Truism #93 The trouble with the rat race is that even if you win,

you are still a rat. -Lily Tomlin

Editorial - from the Cave - Wayne Stuart

As the old saying goes – “The more things change, the more they stay the same”. Well, after our AGM, we have a new Committee – but we still have a Committee and some of them are still the same. Congratulations to our new Committeemen and welcome back to the trusty long-termers. We seem to have major projects and funding success to allow those projects to happen emerging all over the place. At the end of this frenetic activity, I expect we will have a very comfortable and fully equipped bolt hole for the men of Yass. I am a bit hopeful that the coming year might be a tad more relaxed and give the “movers and shakers” a bit of an opportunity to slow down, smell the roses and simply enjoy without the constant need to be moving onward and upward. As good old Socrates once said: “He who is not contented with what he has would not be contented with what he does not have”. Thank you for re-electing me for another year. I enjoy the Secretary role and will try to find new ways to annoy and entertain you all in the next 12 months.

On the other hand, none of us is immortal and no one knows the hour. So, as a bit of strategic planning, if anyone out there would like to look over any of the Committee roles with a view to putting up your hand next year – come and talk to me or one of the other Committee members. Message from the President - Bob Nash

Here is Bob’s Report to the 2018 AGM – it bears repeating, I think:

“The past twelve months has been a very busy time for the Shed. With construction of the roof over the containers being carried out, many thanks have to go to Rob Barker for the design and drawing up of these plans, Yass Valley Council for the Community Grant, the Yass Soldiers Club for their generous donations together with some Shed members and business houses helping us along with their donations. We had a successful local tender for the work and he is in the midst of construction. This will be a great benefit for our infrastructure. Also during the past year we installed a sliding door to keep the wind and mess from blowing into the Shed, and it too, has been a success. Tiling of the kitchen area floor has made a huge difference in keeping the place clean. Many other small things have also been carried out to make our asset a more welcoming place. We have built a store shed at the rear of the workshop to allow the re-location of the dust extractor, water pump and all the tins of paint together with much more not every day needed stuff. Then the revamp of the workshop will make for a much safer environment for members to work around the machines. Of course the greatest reward we have had this year has been the generous grant of $20,000 given to us by the State Government. This will go to a project of installing Solar Panels and installation of Air Conditioners in our gathering room and workshop. The solar panels will fully cover the cost of electricity in the Shed and also in the Community Centre and this has been decided as a way to thank the Yass Valley Council for their generosity towards us over the past 10 years of our Shed. This being our tenth anniversary year we will be having celebrations later in the year to mark the event. I would like to thank the committee for their support during the year, without their support the shed would not function the way it has. A special thanks has to go to Wayne Stuart for his outstanding contribution to not only the way he produces the Messenger each month, but doing those many things and keeping the members up to date to what is going on with in the shed and to carry out many, many other matters without being asked to do them. This has made my job so much easier. I will be standing for the position for a third term and the last. So put your thoughts to that over the next twelve months. As I have said many times before, keep the Shed evolving, keep thinking outside the square because that's where the ideas come from to achieve one’s goals. Last but not least I thank my wife for putting up with me during this past year and helping me to keep my sanity over the next year. To all the members I SAY THANK YOU.

BOB NASH President April 2018.”

Message from the Workshop Manager – Roger Holgate No big workshop events to report this month, just the few usual few small jobs returning us a few valuable $’s. For most of this month a lot has been going on regarding using our $5000.00 grant from AMSA, specified for workshop upgrades and additions. Many hours have been spent on the computer sorting out the best way to go in consultation with the committee and engaged members.

Finally I can report that we have 5 quotes on hand and we could start to see some tools and equipment turning up as early as later this week. It could be some time before some of this gear gets commissioned but come to the shed every chance that you get and see just what is happening. Can I remind ALL MEMBERS to make sure you lock up the Containers properly after you have used them. We lost the keys this week only to find them on one of the wood racks in the Wood Storage Container after more than an hour searching the Shed and the container door had been closed and not locked. As soon as a Container is opened the key should immediately be returned to the key box.

