School Report 2013-2014
Our School A Brief Introduction
A ceremony laying the foundation stone of our school building was held on 21January 1975. Classes
started in September 1978 when we temporarily used classrooms in the Yuen Long Chamber of Commerce No.
2 Primary School, until 1st April 1979 when we moved into the present school building. The opening ceremony
of the school building was held on 23rd October 1979.
The School Management Board was established before September 1978. The term of the first School
Supervisor, Mr. TANG Tung-kwong, started from September 1978, until Mr. CHOI Chong-yip took over as the
second School Supervisor in January 1994. Mr. CHENG For became the third School Supervisor starting from
March 1997, and from April 2004 Mr. TANG Kwok-sun became School Supervisor till March 2010. The
present School Supervisor is Mr. TAI Yiu-wah. The first School Principal was Mr. TIU Pui-kwong who took
office from 1978, and Ms NG Lai-wah took over upon his retirement on 1st September 2002.
The school established the Incorporated Management Committee on the 1st April 2011. Led by the school
supervisor, the IMC consisted of stake-holders of school managers, including parent, teacher and alumni
managers.
School Type
Our school is a government subsidized whole-day EMI co-educational secondary school, established by
the Yuen Long Merchants Association in September 1978. There were eight S.1 classes in the first year, and
gradually increased to 30 classes in September 1984 (the structure then consisted of six classes each in S.1, S.2
and S.3, four classes each in S.4 and S.5, and two classes each in S.6 and S.7). From September 1998 to July
2004, the school ran 29 classes from S.1 to S.7 (the structure consisted of five classes in each level from S.1 to
S.5, and two classes each in S.6 and S.7). From September 2004 to July 2009, the school ran 30 classes again as
the Education Bureau allocated one more class to our school as a one-off plan to cater for the excessive number
of S.1 students in Yuen Long. In 2009-2010 and 2011-2012, there were 29 classes of students from S.1 to S.7
with five classes in each level from S.1 to S.5 and two classes each in S.6 and S.7.

School Report 2013-2014
Achievements and Reflection on Major Concerns The two Major Concerns cater to the needs and development of the school, as well as those of the students.
The school, subject and department programmes have aligned with the two major concerns. The school has
made good use of the process of ‘Planning-Implementation-Evaluation’ (PIE) for sustained development and
self-improvement.
First Major Concern:
To develop students’ academic potential, facilitate their academic pursuit & enhance their
academic performance
1.1 To enhance students’ self-directed learning habits towards subject knowledge and current
issues
Most of our subjects emphasize pre-lesson preparation and many teachers encourage
students to take notes and raise questions during and after lessons and ask students to do
corrections to improve their learning performances. Many classes form after-school study
groups and senior form students are encouraged to make better use of the Resource Library.
Subjects including English, Mathematics and science subjects encourage students to use the
on-line programmes and resource materials in the e-class to consolidate their knowledge and
skills. Chinese and Liberal Studies require students to read newspapers and journals to learn
about current issues.
1.2 To enhance good learning skills
Subject departments designed subject-based learning activities to develop selected learning
strategies. The Science subjects have promoted the scientific investigatory skills by project
work and practical works. The PSHE KLA trains students to equip them with the ability and
confidence to share and express their views from different perspectives. With the Refined
English Enhancement Scheme (REES), learning and teaching packages have been designed
to help students learn and perform better in the English writing and Elective modules.
1.3 To enhance students’ inquiry learning attitude
The Science curriculum, pedagogy and assessment are under review to promote students’
inquiry learning attitude. Inquiry Learning Days have been organized by the Liberal Studies
Department after the examinations and Inquiry Learning activities are arranged on the OLE
Day.
1.4 To adopt subject-based strategies & programmes to cater for learners’ diversity
After school tutorial classes were arranged for S1 and S2 students nominated by class and
subject teachers, using the After School Learning Support Funds. Co-teaching was
conducted in some classes to cater for the students learning needs.
