THE FORMATION OF THE DAM WAS GENERATED FROM THE EXISTING LANDSCAPE OF THE UPPER MANGATAWHIRI
RESERVOIR IN THE HUNUA RANGES. LOOKING AT THE WAY THE CONTOUR AND MESH CONNECT WITH VARIABLES OF
ROUTES AND PROGRAMS ON SITE ALLOWED THE CREATION OF THE “FOLDING” STRUCTURE. UNDERSTANDING THE
STRUCTURAL ELEMENTS OF A DAM AND THE DIFFERENT ASPECTS THAT PRODUCE THE ENGINEERED FUNCTION OF
STABLE DAM WERE TAKEN INTO CONSIDERATION WHILE TESTING THE STRENGTH OF DIFFERENT FOLDING
TECHNIQUES. AN ANALYSIS OF THE SITE AND HOW THE DIFFERENT PROGRAMMES CAN BE INCORPORATED INTO THE NEW DESIGN OF THE HYDRO DAM, THE ROADS ARE ALTERED
ONLY ON THE DAM FACE WHILE THE REST OF THE ROADS ARE KEPT THE SAME. ADDITIONAL PROGRAMS INTEGRATED INTO THE DESIGN TO ALLOW THE DAM TO BE A MULTIFUNCTION-
ING INFRASTRUCTURE.
THE FOLDING COMPONENT TO THE DAM IS SEEN THROUGH THE STRUCTURAL ELEMENTS ON THE DAM FACE. THE FOUR EDGE CONNECTIONS OF THE FOLDS ARE LINKED THROUGH
BOTH MACRO AND MICRO SYSTEMS. THE MACRO CONNECTION IS THE DIRECTION GENERATION OF THE FORM
THROUGH THE SITE WHILE THE MICRO CAN BE SEEN THROUGH THE STRUCTURAL ARRANGEMENT OF THE DAM
FACE AND HOW THE GEOMETRICAL FOLDING SYSTEM IS APPLIED TO THE FACE TO ALLOW A STRUCTURALLY STABLE
DESIGN.

TO HAVE TRANSPARENT UMBRELLAS AND USE THEM TO CREATE A SOUND - WAVE PATTERN. THIS IDEA WAS DEVELOPED DUE TO THE PUBLIC RESPONSE WE GAINED DURING EVENT ONE. EVERYONE WANTED TO KNOW WHAT WAS HIDDEN BEHIND THE UMBRELLAS.
SO IN EVENT TWO, WE PLAN TO GIVE THEM A GLIMPSE OF THE EQUIPMENT WITHIN EACH MODULE; EXPOSING THE TIMBER STRUCTURE AND LIGHT HOLDERS. IN ADDITION, THE TRANSPARENT UMBRELLAS WILL SHOW THE LIGHT MORE CLEARLY AND THIS WILL CATCH THE CROWDS’ EYES.

TO CREATE A SCREEN SURFACE THROUGH AN ARRANGEMENT OF UMBRELLAS THAT LIGHT UP AND RESPOND TO THE BEAT OF THE SOUND THAT WE WISH TO CREATE (WITH THE MUSIC STUDENTS). A FEW OF THE UMBRELLAS WILL BE MOTORIZED TO ACTIVATE IN RESPONSE TO MOTION OR THE BEATS (HENCE RECASTING THE CHARACTERISTICS OF SPEAKERS/AMPLIFIERS).