No one would be very interested in the contents of that Container, but the Metal Shop Container is also opened by that key and contains many thousands of dollars of our assets. Roger Holgate.

2018 AGM – Saturday 14 April 2pm Once again, a land speed record was achieved in running our AGM this year – although it is important to assure our readers that no animals were lost or damaged and no illegal or other short cuts were taken in properly conducting this important meeting. We hosted two observers of our AGM representing AMSA NSW Zone 13 (our zone), namely: Neil Sperring who is president of the South Canberra Veterans Shed, and AMSA Board member for ACT, and Jim Thornton responsible for coordinating communication, support and activities for NSW Zone 13 Sheds which is bounded by Yass, Goulburn, Braidwood, Adaminaby and Bombala including the ACT. There were two important outcomes at the AGM: 1. The New Committee was voted in, namely:

Bob Nash President

Roger Holgate Vice President

Sam Noor Treasurer

Wayne Stuart Secretary

Richard Rowan Member

John Backhouse Member

John Pratten Member

The outgoing Committee members, Nicholas Londey and Mac McLean were thanked for their contributions to the good and effective running of the Shed over the last 12 months. 2. The Constitution of the Yass Valley Men’s Shed was amended to insert the following definition:

1. Definitions

(1) In this constitution:

“Association means The Yass Valley Men’s Shed which is a Not for Profit organisation”. This change will remove any doubt about our status – particularly for Government and other Grant or donation providers who concern themselves with supporting not for profit organisations. We have had to deal with this issue up to now by swearing statutory declarations – not ideal for us or them. We have registered that change with NSW Fair Trading and we have had confirmation that the change has been accepted and registered. R2 did his thing again to help us celebrate the AGM and another year together with his happy helpers. We all enjoyed some finger food and snacks with the special R2 treatment.

What has happened since the last Messenger?

Roof over the containers

Our Roof Project is now complete and we thank all of our supporters large and small who have contributed in any way, funding, provision of expertise, hands on hard work and shouts of support and encouragement from the sidelines. It is pretty fantastic and will allow us to expend our activity, provide outdoor work and play areas under cover and protected from sun and rain. You can expect a major event in the not too distant future at which we will combine the official “opening” of our new roof which will be held (hopefully on the same day as our official celebration of our 10th Anniversary year. At that event, we hope to unveil the Recognition Board on which will be inscribed the names of all the bodies, businesses and individuals who have made grants, donations and contributions to this major achievement and life changing improvement for the Shed. Stand by for announcements, news and enticements.

Jerrawa and Yass Show Gates duty Richard Rowan, Tony Warren and Wayne Stuart spent another very enjoyable day on the Jerrawa Show Gates on Easter Monday . The day passed very quickly, the entertainment provided by people (lots for Yass) going in and out and the feelgood feeling of helping a worthwhile cause all contributed to a fantastic experience. Tony brought sandwiches and forgot to share them – so took them home again! We have been promised a good donation from the Jerrawa Show Society for that effort. We have also received a very generous donation of $250.55 from the Lions Club of Yass recognising the volunteering talents of Allan Carey, Richard Rowan, Brian Millett, Roger Holgate, Stephe Jitts, Chris Smith and Grant Johnston. Thank you to those members who have helped keep the wolf from the door this month!

YVMS Shed Matters May 2018 Page | 5

The recycling facility in the Woolworths Carpark will from now on be providing a regular and steady income for the Shed. We have now received our first payment of $74.60 for the period 26 Feb to 25 March. Many thanks to all members and community friends of the Shed who have donated or transported our own collection and deposited them. We are now hoping for a steady and regular modest income from this great innovation on behalf of TOMRA Recycling. The bin in the front room is the place to put your drink cans and bottles when you have finished with them (DON”T CRUSH THE CANS!!! The receiving machine needs to be able to read bar codes, apparently). You might even be prepared to bring in the odd empty complying container from home to help the Shed raise some funds?? Would be good! Happy collecting, recycling and depositing!! Anzac Day

A number of Shed members attended the ANZAC Day services. The Shed placed a wreath at the Cenotaph in Comur Street. Rod Perceval and Alf Atkin did the honours for us this year.