This major concern has been partly achieved. Strategic plans will be drawn to promote
students’ active learning skills, thinking skills and learning habits. More can be done to cater to
learning diversity and to train students’ self-direct learning attitudes and skills to enhance
effectiveness and confidence in learning. Also, enhancement measures for high-fliers can be
further developed to extend students’ ability to the full to excel their performance in HKDSE.
In addition to attending PD training sessions organized by EDB and other institutions,
more collaborative teaching meetings will be conducted and staff development workshops will be
run to enhance learning and teaching capacities. Teachers will be encouraged to employ more
vigorously questioning techniques that promote high-order thinking and to provide more
opportunities for guided peer interaction of students to promote peer learning and collaboration.
Resources will be deployed and extra manpower will be hired to provide more support to
our students and increase teachers’ space for teaching capacity.
School Report 2013-2014
Second Major Concern:
To enhance our students’ whole-person development to meet the challenges of an
ever-changing world
2.1 A stronger motivation & initiative to gain better personal growth
Our students have taken a more active part and won different awards in external activities
and competitions. These include academic, sports, arts, leadership training and community
services. For example, five of our senior form students performed as well as their
counterparts in other well-established schools and successfully completed the Hong Kong
Future Pioneers Project held by the Hong Kong Outstanding Students Union.
2.2 A greater sense of responsibility, respect and self-management
The Counselling and Guidance Department are running self-management programmes for
different levels. Prefects and house captains are provided with training schemes and
empowered to run programmes on their own while more student leaders are nominated to
participate in external training courses and to take part in open competitions.
2.3 Appreciation of rational value judgment, healthy living & holistic development
Health Education talks and seminars are arranged and a Whole Personal Development Week
was organized in November 2012 during which a couple of Moral Education, Health and
Civic Education have been held. Seminars were held especially to help students cope and
manage stress. The S1 Pot Plant Scheme was successfully organized to promote whole class
collaborative spirit, healthy living and environmental protection while raising funds for a
charity.
2.4 Care for others, our community, our nation & the environment
Various social and community services have been arranged by different uniform groups and
the Interact Club. The Environmental Ambassadors have actively run a whole-school project
to urge the students to go environmentally friendly. The Geography and prefects promoted
successfully at school the Environmental One Hour Project.
2.5 A broader horizon and an enthusiastic, positive life attitude
Our school has organized a series of programmes to guide students to set their careers goals.
They include Multiple Pathways talks for students and parents, seminars and talks on local,
Mainland and overseas study opportunities, subject and curriculum selection talks and
individual guidance. Two Australian Learning Workshops on ‘Aviation Human Factors and
Accident Investigation’ and ‘Forensic Biotechnology Investigation’ conducted by lecturers
from the universities from Australia were organized and they received very positive
feedbacks from the students as they were relevant to what they had learnt from their science
classes and expanded their knowledge and they experienced the teaching style of the
Australian university. The President of Asia Pacific Region of Starbucks and the CEO of the
JAHK together with 40 business volunteers from Starbucks conducted and led our students
in a Success Skills Workshop to develop the communication and teamwork skills that can
help students to excel in school, careers, and the community. As well, a Careers Day was
held with the support of our alumni and a Mock HKDSE Workshop was organized before
the release of the HKDSE results. These activities aim to broaden our students’ horizon and
encourage them to develop an enthusiastic, positive life attitude and set their careers goals
This major concern has been largely achieved. Most of the projects and measures are
implemented smoothly and the majority of students have discipline and a strong sense of
belonging to the school.
Yet, students’ self-management skills and self-discipline will still be a major concern for
enhancement though we are proud of our students who are highly self-disciplined, attentive,
showing positive interest in learning, keenly participating in lessons and engaged in learning
tasks, competent and hard-working, displaying self-confidence, good leadership skills and
School Report 2013-2014
enthusiastic in serving the school and the needy in the greater community. Students needing more
attention and support will be trained with those of higher abilities so that more peer learning can
be adopted and a more collaborative atmosphere will be resulted. Support for S1 students to help
them fit into the school culture and develop a sense of belonging to the school will remain a key
measure.
