Q: What do you think “Specialised” means?
You are here:
Organism(e.g. Human)
Systems(e.g. Nervous System)
Organs(e.g. Skin)
Tissue(e.g. Nerve)
Cells(e.g. Neuron)
Q: What does specialised mean??
A: Something that is designed to do a particular job
Specialised Cells
Q: What is a specialised cell?
A: A cell that has a special shape and features that help it to do it’s job
Structure:
Big surface area
Contains haemoglobin which pick up oxygen
Function:
Carry oxygen around the body
Red Blood Cells
Structure:
Found in leaves and stems of plants
Function:
Work in pairs
Control what goes in and out of leaves (water, gas, etc)
Guard Cells
Structure:
Long
Can carry electrical impulses
Connections at each end
Function:
Carry nerve impulses around your body
Nerve Cells
Structure:
Long tail for swimming
Enzymes in the head to get into the egg
Function:
To carry genetic information to the egg
Sperm Cell
Structure:
Large surface area
Thin cell wall
Function:
Absorbs minerals and water from soil
Root Hair Cells
Structure:
Contains yolk
Function:
Provides a large food store for the new cell being formed.
Cytoplasm containing yolk
Layer of jelly
Nucleus
Egg Cell
Smallest Building Block of Life
As you can see, the cell builds anything and everything in life
From this point on in Year 8, we’ll be looking at the Human Body
2. Tissue Cells specialise to do a certain job
(e.g. muscle cell)
These specialised cells join together to make a tissue (e.g. muscle tissue)
There are four main types of tissue
Each type does a different job
Organism(e.g. Human)
Systems(e.g. Nervous System)
Organs(e.g. Skin)
Tissue(e.g. Nerve)
Cells(e.g. Neuron)
Muscle tissue, found in the heart
Organs When a group of tissues work together they form
an organ
Q: Can you label these organs?
Organism(e.g. Human)
Systems(e.g. Nervous System)
Organs(e.g. Skin)
Tissue(e.g. Nerve)
Cells(e.g. Neuron)
Organ Systems Groups of organs work together in
organ systems
These systems provide a specific service for our bodies.
For example, the nervous system carries impulses throughout the body so that we humans can sense our surroundings, and send signals to other organs like our muscles!
