senior Center since I moved to Glen Cove ten years ago. The Center has been my second home ever since my arrival. I did not know a soul when I came to the Center but now, I have many friends and know many great people. There are several wonderful programs to choose from, so there’s something for everyone. I think all seniors should keep active and join our Cen-ter. It will enrich your life!

GCSC ADVOCATE

SHIRLEY PINCKNEY

I became a member of our Center eight years ago and took on an advocacy role because I believe what senior have to say is important. As a rider of the bus, I realized that we needed a safe storage area for assistive devices. When I brought this to our Director and Site Manager’s attention, we immediately began exploring funding for a new bus. By reaching out to community leaders and speaking at public hearings, we were heard and our dream became a reality. “Believe, be patient, have confidence in what you are advocating for and someone will always be there to listen.”

Recently the Glen Cove Senior Center received a new bus to help our seniors access important programs and vital services.

We would like to thank County Executive Laura Curran and County Legislature Delia DeRiggi-Whitton and the Nassau County Legislature,

and Mayor Tim Tenke and the Glen Cove City Council for making this possible. We would also like to thank Ann Fangmann and Camille Byrne from the

Glen Cove Community Development Agency and Toni Kessel from Legislator DeRiggi-Whitton’s office for their continuing support.

Special thanks to Shirley Pinckney for her tremendous ongoing advocacy efforts.
