Mission Statement
Manifesto
PROJECT IDENTITYYouth Volunteers Townsville exists to connect the youth of Townsville with charities and community organisations that need unpaid help, in the form of time, service and skills.
Youth Volunteers Townsville intends to increase awareness among the youth of Townsville of the need for volunteers and highlight the importance of volunteering and helping out within our local community. As youth ourselves we understand the challenges, motives and reasons why youth do or do not volunteer. We believe that we can connect with them on a level that they will understand and give them messages that they will respond positively too.
2
Influences
PROJECT IDENTITYInitially our project group had our hearts set on redesigning an existing local charity or community organisations website. However when we were researching we discovered a website called Volunteering North Queensland. VNQ serves the community by referring volunteers to other not-for-profit-organisations. It was then that the idea of Youth Volunteers Townsville was born. Instead of redesigning someone else’s brand we would create our own.
Unlike NVQ we wanted to create a website that would be targeted specifically at the youth of Townsville. We wanted a website that was both aesthetically pleasing and informative without compromising on functionality and usability. When researching we found there were no local websites or organisations that offered a referral service specifically target at youth for local charities and not-for-profit organisations. We identified this as a gap in the local volunteering market and this reaffirmed our project idea.

Target Market
PROJECT IDENTITYThe website itself can be used by young people of all ages that are willing to volunteer within the Townsville area. However our specific marketing activities will be targeted at 16-24 year old university, Tafe and secondary school students within the Townsville region.
To reach this market we will be employing a variety of different marketing tactics and tools. This can be viewed in the Marketing Plan.
4
Intended Outcome
PROJECT IDENTITYThe intended outcome of Youth Volunteers Townsville is to connect youth to charities and not-for-profit organisations that need their help. In doing so we aim to create awareness among the young people of our community of the need for their participation in volunteering, and that it’s not only good for the community but also the individual involved. We hope to not only get young people involved in volunteering, but make them realise just how important it is for the betterfunctioning of society. We don’t see the website as a short term project, but an ongoing process that will continue grow with involvement from charities, not-for-profit organisations and the young people of Townsville.

Volunteering in Australia
industry researchIn Australia, more than 34% of the population over the age of 18 participate in some form of voluntary work, contributing more than $11 billion annually. A volunteer is defined as someone who willingly gives unpaid help, in the form of time, service or skills, through an organisation or group (Australian Bureau of Statistics, 2007).
Since 1995 participation in volunteering has steadily increased and this has been attributed to reductions in funding from the Government to organisations and charities. Combined with increasing expectations that not-for-profit organisations will provide services that previously have been the responsibility of the government, means the demand for unpaid workers has increased (Voluntas, 2007).
6
Australian Volunteering Demographics
industry researchIn terms of hours committed, a volunteer in Australia is more likely to be a woman than a man. 36% of women participate in some form of volunteer work, compared to only 32% of men. The highest contributing age group is the 35-44 year olds, with 43% of the population volunteering some of their time. Just over 29% of 18-24 year olds give up some of their time and skills to volunteer. This age bracket is amongst lowest in terms of volunteer participation. This can be viewed in the graph below.
7
Types of Volunteers
industry researchResearch conducted by Dolnicar & Randle suggests that there are six types of volunteers. These are:
1. Classic Volunteer – involved to do something worthwhile and help others. Typically older, less active in the workforce and very active in volunteering.2. Dedicated Volunteer – contribute the most hours per year to an average of 6 volunteering organisations.3. Personally Involved Volunteer – participate in the volunteering industry only temporarily, as long as their loved one is part of an organisation of which they rely on.4. Volunteers for Personal Satisfaction – motivated by gaining their own satisfaction and represent the least distinct segment of volunteers.5. Altruists – do the most work in the area of befriending and listening to people.6. Niche Volunteers – young and new to the volunteering industry, this group is typically highly educated and state a variety of reason for volunteering including feeling obliged, to gain work experience and religious reasons. (Voluntas, 2007)
8
Industry Market
industry researchUnderstanding the motivations of volunteers and why they volunteer will help us to gauge what it is they are looking for in volunteer work, and help us to devise our marketing strategy.
By identifying the different segments of the volunteer market makes it easier for us to be efficient when creating our marketing strategy. Our campaign can be designed to specifically target the segment of the market we want to attract, with messages that are meaningful and motivational to them. Our campaign will target ‘Niche Volunteers’; those that are young, new to the volunteering industry, highly educated, and have a variety of reasons for volunteering. Specifically, our marketing campaign will be targeted at 16-24 year old university and secondary school students within the Townsville region.

Web Pages - Our Volunteers
design briefThe Our Volunteers page showcases stories and galleries of past volunteers. This shows the viewer what it is like to volunteer.
As Townsville is a great sunny place the website aims to match this, portraying mountains and hills, birds and a clear blue sky. By doing this it makes people feel calm and want to get involved in volunteering. Each page has a different theme and each have similar layouts (depicted by a grid system).

The site is presently a static† implementation with plans to evolve beyond this into a simplistic and fully featured, custom built Content Management System (CMS).
The website is hosted with Dreamhost, a popular and well know website hosting company; residing on a private dedicated system with an underlying Linux installation, Apache server, version 5.3 of PHP (server scripting language) and the added benefit of unlimited storage and bandwidth‡.
†: All document requests are served as hard coded resources.‡: Dreamhost ensures sufficient storage and bandwidth as the site expands or becomes increasingly popular.