"They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old; Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning

We will remember them."

Major Projects on the go

Solar Panels and Aircon in the Shed The $20,000 Grant from the NSW Coalition Government, personally presented to us by the Premier, the Hon Gladys Berejiklian and by our Local Member, the Hon Pru Goward has now arrived in our Bank Account. The Committee has met and considered 6 quotes for the two projects and has decided on the following successful tenderers: Solar Project The installation of an 11.2kW Solar facility on the Shed which will mean we no longer will have to use grid energy in the Shed (or in the Community Centre next door) has been awarded to PowerVault / Solar Farming Co Ltd, a local business recently arrived in the Yass Valley. Airconditioning project This contract has gone to Touie Smith Jnr. Neither of these decisions was easy, but local providers, value for money, solutions offered as well as warranties etc all played a part. Our congratulations to the successful tenderers and our thanks and commiserations to the tenderers who took the trouble to quote but who were unsuccessful this time. We have contacted all tenderers to advise them of the outcome as it applies to them.

AMSA ($5,000) Grant success – new equipment on the way

We have managed another Grant success – this time, $5,000 from AMSA which is distributing national funds for Men’s Sheds projects provided by the Federal Department of Transport. Our sincere thanks to AMSA and the Dept of Health! The Grants process is a bit of a competition, so we managed to survive that process and can now proceed to purchase some needed

equipment to further enhance the holdings in both workshops. Roger Holgate will now be prioritising our submitted buying list to be ready to go shopping as soon as the funds arrive in our Grants Account. Watch this space for news of new and shiny workshop goodies. New YVMS baseball caps coming Having some kind of Shed identifiable billboard that we can proudly walk around town in which promotes the Shed and also the generous donor who has made it possible, has proved a winner for us in the past. We have had the first run of baseball caps, donated by Mark Ritchard at Yass Valley Physiotherapy in the early years, all of which went like hotcakes. Those caps, in many cases, have had a hard life and are now looking very tired and second hand. We have also had a generous donation of sun hats from Peter Miller at Miller’s Pharmacy (all of which are also gone). Given we have more than a hundred members currently and more to come, it is time to do it all again. Mark Ritchard has donated $500 towards the total cost ($960) of us acquiring 100 new baseball caps which leaves us to pay the balance from Shed funds.

Mid grey with embroidered logo - $5

The Committee has decided to sell these new caps for $5 each and, given we have more than 100 current financial members, I don’t expect this new delivery to last very long. So if you would like one, bring your $5 with you and it will be yours. Don’t leave it too long. With the colder weather coming on, is anyone interested in me finding out the price of purchasing s number of Sweat Shirts or hoodies with the YVMS logo? If so I will make some inquiries and get back to you. This time you would pay what it costs us to have them made.

Thanking our supporters #6 and Final In previous Messengers, I have listed a number of major supporters (not in any order) that we benefit from at the YVMS and who are celebrated and thanked on our "Sponsor Thank You Board" on the front wall of the Shed. Here is the final listing.

Yass Fire Brigade The local Yass Fire Brigade has been a supporter over the life of the Shed in Yass. Whenever we have had a car boot sale or other major public gathering at the Shed, we have advised the Fire Brigade (and other emergency services) and they have been ready to assist if necessary. The Fire Brigade also helped out the Shed by moving our containers on their foundation stumps one night after dark as a hands-on training course for their members. They used heavy lifting gear and great expertise to position the containers precisely saving the Shed some serious expenditure.

Concrite P/L (Yass) donated the concrete pad at the back of the Workshop on which we have built our store for paints and chemicals and also to house our exhaust systems to keep the Shed clear of sawdust and airborne dust particles.

