Eid Milad-un-Nabi —the holy birthday ofProphet Muhammad(pbuh) — falls on November10 this year, which is knownas the 12th Rabi’ ul-Awwalaccording to the Hijri calen-

    dar. Howev-er, ShiaM u s l i m s ,who equallyv e n e r a t eand cele-brate theP r o p h e t ’s

birthday, celebrate it on the17th Rabi’ ul-Awwal.

Significantly, this occa-sion is marked by dissemina-tion of the true, essential anduniversal teachings ofProphet Muhammad (pbuh).Besides taking out the julusprocessions and paradesconsisting of large crowdsall day long, Muslims in In-dia organise gatherings ofwhat they call Milad Sha-reef.

The traditional recitersof Milad, popularly knownas milad khwans, beautifullyexplain the Sirah (lifetimeand message) of the Prophet(pbuh). They recount mov-ing moral and ethical storiesfrom the Prophet’s lifewhich stress his noblest per-sonality traits such as beingtruthful (al-sadiq), trustwor-

thy (al-amin) and generous(al-Sakhi). The most re-markable Prophetic charac-ter in which he is personifiedas “Rahmatul lil A’lamin”(mercy for all worlds) be-comes the theme of mostspiritual discourses on thisoccasion. A former RomanCatholic nun and practition-er of a mystical Christianpath, Karen Armstrong, wrote one of the best bookson the life of the Prophet(pbuh) Muhammad: AProphet for Our Time.

She avers that ProphetMuhammad’s actual teach-ings are more relevant todaythan ever before, because“they offer crucial insightinto the true origins of themisinterpreted and increas-ingly radicalised version ofIslam”.

Countering those whowrongly attribute to theProphet (pbuh) a fanatical, retrogressive, misogynistand violent narrative of thefaith, Ms Armstrong offereda moderate portrait of theProphet (pbuh) and de-scribes him as a “compas-sionate messenger” wholived a wholly merciful life.

On the occasion of EidMilad-un-Nabi, we need torevisit the true propheticpersonality traits that we of-ten overlook. We should par-ticularly recall the Prophet’s

mercifulness for allmankind, besides his truth-fulness, forgiveness, gen-erosity and magnanimity. The milad khwans must alsodwell on how gently theProphet (pbuh) treated peo-ple of other faith-traditionson different historical occa-sions, especially with the pa-gans of the Makkah duringthe Hudybiya peace treaty, the Jews of Madina, Chris-tians of Najran and Habsha(Avicenna), and even thosewho professed no conven-tional belief.

One of those movingmoments was when theProphet (pbuh) was sittingwith a group of his compan-ions and a Jewish funeralpassed by. He stood up in re-spect of the deceased soul. But some of his companions, who had recently embracedIslam, asked him: “O Mes-senger of Allah, why did youstand up for the funeral of aJew who used to live in de-nial of your message?” TheProphet replied: “Wasn’t hea human soul?”

With his mercy and mag-nanimity for all people of re-ligions, Prophet Muhammad(pbuh) rejuvenated the com-passionate messages of allprevious prophets of God,and therefore, he is called“Rahmatul lil A’lamin”(mercy for all the worlds).

YUGMARG, CHANDIGARH, MONDAY, NOVEMBER 11, 2019

The Supreme Court of India appeared to follow its ownprecedent of “satisfying the collective conscience of so-ciety” in settling the Ayodhya title case and declaring thedisputed 2.77 acres as belonging to Lord Ram. The court es-sentially threw out the 2010 Allahabad high court trifurcationof the disputed site on the grounds that the 2010 order was self-contradictory (it said one of the parties had exceeded the timeof limitations, and then awarded that same party a share in thethree parts). Its justification was that from before 1856, whenthe British Raj erected a wall-grill outside the mosque that leadto inter-communal riots, it was clear that Hindus had been wor-shipping the area as Lord Ram’s birthplace. The only thing thatpuzzled the court is what happened in the 400 years betweenthe time when a Hindu structure was archeologically found tolast exist in the spot, and the time Babur erected the mosque.

It is a settlement that will satisfy majoritarian India — it isakin to the reincarnation of the Ram Temple for the hardcoredevout — though one wonders if the majority of the majoritycommunity will feel anything more than indifference to the res-olution of this 70-year-old dispute (or 165-year-old, or 400year-old dispute, depending on whom you talk to). Religion issaid to be the opiate of the masses, but from most the reactionis one of exhaustion or ennui, their attention only momentari-ly deflected from the increasing despair over the deterioratingeconomy that was sunk in no small part by the needless andnutty demonetisation almost exactly three years ago.

