Over the Memorial Day weekend, the Yankee U-16 Stars won theirsecond major tournament title ofthe Spring season, going 4-0-0 overthree days of play. They began itwith an explosive offense andconcluded it with a smothering

defense, relying on their midfielders for support inboth of these endeavors.

The Stars scored 5 goals and yielded just 2 en

route to a win over the Hershey Crush (E-PA) ingame one. In game two, theydefeated Baltimore Bays(MD) by a score of 3-1.Assured of qualifying for thefinal on Monday, a morerelaxed approach earned theStars their only shut-out ofthe tournament with a 2-0victory over U.S. ParmaDapprima, setting the stagefor a show-down with Region1 powerhouse USP OceanEagles.

Under sunny skies, in hot and humid conditions, the two finalists battled to a scoreless tie in the first

half. Each teamhad chances toscore, and eachattempt wasthwarted by theopposingdefenses. In the

second half, theplay began toreflect theweatherconditions withdefenses and

midfielders starting to tire. Just five minutes in, theOcean Eagles lifted a corner kick high in front of theStars goal and a scrum ensued in the crowd of players

in front of the net. After several blockedshots, one found itsway to the back ofthe Stars net in whatlooked to be thedecisive score of thechampionship game.As the half wore on,two Stars players had

to be helped from thefieldwithcrampsand dehydration starting to take theirtoll.

The Stars continued to pressure theOcean Eagles and forced a corner kickwith just 15 minutes left in the game.Returning the favor from the earlierscore, the Stars sent the kick sailing tothe far post into a swarm of playersfrom both sides. Forward ShawniqueSamuels shot the ball into the crowd

only to have it cleared back in her direction. Hersecond shot found its way to the back corner of theEagles net for the tying score.

The two teams continued to battle forpossession but it was fast becoming apparent thatthe final outcome would be determined by PKs atthe end of regulation. When that time came, theStars outshot them 4-3 to win the title.

A famous soccer philosopheronce pondered the timelessrhetorical question: Is it too

much to ask to win the games inwhich you dominate? Fairquestion, far simpler answer: youstill need to put the ball in theback of the net.

The Strikers learned that lesson in spades at theColumbia Invitational. The team played its bestsoccer of the year, dominated in possession againstall three of its opponents, but with a bid for thefinals on the line came up short in the one categorythat ultimately decides the outcome of games:

    scoring.

The Strikers opened thetournament with a 2-1 win over the SmithtownKickers, scoring two goals early in the second halfto put the game out of reach. Just two minutes in,Eliza Paltauf took a pass from Aimee Manderlink, spun around the last defender and found herselfone-on-one with the keeper. She promptly drilledthe ball to the keepers right to help the Strikers to a1-0 lead. Five minutes later, Manderlink crossed theball inside the 18 where the Smithtown keepermoved to get it. She spied an oncoming Strikers

forward, Katie Faryniarz, took her eye offthe ballmomentarily which caused her to leave it slightlybehind her fingertips, allowing Faryniarz to gainpossession and carefully place a shot into a wide-open net.

In game two, the Strikers outplayed the WestChester Renegades for the entire game but failed tocapitalize on the many scoring opportunities theycreated. The game appeared headed to a scoreless

tie, when West Chester was given a free kick fromjust outside thethe PK area with

just 7 minutesleft. The hard hitball was bobbledby the Strikerskeeper and shotinto an open goalby an on-rushingWest Chesterplayer to notch asurprise win.

    With the loss,

the Strikers knew they needed a shut-out and a goaldifferential of at least two against local favorite

Frederick FC (VA), coupled with a West Chesterloss to Smithtown, in order to have any chance ofmaking the final. They held up their end of thebargain with a 2-0 victory over Frederick. Early inthe first half, midfielder Carly Cugine shot the ballhard from just outside the PK area and watched asit deflected offa defender and into the goal. Eightminutes later, Cugine lifted a ball arcing over theFrederick midfielders to Olivia Reyes who dribbleddown a wide-open right side of the field. As the

keeper came out to cut down the angle, Reyes shotthe ball high grazing over her fingertips settling justjust inside the far post. In the second half, theStrikers relentlessly fired balls in the direction ofthe Frederick net but were unable to add to theirlead. It was all for naught, however, as it was laterreported that West Chester won its third game andadvanced to the final.

I am very pleased with the quality of play. Wedominated possession but were not able to finishthe way we would like to. said Coach JackNogueira. It is the nature of soccer, that the bestteam does not always win and I felt we were betterthan the three teams we played this weekend. However the scoreboard doesnt reflect that. Thelesson here is that you have to make the most ofevery opportunity you have to score. The team thatdoes that consistently always has a great chance towin.
