Clinging to a 14-13lead, Chelsea’s defenseneeded a big play. VisitingYpsilanti was driving forwhat appeared to be a pos-sible game-winning scorein the waning minutes of last Friday’s SoutheasternConference White Divisioncontest.
On a fourth down and fiveplay from the 50-yard line, the Phoenix dropped backto pass. A quick throw overthe middle on a slant pattern
looked to be open, but theball hit a finger and caromedup into the air and into thewaiting arms of Bulldog line-backer Logan Yordanich. The6-foot-3, 220-pound senior ranthe ball back to the Ypsilanti10-yard line before being tack-led out of bounds.
Yordanich said he hap-pened to be in the right spotat the right time to make theplay.
“I can’t catch, so I had to tipthe ball to myself,” he said.“It just felt really good. It wasnice to be able to make thatplay.”
With Yordanich’s intercep-tion, Chelsea (3-0, 3-0 SEC)held on to defeat the Phoenix(1-2, 1-1 SEC) 14-13.
Bulldog coach Brad Bushsaid his defense was the dif-ference against Ypsilanti.
“Obviously our defensemade some plays to win thegame,” he said. “We wereplaying without (Andrew)Koch and (Cal) Bauer inthe second half, two of our
best players, but other guysstepped up. I’m proud of theway our defense played.”
Also proud was Ypsilanticoach Jason Malloy.
“I’m smiling now, but I’mhurting inside,” he said. “Ourkids played their butts off. Wehad some penalties tonightand some missed assign-ments and those are thingsthat come back to haunt you.One of the things I talked
about early in the week waswe knew Chelsea would playwell. We knew they would dothe right things. We had tostay mentally tough. And wedid.”
Malloy said losing a closeballgame, on the road, in ahostile environment was atest for his team.
“I think this shows thatour program is still comingalong,” he said. “What I ammost proud of is that our kidsnever quit. And when youget kids that never quit andplay hard until the final playand walk off the field barely
moving, you can be proud asa coach.”
The contest started favor-ably enough for the Phoenixas junior Mark Miles recov-ered a Chelsea fumble onthe fourth play of the game. With the turnover, Ypsilantistarted its first drive at itsown 25-yard line. A 12-playdrive ended in a punt attemptby the Phoenix. The snap, however, was high and theBulldogs pounced on the ballat the Ypsilanti 39-yard line.

Eric Ball. Mike Bass. Rodney Holman. SteveLawrence. These are just a few of thenames from Ypsilanti’s glorious football
history.Arguably Washtenaw County’s greatest grid-
iron program in terms of talent churned outthroughout the decades, Phoenix football hassuffered through a few rough seasons recently.Since 2000, Ypsilanti has posted only three win-ning years. Those winning seasons were in 2008,2007 and 2006. The rest of the decade has beenmostly uneventful. The Phoenix have made justtwo playoff appearances since 2000.
The dry spell appears to be over, however, withthe emergence of first-year head coach JasonMalloy. A former coach at Lincoln High School,Malloy has breathed new life into a programthat recently seemed on the brink of disaster.
Last year, former coach Dave Poole left theprogram in midseason. Malloy stepped in anddespite entering a difficult situation, righted theship and now has the Ypsilanti program headedin the right direction.
Though currently sporting a 1-2 overallrecord, the Phoenix are a couple points awayfrom being unbeaten at 3-0. This season,Ypsilanti has lost games to Milan 25-24 andChelsea 14-13. In their lone victory so far thisyear, the Phoenix defeated Ann Arbor Skyline36-0 in Week 2.
Last Friday, Ypsilanti lost to host Chelsea. ThePhoenix took the Bulldogs, a traditional powercurrently unbeaten at 3-0, to the limit. With moretime on the clock, Ypsilanti might have been ableto overcome Chelsea.
