By Don Richter Heritage Newspapers Clinging to a 14-13 lead, Chelsea’s defense needed a big play . Visiting Ypsilanti was driving for what appeared to be a pos- sible game-winning score in the waning minutes of last Friday’s Southeastern Conference White Division contest. On a fourth down and five play from the 50-yard line, the Phoenix dropped back to pass. A quick throw over the middle on a slant pattern looked to be open, but the ball hit a finger and caromed up into the air and into the waitin g arms of Bulldo g line- backer Logan Yordanich. The 6-foot-3, 220-pound senior ran the ball back to the Ypsilanti 10-yard line before being tack- led out of bounds . Yordanich said he hap- pened to be in the right spot at the right time to make the play. “I can’t catch, so I had to tip the ball to myself,” he said. “It just felt really good. It was nice to be able to make that play.” With Yordanich’s intercep- tion, Chelsea (3-0, 3-0 SEC) held on to defeat the Phoenix (1-2, 1-1 SEC) 14-13. Bulldog coach Brad Bush said his defense was the dif- ference against Ypsilanti. “Obviously our defense made some plays to win the game,” he said. “We were playing without (Andrew) Koch and (Cal) Bauer in the second half, two of our best players, but other guys stepped up. I’m proud of the way our defense played.” Also proud was Ypsilanti coach Jason Malloy. “I’m smiling now, but I’m hurting inside,” he said. “Our kids played their butts off. We had some penalties tonight and some missed assign- ments and those are things that come back to haunt you. One of the things I talked about early in the week was we knew Chelsea would play well. We knew they would do the right things. We had to stay mentally tough. And we did.” Malloy said losing a close ballgame, on the road, in a hostile environment was a test for his team. “I think this shows that our program is still coming along,” he said. “What I am most proud of is that our kids never quit. And when you get kids that never quit and play hard until the final play and walk off the field barely moving, you can be proud as a coach.” The contest started favor- ably enough for the Phoenix as junior Mark Miles recov- ered a Chelsea fumble on the fourth play of the game. With the tur nover , Ypsilanti started its first drive at its own 25-yard line. A 12-play drive ended in a punt attempt by the Phoenix. The snap, however , was high and the Bulldogs pounced on the ball at the Ypsilanti 39-yard line. The dry spell appears to be over, however, withthe emergence of first-year head coach JasonMalloy. A former coach at Lincoln High School,Malloy has breathed new life into a programthat recently seemed on the brink of disaster.

Last year, former coach Dave Poole left theprogram in midseason. Malloy stepped in anddespite entering a difficult situation, righted theship and now has the Ypsilanti program headedin the right direction.

Last Friday, Ypsilanti lost to host Chelsea. ThePhoenix took the Bulldogs, a traditional powercurrently unbeaten at 3-0, to the limit. With moretime on the clock, Ypsilanti might have been ableto overcome Chelsea.