Apart from the two major concerns, we will explore and adopt a wider repertoire of
effective learning and teaching strategies to support students’ diverse leaning needs and
encourage more guided peer interaction supported by adequate scaffolding. To further enhance
interaction and students’ participation in class, our teachers will adopt appropriate and effective
approaches to motivate students to give responses and have keen participation in class and in
learning.
The school will continue to enhance learning and teaching effectiveness by peer lesson
observation and organize cross-KLA professional sharing on classroom pedagogy to further
enhance teachers’ internal capacity building.
Above all, the school will strengthen monitoring and co-ordination of work in different
committees and departments at school level and the effective implementation of the relevant
strategies at class level.
School Report 2013-2014
Our Learning and Teaching
Our teachers are allocated work and duties based on their specialization and strengths so that they can fully
utilize what they are best at. They are also encouraged to set students good examples of life-long learning by
attending seminars and courses themselves. Besides, our school emphasizes the cultivation of a positive and
ambitious attitude in our students. Through various regular curricula, learning programmes and extra-curricular
activities, we aim to provide for our students different learning opportunities to explore and develop their
potential and foster thinking, analytical, numerical, creativity and communication skills.
Most of our subjects emphasize pre-lesson preparation and many teachers encourage students to take notes
and raise questions during and after lessons and ask students to do corrections to improve their learning
performances. Many classes form after-school study groups and senior form students are encouraged to make
better use of the Resource Library.
Subjects including English, Mathematics and science subjects encourage students to use the on-line
programmes and resource materials in the e-class to consolidate their knowledge and skills. Chinese and Liberal
Studies require students to read newspapers and journals to learn about current issues.
Collaborative teaching and the peer observation schemes have been implemented in many of the subject
departments these years. This encourages professional sharing and assists in the evaluation and development of
teaching and learning approaches. This aims to enhance the efficacy of learning and teaching and attain the
school goal of quality education for our students.
To promote the concept that language is best taught through the whole school approach in which all
teachers have a role to play in students’ English language development and to enhance professional
collaboration between the English department and other subject department, the school has completed the
DOLACEE programme of the EDB that aims at helping subject teachers to teach their subject matters in
English effectively. As a long-term policy, the school organizes various activities that provide an environment
and an atmosphere that enhances the use of English in the school campus. Many subjects have devised
subject-based glossary and data bank to include working language to teach students the language they need to
use in understanding and answering questions of their subjects.
Subject departments designed subject-based learning activities to develop selected learning strategies. The
Science subjects have promoted the scientific investigatory skills by project work and practical works. The
PSHE KLA trains students to equip them with the ability and confidence to share and express their views from
different perspectives. With the Refined English Enhancement Scheme (REES), learning and teaching packages
have been designed to help students learn and perform better in the English writing and Elective modules.
To help our students lay a stable and solid foundation in language subjects, we organize English and
Chinese remedial classes for S.2 and S.3 students. A Pre-secondary One Summer Bridging course is designed
and offered to all S.1 students so that they can better adapt to learning in an EMI school and be equipped with
the language skills.
In addition to the school curricula, our school has implemented the following learning programmes for the
enhancement of the academic attainments of our students:
1. Enrichment classes for more able students and remedial classes for less able students are operated to
offer extra support so that their academic results can be enhanced.
2. The NET of the school leads a variety of English activities to promote students’ interest in English.
Additional speaking training sessions are organized to prepare senior form students for the HKDSE oral
examinations. Our NET teacher also runs extra training sessions to enhance our public speaking skills in
both junior and senior form students.
3. To enhance their English language skills in reading, writing, listening and speaking, the school has
offered an English free on-line Self-access Learning programme, the English Builder, for all S1 to S6
students. This programme is sponsored by the school funds.
School Report 2013-2014
4. Our school has also participated in the New Territories West Elite Student Training Scheme: we receive
a sum of $150,000 from the Sun Hung Kai Properties Charitable Funds Ltd. every year to sponsor
programmes for the enhancement of students’ performance in different aspects.