YVMS Exercise Group 9 The YVMS Exercise Group, established in 2009) comprises a number of Shed community members. They each pay $5 for the weekly core strength and balance exercise session. The proceeds of these sessions are held in a "Good Deeds Account" which the Exercise Group uses to support a range of community groups including CanAssist, St Vincent de Paul and

YVMS Exercise Group

Circle of Friends. The YVMS Exercise Group has also made generous donations back to the Shed to help with projects from time to time including our Christmas events and more recently a $500 donation towards the Roof Over Containers Project.

Yass Soldiers Club The Yass Soldiers Club made a major $2,000 donation to the Shed in September 2017 to assist with our project to roof over the two forty foot containers and also between the containers and the Wood working workshop. This project will almost double the under-cover area of the Shed and will provide space for work and social events out of the sun and the rain.

Yass Outdoor Power Centre We have about an acre of grounds to maintain at the Shed. Much of this is grassed and it is a major task to stay on top of it in the summer. The Yass Outdoor Power Centre donated a pre-loved ride on mower to the Shed which has proved to be ideally suited to the task and has allowed us to keep the grounds looking very good. We are very grateful to this generous donor.

Rob Pollack Concreting P/L have been involved in two projects at the Shed. They surveyed dug the footings and installed the 12 concrete blocks on which the two 40 foot containers are placed. This project was provided at significantly less than cost to the Shed. More recently, Rob and his team screeded and finished the large concrete pad at the back of the workshop which houses the new store for paints and chemicals and also to house our exhaust systems to keep the Shed clear of sawdust and airborne dust particles.

Calendar of upcoming events at the Shed (or elsewhere) Wednesday 2 May: First Wednesday Morning Tea 10am to 11.30am – come along and enjoy Tasty Treats from Tanks Bakery (not to mention tea or coffee). Don't miss it! Thursday 10 May: Visit by members of the Weston Creek Men’s Shed – arriving around 1.30pm. Come along and welcome them. If you would like to bone up, find out a few things about their Shed and what they do – here is their website: http://westoncreekmensshed.org.au/wordpress/

Thursday 24th May: Yass Quick Quilters Afternoon Tea. Shed Members have been invited to this event which will be raising money for CanAssist. It costs $2 to attend and the Shed is donating a couple of items to be raffled. Come along and enjoy home baked cakes etc – we went last year and it was amazing! Saturday 15 September – long range heads up. The Committee has decided to hold a Garage Sale at the Shed on 15 September. Over the next months we will be sorting our holdings and deciding on what we will be selling. Members are also invited to bring your own items for sale – the deal is you keep 90% of your sale proceeds and make a donation of 10% to the Shed for saving you the trouble of advertising and having hordes descend on your place. Start thinking about it.

General info and other stuff Membership News Our membership now stands at 104 with the recent arrival of Phillip Ranyard, Gregory Latham and Andrew and Liam Mernagh (Liam is just 16 months old, so I think it is beyond challenge now that we have the youngest Men’s Shed member IN THE WORLD – and possibly the youngest person to have ever been recognised as a bona fide MAN!!!. Say hello when you see them and make them welcome. It is coming up to that time of year again, folks, when I am going to start annoying you about renewing your memberships for the 2018/19 Year. Quite a number of you have done so already – and anyone who has signed up or renewed since early March is covered until 31 July 2019. Beat the rush and see me soon (with your $25 - which covers our annual insurance to cover you). I will beef up this activity as the current financial year hurtles to a close. A letter from the land where the crows fly backwards!! Greetings to my fellow Yass Shedders, A letter from South Australia. It was a dark and stormy night, no wait it was a bright sunny day, the temperature is expected to reach mid 30s C, after a low of 23 C. The day time temperatures are pleasant, but overnight the temperature is in the high teens or low twenties making it harder to sleep. Most of my worldly goods and I have been reunited. Damage as is as expected but not as bad as it could have been, and it has given me some ongoing projects. My most valuable asset, my collection of vinyl records is largely intact. Now to my adventures as a stranger in a strange land. I have found many things have changed in my nearly thirty years away, but many things have not changed at all. Sights I remember as I drive around listening to the “oldies” radio station, listening to music I listened to when driving around all those years ago “when I wore a younger man’s clothes”. I haven’t ventured into the city of Adelaide yet. I drove past the closed Holden factory in Elizabeth the other day and felt a little sad, the feeling of I get in Elizabeth is a feeling of a community doing it tough. There is evidence of poverty; the local shopping centre has a lot of closed shops. If you travel further things seem brighter, there is an urban renewal project through some of the older parts of Elizabeth, streets of old housing trust duplexes are being pulled down and being replaced with new housing, a rejuvenation of the town centre which has a lot of building projects, they are building a motel, an ice rink, a tennis centre, the “largest undercover lawn bowls complex in the Southern Hemisphere”, the Adelaide United soccer team has moved its training facilities to Elizabeth. I hope it brings prosperity to the area post Holden; it does strike me as “give them circuses”, rather than any ongoing employment options, time will need to pass judgement, I guess. I have visited the local Men’s Shed, which like Yass is supported by the local council. They provide a building in the council depot. I went on a Friday and introduced myself and was given a tour by a couple of members, one guy used to be a shift leader at Holden, the tour included the usual workshop tour, photos of projects, roster of who is working on what project. They run BBQs at the local Bunnings as a fundraiser, they also sell items they make online. An item they make a few of is a mud kitchen; they donate these to local playgroups and kindergartens. I introduced

