Why Battle Abbey?
• The battle of Hastings took place here in 1066 because William, Duke of Normandy wanted to be king.
• William and his army defeated King Harold and the Saxon army.
• King Harold was injured and died. A stone in the Abbey church marks where he fell.
• William became King of England
Task 1 - CostingIn any trip, the costing is very important. We
need to find out several things. For example, the number of adults and coaches needed, the cost per student and the total cost.
• The worksheet you have been given will guideyou through the questions.
• You must work individually. • You may use a calculator but all working out
must be shown. • Record the answers on your answer sheet for
reference now and later.
Task 2 - Location• In order for the trip to run smoothly, we must know
our route from school to battle abbey and how long it will take us to get there.
• Using the road map provided, plan the route from school to Battle Abbey. You must try to find the quickest but also the easiest route. Remember we are travelling on coaches!

Task 3 -Letter• Now that we have all the information on the trip,
you need to write a letter that will be sent home to parents.
• Use the writing frame provided to help you. This
website will help. http://www.askoxford.com/betterwriting/letterwriting
The letter must include the following details:• The date of the trip• The purpose of the trip• What you will be doing • What the pupils must bring/wear• The cost per pupil i.e. how much it will cost them.
Task 4 – Risk assessment
• As part of any school activity, a risk assessment must be done. This looks at all of the things that might go wrong!
• Using the table on your worksheet, identify as many different risks as you can.
• Are there any ways we can try to prevent them happening?
• There are some pictures on the next slide to help you think of the risks.