One consolation is that in the entire history of the BabriMasjid’s existence, from 1528 to 1992, the Supreme Courtfound three instances of law-breaking: the 1934 attack on themosque, which lessened the frequency of prayers by Muslims;the 1949 placement of idols inside the mosque, which led to ashutdown of even Friday prayers; and the December 6, 1992,demolition of the masjid. This last observation should help inthe criminal case against those who conspired to demolish themosque, the judgment of which is due to happen next spring.

The court decided that the Muslims would be compensat-ed with five acres — nearly twice the disputed area — in aplace to be decided by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Cen-tral government within the larger 67 acres at the site, or by chiefminister Yogi Adityanath’s state government within the city ofAyodhya. It is to happen at the same time the disputed area ishanded over to a trust that the government will appoint to con-struct the Ram temple. This consolation prize can hardly pleasethe Indian Muslim — it is an apt metaphor for the forced evic-tion and ghettoisation that the community has faced since De-cember 1992. But what is the Indian Muslim to do? When the“collective conscience of society” had to be satisfied with the2013 hanging of Afzal Guru for his role in the 2001 Parliamentattack — a case that was tenuous at best — then the KashmiriMuslim was helpless.

Born to Mehta Kalu andMata Tripta in NankanaSahib on April 15, 1469,in Nankana Saheb, Lahore inPakistan, Guru Nanak Dev jiMaharaj is the founder of oneof the youngest religions of theworld-Sikhism. Guru NanakDev, whose 550th birth an-niversary is being celebratednow, became the first SikhGuru and his spiritual teach-ings laid the foundation onwhich Sikhism was formed.

Incidentally all the tenSikh Gurus were Khatris: GuruNanak was a Bedi, Guru An-gad was a Trehan, Guru AmarDas was a Bhalla, and the re-mainder were Sodhis. Duringthe lifetime of the Gurus, mostof their major supporters werealso Khatris by caste.

Sikhism emphasises onthe importance of leading aspiritual life without embrac-ing monasticism. It teaches itsfollowers to escape the clutch-es of ordinary human traits, such as lust, rage, greed, at-tachment and conceit (collec-tively known as the ‘FiveThieves’).

Sikhism is a monotheisticreligion, which believes thatGod is shapeless, timeless andinvisible. It also teaches theconcepts of worldly illusion(Maya), Karma, and liberation. Some of the key practices ofSikhism are meditation and therecitation of Gurbani, thehymns composed by the Gu-rus. The religion also advo-

cates justice and equality andurges its followers to servemankind.

Sikkhism spread rapidly inIndia and the world after thedeath of Guru Nanak Dev Ji inKartarpur Sahib. his Sikh Pop-ulation in the India is around2.44 crore and in the wporldaround 27 million. This makesSikhs 0.39 per cent of theworld population. Out of these27 million approximately 83per cent live in India with 76per cent of all Sikhs living inPunjab. This is the only statewhere Sikhs are in the majori-ty in India. A visionary and agreat soul, Guru Nanak Dev jiwas a great spiritual thinker.

His religious ideas draw onboth Hindu and Islamicthoughts. At the same timethey are also unique in theirown right.

The great saint started dis-playing signs of his greatnessearly on in childhood. Even asa boy he used to spend longhours in meditation and wasdeeply spiritual.

Guru Nanak Dev ques-tioned the rituals his familyperformed in the name of reli-gion and did not participate inthem. His belief eventuallyshocked his parents and theytried to involve him in worldlymatters. But the kind-heartedyoung boy distributed his fa-

ther’s money to the poor andneedy. Even an arranged mar-riage at an early age did notprevent Guru Nanak frommoving on the spiritual path.Eventually he went on to foundSikhism, a monotheistic reli-gion which advocates the con-cept of the oneness of God.

He travelled far and wide, mostly on foot, spreading themessage of oneness of Godwho dwells in all living beings.Considered a religious innova-tor, Guru Nanak travelled onfoot across South Asia andMiddle East to spread his mes-sage of oneness of God whodwells in all living beings. Headvocated the existence of one

God and taught his followersthat every human being canreach out to God through med-itation and other pious prac-tices.

His teachings were im-mortalized in the form of 974hymns, which came to beknown as ‘Guru GranthSahib,’ the holy text ofSikhism. In 1475, Nanak's sis-ter got married to Jai Ram andshe moved to Sultanpur. Nanakwanted to stay with his sisterfor a few days and hence wentto Sultanpur and started work-ing under the employer of hisbrother-in-law. During his stayin Sultanpur, Nanak would goto a nearby river every morn-ing in order to bathe and med-

itate. One fine day, he went tothe river as usual but did not re-turn for three days. It is be-lieved that Nanak went deepinside the forest and stayedthere. When he returned, helooked like a man possessedand did not utter a word. Whenhe finally spoke, he said,“There is no Hindu and noMusalman.” These words werethe beginning of his teachingswhich would culminate in theformation of a new religion.

