Surprise Visitor from Alabama

A great crowd enjoyed Creole Jazz Kings July 26. Keith Baltz ended the day with

“ It’s a Wonderful World”. The music does make a wonderful world. The second

Jam Set was a lot of fun. We had 3 banjos and three 3 trombones. One of the

trombones was a Contra Bass trombone, also described as a slide tuba. What a

great sound. You never know what treats are in store for us from our bands and

jammers. Now then, mark your calendars for August 23 when our featured band

will be the Zinfandel Stompers. Watch for band information elsewhere in the BEAT.

Have a great summer. See you all in August.

Jim Rouse, the Storage and

Equipment Manager for this

society would like help with the

heavy lifting he has done for many

years for us. This involves moving

the sound system equipment every

fourth Sunday from the storage

locker in Sunnyvale where it is kept

and bringing it to the Elks Lodge

to set it up prior to the session’s

start; also the breakdown of the

equipment and the return of it to

storage. Yes, this sounds like a big

responsibility. Hopefully, there is a

sturdy Dixieland lover among you

who would be willing to do this

work. Please contact any member

of the board at the entrance desk

or look for Jim at the sound board

along the back side of the

auditorium to learn more about how

you can help us.

Wonderful Weekend

in Washington

BY CAROL GOEDDE

For the last weekend in July it was off in an RV to Lacey

Washington for the 25th Annual America’s Classic Jazz

Festival but without Mary. Instead I was introducing an old

friend to my favorite music. We arrived Wednesday, a day

early and were hooked up right away. And got the welcome

news that The Jammers with Bert Barr and his wife, Rose

Marie, would be playing at cocktail time. We were just in

time. We grabbed chairs, umbrellas and a cocktail and off we

went. What a great start it was with people sharing appetizers

and dancing among 52 RVs from all over.

Thursday the music didn’t start until 7 p.m. which gave time

to fulfill the dream of seeing Mt. Rainier. It took two and half

hours to get there, and it was worth it to see that spectacular

mountain covered with snow and blue lupins, red paint brush

and yellow daisies. We toured the museum and walked around

before going back to Lacey just before the festival started. I

got this statement from my friend Eric on his first exposure to

Dixieland. “Lots of bands at this festival. You know, if a rock

and roll fan listens to classical music Mozart can sound just

like Beethoven. Good, but similar. In the same way most of

the Dixieland Jazz bands sound very similar. Good but similar.

There were a few exceptions, Tom Rigney who plays an electric

violin is very flamboyant. Exhibitionist even. He plays a wide

variety of music including Cajun/zydeco which I liked a lot.

He also has a boogie woogie pianist in his group. Toe tappin’

music!! The other group I liked was Tom Hook and the Terriers;

he played a piano in a three man group. Very personable and

an incredible pianist. When a band plays a certain type of

song, Carol starts her umbrella parade, passing out colorful

umbrellas and leading a parade around the aisles. What is a

manly man such as myself to do? Obviously, grab a handful

of umbrellas and follow Carol around trying to look cool,

sophisticated and fun loving all at the same time. Such fun!”

Many friends from South Bay were there. Suzanne Shynne,

David Florus and Sandy Hammonds, Doc and Bernice Eggen,

Rae Ann Berry, Phil and Geri Eggers, Carlos and Nancy

Tahmazian. Carlos was playing washboard with Uptown

Lowdown.

Dance lessons were taught on Friday and Saturday mornings.

Eric went and learned the fox trot and Balboa, and we had a

great time dancing. Other bands we heard and danced to were,

High Sierra, Black Swan with Red Hot Mama Marilyn Keller,

Ivory and Gold, The Wolverines, We Three and Ida Blue, guest

singer. She made a sweet song sassy, a bitter song raucous

and a love song raunchy. Jeff Barnhart/Charlotte’s Boys who

included Jim Buchmann-reeds, Jim Fryer-trombone, Bob

Schulz-cornet, Marty Eggers-bass and John Duffee-drums.

Charlotte Dickson deserves her own band with these high

powered musicians. She has led this festival for over 20 years

and is retiring at the age of 90 and turning the job over to Walt

Bowen. She will continue to support the board. The Fat Babies

with young musicians were loved by all. Fat Babies isn’t just

reading charts; they are a working band who know traditional

jazz idiom inside and out, and their repertoire includes the

usual standards as well as obscure Oliver/Armstrong/ Morton

tunes and pop tunes from the early 20’s and early 30’s. Great

music!

I think Eric’s hooked on jazz and dancing! And this was

reinforced by the return we got by buying raffle tickets to

support youth musicians. Yep! We were winners. We won an

all events badge to Evergreen Jazz festival in Colorado which

Eric is going to without me July 24th, 25th and 26, a Starbucks

basket and an all events badge for Three Rivers Festival in

April.

What can I say??? It was a fabulous festival and everyone

should try to get to Lacey next year.

This year was the 19th annual Cline Cellars Wine &

Dixieland Jazz Festival, and it was another good

one.Festival Director Ken Keeler made a few changes in the

Festival’s tried-and true format, inviting eight Traditional Jazz

Bands instead of the usual six. This meant that some bands

played two sets instead of three, but it brought additional variety

to a festival that has tended to feature the same bands year

after year. The usual groups were Black Diamond Blue Five,

Devil Mountain Jazz Band, Golden Gate Rhythm Machine

(this year with Pat Yankee), Natural Gas Jazz Band, and the

Royal Society Jazz Orchestra. In the usual “finale” set, the

Jambalaya Swing Band added players from several of the

other bands, for a “big band” set. This year’s major “out-of-

town” group, Ray Skjelbred and His Cubs, were well received,

as they generally are at festivals everywhere.

Rounding out the band lineup was the Zenith Jazz Band. When

Ted Shafer retired from playing last fall, he also retired the

“Jelly Roll Jazz Band” name and handed the band over to

cornetist Earl Scheelar. Earl now leads what is basically the

same band under the “Zenith Jazz Band” banner. Ted Shafer

was there, looking as healthy as he as in several months.

He heard both the Zenith Jazz Band sets and appeared

pleased with what Earl is doing with the band.

Another staple of the Cline Festival has been piano music,

both ragtime and jazz, on the Tasting Room porch. For 2015,

this tradition continued with music from Frederick Hodges,

Ray Skjelbred, Bob Ringwald, Virginia Tichenor, Tom Brier

and Tom Barnebey.

A major factor in evaluating the Festival’s success is the

weather. It can be blistering hot with no wind, it can be

windy and chilly. This year’s weather was just about perfect,

with temperatures in the mid to upper 70’s and just enough

gentle breeze to be refreshing.