the “toast tongs” to them. I was struck by a comment that when you commit to attendance of the shed on particular day or days, the expectation is that you will attend. You need to participate in projects which generate income for the shed; in short to paraphrase Wayne, “it IS a job centre”. I will attend a few more times before I make up my mind. A few of you had said to me the dynamics could be very different from shed to shed. I have watched the progress on the container roof with interest; I hope you have a suitable event to christen it. Look after the shed and yourselves. I have included a couple of pictures of mud kitchens in case anyone is interested in making one; I have also included a picture of a little jig for making multiple copies of an item on a lathe.

Yours in Shedding Croweater Pete Latest Shed Hero – Bob Nash

It’s pretty easy to pick Bob as this edition’s Hero. He has just “volunteered” to go around again as President for another year – the first of our Presidents to be elected for a 3rd time. He reckons this is the last time – we’ll see, Bob…… It’s not so easy to list all of Bobs achievements for and contributions to the Shed – lots of what he does is on the quiet and when no one is watching. However, some major achievements have been: The complete rebuild, lining of walls, floor covering and

making comfortable of the Kay Lemon Room, the installation of the patio front door

which made last winter bearable and makes keeping the place clean possible, managing the roof project, building the shed at the back (including all of the associated groundworks, making decisions and organising things like the trip to Carey’s Caves, Christmas Parties, liaising with Council, visits by other Sheds and dignitaries (including relieving lots of them of lots of money), being the public face of the Shed in the Yass Valley and generally being a good and very approachable bloke. Not only that, but he has great ideas for the future and he demonstrates just how good his approach of “thinking outside the square” can be. Well done, bob – a very deserving YVMS Hero!

R2's Ravishing Recipe From the kitchen Something a little bit different this is month. However, it is open to interpretation and your creativity. It takes a little time to prepare, but the reward is well worth the effort. Leave out the mince and it becomes a very nice vegetarian dish. Those of us who have vegetarian friends and often at bewilderment of what to cook, here is a possible solution. In method below, there is a way of preparing this dish 50/50, that is 50% vegetarian and 50% meat. Not to ridicule vegetarians, but there is an old saying in the kitchen “a vegetarian, is just a very poor hunter”.