5. A tutorial scheme sponsored by the Sun Hung Kai Properties Charitable Funds Ltd. is organized for S.1
to S.6 students on Saturdays. The School-based After School Learning and Support Programme
provided additional support for financially needy students who joined the tutorial scheme.
6. Another on-line English Enhancement programme subsidized by Sun Hung Kai Properties Charitable
Funds Ltd. was organized during the summer vacation to all S1 to S.6 students to promote students’
interest in learning English and improve their English language skills.
7. Inter-class English oral practice was arranged in the hall for senior forms. Students with mixed abilities
were grouped together and an authentic situation was created for them to have better preparation for the
Oral Examination. Three sessions had been successfully run.
8. Senior Form students were arranged to give presentations in English and in Chinese at weekly school
assemblies so as to enhance their language and communication skills, as well as to prepare them for the
public examinations and boost their confidence.
9. Two collections of students’ writings, one in English and the other in Chinese, were published last
school year. To encourage students to write more and to enhance their interest in writing and their
writing skills, the school plans to publish other collections this year.
10. To provide additional support and better prepare our students for HKDSE, various subject departments
and many subject teachers conducted tutorial lessons during the school holidays and summer vacation
for S4, S5 and S6 students.
11. A Mathematics school team was formed by S1 and S2 students recruited at the beginning of the school
term to train for inter-school mathematics competitions. Training sessions were held twice a week for S1
to S3 students and those with outstanding potential will be nominated to The Hong Kong Academy for
Gifted Education for further Mathematics enhancement courses. For elite and interested students, the
school nominates them to join courses in Chinese University and Hong Kong University of Science and
Technology. For students needing financial support, the school arranges to apply for funds to support the
tuition fees and travelling allowance.
12. Phonetics was included in the junior English curriculum to equip students with a useful life-long
learning skill and to enhance English learning.
13. The subject of Life and Society of S3 consisted of school-based learning and teaching resources and the
contents were in line with ‘Life and Society’ Curriculum – Strand 5 of PSHE Curriculum & Mass Media
and Corruption’ in NSS Liberal Studies; the design of the curriculum matched with Economics’
Department’s Major Concern to instill in students self-learning motivation and skills.
14. Morning Reading Session -- -- On every regular school day, from 8:40 am – 8:55am, all students are
required to read English or Chinese books, newspapers or educational magazines silently in classrooms.
Reading sharing sessions were held by the Library Club during lunch hours.
15. The Economics Department ran a Mentorship Programme under which more capable students from S5
were recruited to meet regularly needy students in S4 to provide practical help in the study of
Economics. The programme received positive feedback from both mentors and mentees.
Besides, the school utilizes the following resources to foster students’ learning:
1. The school always encourages students to make as fully as possible adequate use of the school learning
environment and facilities. A self-study room, in addition to the school library, is open for the use of
students for study and revision.
2. The Parents and Teachers Association, in addition to strengthening the link between parents and teachers,
provides welfare funds and assistance to help the school improve facilities and implement various
learning programmes and extra-curricular activities.
3. With the support from the PTA, the school arranges all the S3 and S4 students to participate in the
English verse-speaking, prose reading and/or public speaking competitions in the Hong Kong Schools
Speech Festival so that these students all have a chance to take part in public competitions in English
and this helps to increase their students in learning English and improve their English speaking skills
and boost their confidence in speaking in public. Apart from these two levels, all other students taking
School Report 2013-2014
part in the Hong Kong Schools Speech Festivals and Music Festivals and sponsored by the school funds.
This releases the parents burden of supporting the students’ joining fees.
4. With the Senior Secondary Curriculum Support Grant, the school runs a Resource Library especially for
the use of the S6 students to facilitate their preparation for the Examination. Practice papers and
examination skills reference books are provided and teaching assistants are to provide extra support.
5. The school offers many internal scholarships and recommends students for external scholarships and
grants to encourage students to study hard or complete their studies.
6. Students with outstanding performance or potential in leadership, mathematics, sciences or humanities
are nominated to join the Hong Kong Academy for Gifted Education to nurture and develop their
potential and talents.