THE SITE WE FOCUSED ON WAS THE OWEN G. GLEN BUILDING (OGGB). THE OVERALL ATMOSPHERE THAT WAS PRESENTED ARCHITECTURALLY WAS THAT OF A GRAND COMMERCIAL BUILDING, IN WHICH BUSINESS STUDENTS WOULD FEEL AS IF THEY WERE IN A BUSINESS ENVIRONMENT. THE OBSERVATIONS I MADE OF OGGB FOCUSED ON THE LACK OF INTERACTION AND THE TIMIDITY OF THE ATRIUM STAIRS. THE PURPOSE OF THE STAIRS CONNECTING LEVEL 1 AND 0 IS LOST IN THE GRAND ATRIUM AS PEOPLE ONLY USE THE TWO SIDE STEPS. THE CONNECTION OF CARNIVAL IN SUCH AN ENVIRONMENT IS BASED UPON THE INTERACTION BETWEEN THE “CLASSES” WITHIN THE BUSINESS SCHOOL, THE LECTURERS AND THE STUDENTS.
IN ORDER TO PLACE MY THRESHOLD INTO OGGB, I NEEDED TO USE THE EXISTING ARCHITECTURE AND SITORT THE REALISTIC INTERPRETATION OF WHAT IT WOULD MEAN. IN MY THRESHOLD PROJECT, I INCLUDED THE GEOMETRY OF THE WALLS AND IN ORDER TO SHOW MY DESIGNS IDEAS, I CONTINUED TO ALTER THE ARRANGEMENT OF THE STAIRS TO CREATE FUNCTIONAL-ITY AND INTERACTION. USING SECONDLIFE AS A MEDIUM, THE USE OF SCRIPTS ALLOWED THE ATMO-SPHERE OF THE OGGB, THAT WE BUILT AS A GROUP TO CHANGE SIGNIFICANTLY. IN CREATING SUBTLE ALTER-ATIONS IN THE WAY THE STAIRS ARE ALIGNED, I WAS ABLE TO GUIDE OCCUPANTS TO GO MOVE A CERTAIN WAY SUB- CONSCIOUSLY.
AS THE NEED FOR COLLABORATION WAS AN ADVANTAGE IN THIS PROJECT, I WORKED TOGETH-ER WITH TWO OTHER PEOPLE, INTEGRATING OUR IDEAS TOGETHER. THE IMPORTANCE OF TRADING IDEAS AND WORKING TOGETHER AS A COLLECTIVE GROUP WAS A STRONG ASPECT IN USING SECON-DLIFE. JAIME JWAN (JAMMYUNPLUGGED), SOPHIE CHUNG (SOPHIABLUEWOOD) AND I COLLABORAT-ED ON THE ATRIUM STAIRS. IN THE BEGINNING OUR DIFFERENT IDEAS DID NOT INTEGRATE INTO A SINGLE DESIGN BUT RATHER THREE SEPARATE DESIGNS. THE UNDERLYING IDEA WAS TO CREATE A DIFFERENT ATMOSPHERE WHEN WALKING THROUGH THE ATRIUM AND THE BUILDING AS A WHOLE. WE WANTED TO BREAK THE HIERARCHY THAT WAS CREATED THROUGH THE DISCONNEC-TION BETWEEN LEVEL 2 AND 1 AS WELL AS THE DISTINCT BARRIER BETWEEN STUDENT AND PROFESSORS. IN ORDER FOR INTERACTION TO OCCUR THE ATRIUM SPACE BECOME A LOCATION THAT TURNED TO BE SIMILAR TO THAT OF A RIVER-BED WITH A WATERFALL RUNNING THROUGH IT.

THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE DESIGN WAS THROUGHT OF FROM THE WEAKEST POINT IN ORDER FOR OUR DESIGN PROCESS TO BEGIN. THE ORIENTATION OF THE ATRIUM STAIRS HAVE BEEN ALTERED TO THE COURTYARD OPENING OF THE OGGB BUSINESS SCHOOL. THE REASONING BEHIND THIS WAS TO CREATE MORE INTERACTION AND LIGHT AS WELL AS A SENSE OF CONNECTION WITH THE PLAZA SPACE. AFTER SPEAKING TO OCCU-PANTS OF THE SPACE SUCH AS THE LECTURERS AND PROFESSORS, WE FOUND THAT THE NOISE HEARD FROM THE ATRIUM TRAVELS UPWARDS TOWARDS THEIR OFFIC-ES, CREATING DISTURBANCE. IN CHANGING THE ATRIUM STAIRS, WE ARE ABLE TO CENTRE THE NOICE AND INTERATION INTO A SPACE THAT WILL NOT DISTRUPT THOSE ON THE HIGHER LEVELS WHILE STILL ALLOWING CONNECTION BETWEEN THE FLOORS AND BREAKING THE HIERACHY CREATED.

As Auckland City continues to rapidly grow as New Zealand’s economic center, an exponential increase in population and visitors will occur by 2050. Therefore, a new airport infrastructure must be designed to cope with the increasing demands of overseas travelers and incoming aircrafts. Located on the coast of Manuaka Harbour, the existing Auckland International Airport is situated within vegetation and industrial areas making expansion to the existing airport an expensive project for the government to fund. Therefore, the Voiden Airport design is located on the waters of the harbour to allow the existing airport to function whilst the proposed design is in construction. Each structure within the Voiden Tower has been assigned with a particular function and area percentage based on the predicted increase of travel to particular continents; Australia and Asia ranking in the top two continents of travel by 2050. These percentages act as controllers for the areas of each terminal building. Below water, a marine research centre has been designed to allow for further studies of New Zealand marine biology. The circulation design of the Voiden Airport provides the opportunity for occupants to determine their own paths of travel as they reach their intended destinations. Occupants travel through the building in a specially designed HydroLift powered by the ocean water access surrounding the site; which acts as the vertical and horizontal transportation. Terminals are split into separate towers designed to increase the e�ciency of departing passengers as well as arriving visitors by assigning a speci�c security and customs system to the continent of the destination. For example, a passenger arriving from America will pass through a stricter luggage examination as opposed to a passenger travelling domestically or to another international location. In addition to creating a friendly experience for passengers and crew members, a hotel and serviced apartments have been incorporated in the design of the Voiden Airport.