Website Accessability
website informationIn order to make the Youth Volunteers Townsville website accessible to as much of our target audience as possible it has been designed to be viewable on a wide scope of platforms. Alex, our website developer advised us to design the site on a page 960 pixels wide. This will make it viewable and accessible on large monitors as well as mobile devices. This is important as our target audience are just as likely to access the website on their hand-held devices and smart phones as they are their laptops and desktop computers.
33
Charities Involved
website contentAs of the 30th August 2012, there are twelve participants who will be showcased in the YVT website. These will be categorised to target specific interests of each viewer. The categories consist of community, kids & youth, animals, environment and art & culture. Some charities involved are:

Photo Concept
photography briefThe purpose of the photography for this project is to ‘sell’ volunteering to the youth of Townsville; there is no better way to do this then to photograph volunteers at work. Therefore, by having images it will provide a taste of what viewers would be doing if they choose to volunteer.
Before each photo shoot the volunteers will sign a consent form agreeing to the use of their images in any publications we produce. Each image will capture the energy and passion of young volunteers, which will appeal to our target market. The photographer will consider the correct lighting, will emphasisecolour and will create an effective composition.
Each and every image will give each charity an opportunity to advertise the types of events they run for volunteers.
Equipment such as canon 5D, 24-105mm Lens, flash, tripod and a memory card is needed for this task.

39
marketing planTools & TacticsMarketing tools that will be used during the marketing campaign include:
• Presentations – given at James Cook University, Tafe and certain high schools to introduce Youth Volunteers Townsville. These presentations will only be 2-3 minutes long and will involve a quick introduction to YVT, why young people should volunteer and what they have to do next. These presentations will focus on the benefits of volunteering for young people.
• Flyers/Handouts – following presentations A5 handouts will be given to the young people present. These handouts will reinforce the key messages from the presentations, as well as provide a YVT website address. This will act as a call to action for young people to go and check out the web site and places they can give their time too around town. Flyers will also be distributed to faculty offices. • Posters – upon the launch of the website posters will be put up around university on all major noticeboards. This will help to further reinforce the key messages and the poster will also display a call to action for young people to jump online.
40
marketing planTools & Tactics Cont.• Articles in JCCN + Other University Publications – following the website launch journalism students, JCNN and other university publications will be approached in an attempt to have an article written about YVT. The article will acts as a follow up to the presentations. This will help to reinforce the key messages as well as provide another call to action.
• Media Release – a media release will be written and distributed to various community publications and radio stations around Townsville. This will coincide with the launch of the website and will include the reasons why youth should volunteer. The media release will also act as a means to attract more charities and not-for-profit organisations to feature on the website.
41
marketing planTools & Tactics Cont. The key tactic throughout the marketing campaign will be to reinforce 3 key messages to the Townsville youth. As seen in the Situation Analysis, the youth of Australia volunteer for different reasons than other demographics. Youth volunteer because:
1. It will look good on their resume.2. Volunteering may lead to a job3. Volunteering may provide a good networking opportunity.
These three motivators make up the three key messages we will be communicating when marketing volunteering and Youth Volunteers Townsville. By informing youth that volunteering benefits themselves as well as the community we believe we can increase the youth volunteering participation rate.

marketing planEvaluationIn order to measure the success of the website we will employ the use of Google Analytics to determine how many people are using the website. We can determine how many visitors or ‘hits’ we are receiving per week on the site. We can also find which pages visitors to the website are viewing the most and how long they are spending on these pages. We can then follow up with the charities and not-for-profit organisations and find out whether or not a visitor spending time on their page results in them recruiting a new volunteer.
To determine whether the website and subsequent marketing material had any effect on the participation rate of young volunteers we will set a participation benchmark prior to the website going live. This will be determined by asking the charities and not-for-profit organisations how many youth volunteers they currently have. Once the website has been live for a month and the marketing plan has been implemented we will measure the participation rate again. From these two measurements we will be able to determine if the website and marketing had any effect on the participation rate of youth volunteering in Townsville.

extra infoVenue / EventBased on the below information we are holding our event at Casa lounge bar and restaurant in Flinders street Townsville. This location is ideal for our guests and also being a Friday night will prove an ideal location for everybody to have a relaxing evening and enjoy our hospitality.

To raise funds we have utilised JCU Open Day, and held a sausage sizzle in the School of Creative Arts court yard. This was purely to raise money for our end of year event; we will provide food and at least one beverage for all guests. The evaluation below demonstrates our expenses and profits.
Goal: $300Our total costs were $140. This includes sausages (200), soft drinks (4 cartons), ice (6 bags) and water (1 carton) and our bread was generously donated. Through selling everything at $2 we made a profit of $360.
We believe this sausage sizzle was a success as this profit will cover the costs for our end of year event.

We are handing this project over to Anita at Volunteering North Queensland. She currently has a venture promoting volunteering, targeting people within the North Queensland region. However, her attempts at doing so have attracted mostly older people.
Her future with YVT will see her appealing to a younger crowd.
This Handover will be the main focus of our event as we have put our best efforts into the project and would like to see it succeed.