7. A Drama course was sponsored by the Sun Hung Kei Charitable Educational Funds and the After-school
Learning and Support Programme for students keen in drama to enhance their English speaking skills
and drama skills. The group won prizes in the English Fest and the Hong Kong Schools Drama Festival.
8. With Diversity Learning Grant, the After School Learning and Support Grant as well as the Refined
English Enhancement Scheme (REES), an English musical programme was run this year to develop and
enhance students’ various artistic talent and skills. It also improved their English language skills and
boosted their confidence. The musical was successfully staged in Yuen Long Theatre on the OLE Day
and received very positive feedback from students and teachers. A similar Musical programme will also
be run in the coming year.
9. The school encourages and supports students from families with lower income to take an active part in
extra-curricular activities and learning programmes, using the funding from the Sun Hung Kei
Charitable Educational Funds, the After-school Learning and Support Programme and the Diversity
Learning Grant.
10. The school applied successfully applied for a Mainland trip to be organized in the summer holiday but
due to the wide-spread of infectious diseases in Mainland in April, the plan was cancelled. The school
has planned to apply again for other trips in the coming year.

School Report 2013-2014
Support for Student Development The school has actively explored and tapped external resources to enhance the efficacy in learning and
teaching. This year, we have successfully applied and will receive a matching grant of $300,000 from the
Quality Education Fund Steering Committee to improve the information technology facilities of the school and
to provide quality education for our students.
To explore students’ potential and foster their generic skills, the school has implemented the following
student development programmes by drawing in external resources:
1. For moral education, the school has been granted the Whole Personal Education Funds to launch the ‘I
CAN’ Whole Person Programme and through ‘personality functioning’ students were to nurture and
confirm their self-value and to have a healthy growth.
2. The Pastoral Care Committee launches the Harmonious School policy, pooling in external support from
the Education Bureau, Tin Long Centre of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Hong Kong, Yuen Long
Secondary School Heads Association, Yuen Long Police and the Civil Aid Service. School-based
leadership programmes included the Smart Teen Challenge Camp of the Enhanced Smart Teen Project
jointly organized by the Education Bureau and Civil Aid Service, Joint school prefect training camp, joint
school anti-drug prefect training programme and Yuen Long Student Ambassador Programme.
3. The English Department successfully applied for EDB’s Refined English Enhancement Scheme (REES) to
implement different English projects. Learning and teaching packages were designed to enhance the
English learning and teaching in senior forms.
4. To further develop students’ English public speaking skills and foster students’ self-confidence, the English
Department provided training and arranged for each of the S3 and S5 entries into the English
verse-speaking and public speaking competitions in the Hong Kong Schools Speech Festival, thanks to the
sponsorship of the Parent-teacher Association.
5. A Success Skills Workshop was co-organized by the Achievement Hong Kong (JAHK) and Starbucks
Coffee Company on the 29th April 2013 for more than 110 of our senior form students. Mr. Jinlong Wang,
the President of Asia Pacific Region, shared his experiences as the key-note speaker at the opening of
Workshop with Miss Vivian Lau, the CEO of the JAHK. 40 business volunteers from Starbucks conducted
and led our students in the various interactive and fun activities.
The workshop aims to develop the communication and teamwork skills that can help students to excel in
school, careers, and the community. The workshops received very positive feedbacks from the students as
they learnt to appreciate the importance of interpersonal skills through the interactive and developmental
activities led by the business volunteers.
6. With the financial support from the Sun Hung Kei Charitable Funds and After School Support Funds,
Mock Trial training sessions were organized for members of the Mock Trial Club.
Fourteen S4 and S5 members of the Mock Trial Club participated in the Moot Court Competition for Hong
Kong Secondary School Students 2012-2013 launched by the Education Bureau, Rotary Club of the New
Territories, the IVE Business Administration Tuen Mun and Morrison Hill Campus and Hong Kong
Association for Business Education. Around 300 teachers and students from 30 schools attended the
training workshops and the Competitions. Prominent professionals including Mr. Duffy Wong and Mr.
Anthony Hung formed a team of 9 independent judges to assess students’ performances in the
competitions.