Burrito Lasagne Now, instead of the usual pasta layers, I am suggesting that we use corn from a ‘burrito kit’ as well as spices. Equipment: 1 x spring cake baking tin. Ingredients: 1 x Burrito Kit (available at Aldi or Woolies) 500g of pork or beef or chicken, or lamb mince. (Preference for a mixture of two) 1 x pkt of pizza 3 cheeses, + mozzarella, parmesan (at least two or three varieties of cheese for flavour) 2 x cans of crushed tomatoes 2 x medium size tomatoes halved, deseeded and chopped finely 2 x tbs tomato paste (onion and garlic increase the flavour content) 1 x red capsicum (large) finely diced 2 x onions finely diced 2 x cloves of garlic minced ½ tsp of chilli flakes, cumin, Chinese five spices, oregano Mixed fresh vegetables, such as, mushrooms, broccoli, zucchini, carrot etc. Well any vegetables in your refrigerator (all finely diced). If doing a 50/50 version do not dice the mushrooms but cut them into thick segments. ½ glass of white wine (for deglazing pan) Olive oil for greasing spring-loaded baking dish (pressurised can easiest) Worcestershire sauce ¾ tbs of sugar ½ cup breadcrumbs (optional) Herbs, (personal choice) such as, parsley, coriander, thyme, rosemary (if using lamb mince add mint) Method:

1. preheat oven to 200° C

2. in a frying pan, on the oven top, medium heat, with a little olive oil add onions, garlic, two diced tomatoes

seedless, capsicum and other vegetables. Sauté for approximately 3 to 5 minutes. Add mince and brown.

Remove mixture from heat and place in a bowl.

3. If doing a 50/50 keep the sauté vegetables in a separate bowl.

4. Deglaze pan with half a glass of white wine or red wine and add to bowl.

5. In a pot, at the same time whilst your vegetables are in the sauté process. Add two cans of crushed tomatoes

and the tomato paste, along with the spices and a dash of Worcestershire sauce and sugar. Include the

spices that come in the burrito kit to taste. Cook for approximately 3/5 minutes on medium heat to allow the

spices and the tomatoes to blend. Add to the mince and vegetable bowl. Mix lovingly with a wooden spoon

or hands until all items are combined.

6. Spray spring cake dish with olive oil. Lay a corn burrito on the base.

7. For 50/50 vegetarian and meat dish, divide centre line with mushrooms, thus forming a barrier. Fill one half

with vegetables and the other half with a mixture of meat and vegetables using the mushrooms as a barrier

between the two. Cover the mixture with a variety of cheeses. Add another corn burrito and continue

layering the lasagne.

8. Complete the top layer with a mixture of all cheeses and breadcrumbs

9. Bake in oven at 180° C for approximately 25/30 minutes or until breadcrumbs and cheese mixture is golden

brown

10. Undo the spring mechanism and serve at the table with the layers evident.

Tuesday Exercise Classes

2-3pm on Tuesdays The classes are not onerous or difficult. They are designed to improve core strength and balance and the cost is $5 per session. These classes are not just for Shed members or just for men.

Tell and invite your friends – they will all be made welcome!

See you in The David Hale Room in the Yass Valley Community Centre (next door to the Men's Shed).

The contributions made by members of the Exercise group each week ($5 per person per session) are being saved in the YVMS Good Deeds Fund for use when we would like to help out either in the Shed or in the Community.

Shed Opening Times

• Tuesdays: 9am to noon. On Tuesdays we have the VALMAR contingent attend and they enjoy the mentoring that Shed members are able to give – especially help with their projects. There is always something warm to eat on Tuesday mornings, too.

• Thursdays: 1.30pm to 4.30pm – normal activity (ie anything anyone wants to do – workshop, coffee and chat, garden, joke telling, etc etc)

• Saturdays: 1.30pm to 4.30pm. – activity same as Thursdays - closed on Saturday 4 November

• First Wednesday of each month: 10am to 11.30am, we have “First Wednesday Morning Tea” which is a time at the Shed for simply social-only time. No workshop activity or noise to interrupt the chat. This is a very good time to meet like minded members and to find those with whom you might have a lot in common. Tank of Tank’s Bakery fame (also a member) provides cakes and pastries, gratis, for this event.

• Last Saturday of the Month (generally around 2pm) – an informal Info Exchange that allows members to interact with the Committee and vice versa – discussing issues and keeping everyone up to date. It is at meetings like this where we have great ideas like building a roof over our containers. Come long and tell us what you want.
