Quiet ly abutt ing the leafy r idges of East Rock
Park in Connect icut , the Whitney Museum
looks to incorporate a new component into i ts
exist ing educat ional program---a mult i - func-
t ional faci l i ty that is par t greenhouse, par t
soi l factory, and par t exhibi t ion space.
The project a ims to chal lenge the surface
condi t ion of the ground. Land is tessel lated
into planes that are l ight ly shi f ted above or
below the ground level to generate spaces
that integrate al l three funct ions into the lo-
cal landscape.

From afar, the project appears to be a natural expansion of the exist ing landscape. Trees are planted into sunken pi ts created by surface tessel-
lat ion, yet f rom a distance they give of f the i l lusion of an ordinary forest .

THE LAMP SHADEFA L L 2 0 0 9 A l ex a n d e r P u r ve s
The assignment asks for a paper lamp that
incorporates the golden rat io.
The project is inspired by the Vat ican stairs,
as wel l as the Japanese ar t of k i r igami. The
ent i re lamp is made out of one single piece
of 18 x 24 paper wi th s l i ts cut out at even
intervals.

SANT ANDREAS P R I N G 2 0 1 0 E m m a n u e l Pe t i t
Th is is an analys is o f the Sant Andrea Ca-
thedra l in Mantua, I ta ly. The arch i tect is
Leon Bat t is ta Alber t i .
In addi t ion to a ser ies of drawings, the
analys is is d iv ided in to four par ts- - -c i rcu la-
t ion, program, tecton ic and massing. Each
par t enta i ls a phys ica l model as wel l as
re levant conceptual d iagrams.
The conclusion of the analysis centers on the
axial qual i ty inherent in every corner of the ca-
thedral , an idea that could be fur ther extended
to the cathedral ’s relat ionship wi th i ts surround-
ing urban space. A symbiosis exists between
the inter ior space and the plaza that i t f lows
into.
13
Instead of t racing out the actual route of a moving object in space, the model interprets the local c i rculat ion through a diagrammatical presenta-
t ion of the s imultaneous change in both speed and perspect ive as a person moves through the cathedral . This relat ionship manifests the exper i -
ent ia l aspect of the c i rculat ion.
14
15
Analogic of hot a i r and cold air, the red and blue palet te exhibi ts a dichotomy of space that is par t compressed and par t expanded. The idea is
to present the program of the cathedral as a cont inuous band of space that destroys the physical boundar ies of the cathedral .
16
17
The tectonic model zooms in on one of the s ide por tals annexed to the nave. For the main barrel vaul t , cherry and bass are used simultaneously
to convey the weight shi f t necessary for the structure to hold intact . For the por tal , weight bear ing elements are emphasized with sol id massing
whi le elements serving no structural purposes are executed with l ighter mater ia ls such as st icks and Plexiglas.
18
The massing model i l lustrates a tendency for the inter ior space to group i tsel f into mult ip le subsets. This grouping not only draws out a hier-
archical breakdown of the aggregate space, but excludes elements (rendered in plexi) of an even more subsidiary nature, such as the praying
chambers and entrance porches, out of th is system.

BODY IN SPACEFA L L 2 0 1 1 Tu r n e r B r o o k s / A d a m H o p f n e r
Design a space for a s ingle inhabi tant. The
project is to be located at the Stonycreek
Quarry, Connect icut .
The project is conceived as a surreal sce-
nar io where sol id ground is reimagined as
weight less surfaces. Planes peel of f of the
rock, the inter ior space generated is cov-
ered with red velour to emphasize the pro-
cess.

Transparency vs Opaci ty
The same module made of
sanded plexi is mult ip l ied at
d i f ferent scales and layered on
the inside of one another to not
only create a r igorous spat ia l

perfect intersect ion between
absolute t ransparency and total
opaci ty.

HOUSE FOR TWOS P R I N G 2 0 1 0 Ke i t h K r u m w i e d e / J oy c e T s i a n g
The two cl ients l ive together but their cur-
rent house does not resolve their sched-
ule conf l ic ts. The br ief asks for a solut ion
through which the two cl ients wi l l be able to
own their pr ivate spaces respect ively whi le
st i l l being able to maintain an int imate rela-
t ionship wi th each other.
To achieve a sense of separat ion, the proj-
ect ut i l izes the c lassical geometry of the
Mobius c i rc le, wi th two cour tyards as the
main div is ion. The ver t ical structures are
rendered in ei ther wood or glass, which,
through strategic placements, make i t pos-
sible for the c l ients to possess visual access
to each other ’s presence.
26
27
28
A major conf l ic t exists where the work schedule of c l ient
1 c lashes with the le isure t ime of c l ient 2. The cour tyard
mediates th is conf l ic t , yet the glass panels st i l l make i t
possible for a sense of int imacy to l inger.

The Town is a fur ther development of House
for Two. The dichotomy of pr ivacy and int i -
macy inherent in House for Two conceives
the possibi l i ty for three new prototypes of
housing to be generated, serving mult ip le
fami l ies.
With respect to the social context , an S-
shaped plat form is raised to the second
f loor. The S-shape al lows for a s ingle fam-
i ly to have access to two separate common
spaces( one below and one above), so that
the same household is s imultaneously a
member of two communit ies, an arrange-
ment that is crucial for maintaining a heal thy
social environment for the neighbourhood.
31
Two houses that are separate f rom each other on the ground level converge
onto the same plat form on the second f loor.
This design defeats one of the most commonly found i l l of modern residen-
t ia l archi tecture---a loss of encounter and communicat ion.

THE DOMINANT VOIDFA L L 2 0 1 1 Tu r n e r B r o o k s / A d a m H o p f n e r
The project intends to create a dominant
void wi thout producing an enclosed shel l .
Four squares are brought together through
the aid of f ive beams. Every square has
two beams at tached to i t , yet no two beams
stemming out of the same square end up ar-
r iv ing on a s ingle square.
The resul t ing space chal lenges the conven-
t ional idea of a void as the inevi table out-
come of an absolute enclosure. Not a s ingle
planar surface is created, yet the space
exhibi ts impressive dimensions.
