2. SCHOOL ROUTINES

2.1 School Hours & Recess/Break Timings

Note: 1. Pupils should be in school by 7.25 a.m. daily to attend flag-raising ceremony at the

school hall. 2. Pupils are encouraged to bring light healthy snacks from home such as sandwiches,

fruits or biscuits for the short 5 to 10 min snack break in class.

2.2 Co-Curricular activities (CCA)

In Yu Neng, CCA is an integral part of our pupils’ holistic education. Through their active participation in CCA, pupils can cultivate values such as discipline, perseverance, resilience and teamwork as well as develop vital 21st Century Competencies which in turn will empower them to thrive in our rapidly changing society.

All P3 to P6 pupils are strongly encouraged to participate in a CCA. A CCA selection and trial day will be conducted on Thursday 19 January from 2.15pm to 4.15pm. This is open for all P3 pupils as well as those in other levels who are currently not in any CCA.

Prior to the CCA selection and trial day, pupils are encouraged to find out more details about the CCAs that may interest them at our school website. On the CCA selection and trial day, parents of P3 pupils are invited to watch the CCA trial sessions so that they will be able to guide their child to make a more-informed choice. The various CCAs will set up booths to allow the student to have some hands-on experience and enquire about the CCA that they are interested in. Following this, each pupil is required to select 5 CCAs according to his/her preference from the list of CCAs offered by the school via the AsknLearn portal during the period from Thursday 19 January to Tuesday 24 January 2017. Each pupil will be given only ONE CCA. Due to the limited availability of the places for each CCA, pupils who have chosen a CCA that is over-subscribed will have to go through a balloting process. In the event that a student is not offered any CCA of his/her choice, the school will allocate another CCA to the student.

Pupils who already have existing CCAs are strongly discouraged from switching CCAs as they need some time to build up knowledge and master their skills involved in the CCA. It is important that teamwork and leadership skills are honed in the same CCA with their peers as they develop the skills of the CCA concerned. CCA will commence in Term 1 Week 6 i.e. 6 February 2017 except for selected CCAs preparing for competitions early in the year. All pupils in the various CCAs will be informed of the arrangement by their teachers in charge.

2.3 Academic Support Arrangements

Remedial/ supplementary/enrichment lessons after curriculum time will commence in Term 1 Week 6 i.e. 6 February 2017 onwards. These are customised lessons that are designed to further support your child/ward as needed. If your child is selected for these lessons, you will receive a separate letter and consent form from the teacher-in-charge.

2.4 Attendance

At Yu Neng Primary School, we expect regular and punctual attendance. We believe that pupils who attend school regularly are more likely to make optimum progress in their learning in school.

Parents are reminded NOT to take leave of absence during term time to travel abroad without valid reasons and first consulting the form teacher and principal of their travel plans. The principal must be informed in writing, prior to travel plans, if pupils need to take leave of absence for valid reasons to travel abroad during term time. We appreciate your kind understanding and cooperation in this matter.

2.5 Health and Well-being matters

Your child’s health and well-being is of utmost importance to us. We want to ensure that the school remains a safe and healthy environment for all our pupils and staff. As such we request that your child do not attend school if he/she is unwell and should seek medical attention immediately. Please inform your child’s Form teacher via phone call or e-mail if your child is ill and unable to attend school. All absences from official school lessons/ programmes must be covered by valid reasons such as medical certificate.

The school takes a vigilant and proactive approach to ensure a safe and healthy environment for the whole school community. As part of the school’s Standard Operating Procedures (SOP), we will conduct regular checks on pupils’ Oral Digital Thermometers (ODTs) as well as whole school temperature-taking exercises. The first school wide temperature-taking exercise will take place on Friday 6 January 2017.

• P1: Every P1 pupil will be issued with a new ODT prior to the Temperature Taking Exercise. This is a one-off distribution and any future replacement of ODTs will have to be borne by parents. The ODT has been issued to your child for a pre-exercise check on Thursday 5 January 2017 and the temperature taking exercise will take place on Friday 6 January 2017. The ODT will be returned to your child after the temperature taking exercise on 6 January 2017.

• P2-P6: Our P2 to P6 pupils have been issued their personal ODT in previous years. If your child had misplaced his/her ODT, a replacement can be purchased from the school bookshop at $4.50 per piece.

We seek your assistance to ensure that your child brings his/her ODT that is in good working condition to school.

2.6 Issuance of School Smart Card for P1 and P6 pupils The Ministry of Education (MOE) will be conducting the yearly photo-taking exercise for all pupils in Primary One (P1) and Primary Six (P6) for the issue of the School Smart Card (SSC). MOE’s vendor, M/s Transit Link Pte Ltd will be in school on Friday 6 January 2017 to take photographs for our P1 and P6 pupils to facilitate the making of SSC. The service is free. Please ensure that your child come to school in clean and smart school uniform on the photo taking day.

3. UPCOMING EVENTS 3.1 Lunar New Year Celebration &

School Hours on Fri 27 Jan

The school will be celebrating Lunar New Year on Friday 27 January 2017. This is an opportunity for all pupils and staff of different races to come together and celebrate the Chinese tradition and culture. Pupils are encouraged to come dressed in red T-shirt, school Khaki shorts/ skirt and school shoes on that day. However, do take note that this is not compulsory and pupils can be dressed in school uniform too if they choose to. Pupils will be dismissed at 10.00am on that day. Do take note that pupils need not attend school on Tuesday 31 January 2017 as it is a school holiday. School will resume on Wednesday 1 February 2017.

4. IMPORTANT THINGS TO NOTE

4.1 School-Home Partnership

As a valued partner of the school, we have put in place several platforms and channels to ‘connect’ with you. I will be keeping in touch with you via the monthly letter to parents (LTP) which will also be uploaded in the parents’ portal in our school website. Other than that, there would also be other just-in-time circulars, occasional SMS-notices for important notifications or reminders and also periodic updates in our school website. The Pupil Handbook, Meet Parents Sessions and Learning Management System, AsknLearn portal are also other channels of communication between parents and teachers.

We have set aside the morning of Saturday 14 January 2017 as our first Meet the Parents session (MPS 1) for all levels. During MPS 1, you will get a chance to meet up with the teachers of your child. I will also be meeting up with you to keep you updated on current educational issues and polices and our school’s directions. More details on MPS 1 will be provided in a separate letter closer to the date of the session.

4.2 School Security Measures We have put in place measures that place our pupils’ safety and security as top priority to maintain a conducive learning environment for all our pupils and staff. These measures apply to everyone entering the school or waiting in the school grounds.

• Please report to the general office and obtain a visitor’s pass if you have an official appointment with a member of the school staff.