Nanak then came to beknown as Guru Nanak(teacher) as he travelled far andwide to spread his teachings. He founded Sikhism, one ofthe youngest religions, throughhis teachings.

The Great Saint Guru Nanak Dev ji whogave message of peace and brotherhood

Prophet Muhammad —The messenger of mercy Though more than half ofmy life has gone bysince the fateful events

of December 6, 1992, memo-ries of the day are as vivid asit was yesterday. I hadclimbed up the biggest of theguava trees in our courtyard, and had already consumedone of the fruits and eyeinganother ripe one just out ofreach when I heard the newswafting over the air, from aradio blaring in a neighbour-hood home.

My ears could hear thenewsreader saying somethingabout “extensive damage” toone of the domes of the BabriMasjid. It was too stunning, too unbelievable.

Safely ensconced in aneighbourhood that was pre-dominantly Muslim, I was tooyoung to realise the signifi-cance of what had transpired.Still, a sudden, indescribabledarkness enveloped me. Theonly other time I experienceda similar darkness was whenmy father passed away.

Hyderabad, especially theOld City, had in its historyseen and withstood commu-nal riots, it had withstood aninvasion, and before that aflood that took the life ofthousands. But never athreshold such as this hadbeen crossed, never had ourfaith been crushed, nor hadthe faith of others trampled, subverted and vanquished thelaw. Curiously, nobody ranout on the streets, there was

no slogan shouting, there wasno outward reaction as such.Perhaps everyone in my lo-cality was too stunned to re-act. Or perhaps they did notknow how to react, since thiswas something unimaginable, unprecedented and like a boltfrom the blue. By dusk, theroads were empty and theonly movement was of straydogs. Every home that had aTV was crowded with neigh-bours; ears were glued to theradio, hoping to catch any andall news.

At 9 pm that day, Door-darshan repeated what had al-ready been claimed over theradio — “extensive damageto one of the domes of theBabri Masjid”. A dour-look-ing P.V. Narasimha Rao cameon TV, and we heard himpromise that the masjidwould be rebuilt at that very

spot. I remember the words“President’s Rule” being im-posed in Uttar Pradesh afterKalyan Singh resigned andhis government was dis-missed. I remember curfewbeing imposed the next day.Like all other times curfewwas imposed earlier, wevaulted over the wall and ontoour neighbour’s terrace wherethe men used to play domi-noes or carrom.

In the days that followed, the discussion invariably was“what next”. In my locality, the Muslim Personal LawBoard, and especially the sit-ting MP from Hyderabad,Sultan Salauddin Owaisi, was declared guilty of failingto protect the masjid. The“guilty” label was ultimatelyerased when he swore on theHoly Quran after Fridayprayers in the Macca Masjid

that he was innocent and avictim of circumstances.

P.V. Narasimha Rao wascursed, and was branded astooge of the RSS. Someeven said that under his dhoti,he used to wear the famousRSS knickers. Though manyMuslims may not openly sayit, Narasimha Rao remainsthe most reviled of all Con-gress leaders, years after hisdeath.

Ironically, the Hinducommunity at large was nev-er blamed; it was only theleaders of the BJP and P.V.Narasimha Rao who werecursed. As days went by, thecommunity began feeling theimpact of the aftermath. TheMumbai riots that followed, and the increasingly vitrioliccomments by Shiv Senaleader Bal Thackeray, left usshaken. Thackeray’s vitriol

ensured that there would beno negotiated settlement vis-a-vis the Babri Masjid, sinceevery Muslim believed that afirm stand alone could stopHindutva’s onward march.

I remember reading a re-port by a Muslim columnisthow he was shunned at a pub-lic meeting. I also remembera columnist, I believe it wasShobhaa De, writing in theDeccan Chronicle how in ca-sual conversations at parties,Muslims were being insinuat-ed as “they” or “them”, as ifwe were second-class citi-zens. Till December 6, 1992,despite numerous riots, Mus-lims in Hyderabad, especial-ly in the Old City, had neverfelt unsafe. Perhaps it was be-cause the Old City had al-ways been predominantlyMuslim, or perhaps becausethe riots were limited topockets and it was businessas usual after the flare-upssubsided.

The demolition of theBabri Masjid left us, like allMuslims across India, shakento the core. Our trust in theConstitution, our belief in thesystem, our conviction in ourloyalty to this country, our re-liance on the official machin-ery being our shield, were allrazed that day. We began tofeel alienated, and for thefirst time, victimised in ourown land. The BJP’s politicalascendancy in the days thatfollowed strengthened thisfeeling.
