November 2009 marks the 100th Anniversary of Avedis immigrating to America. As a twenty year old entering Ellis Island in New York, our grandfather had no idea that he would someday reconnect with his cymbal making past. But, eighteen years later, his Uncle Aram appealed to him to return to Istanbul to assume his birthright of carrying on the family business. Understandably, Avedis did not want to return to his native Istanbul having already become an American citizen, serving in the U.S. Army and starting a family. So, Avedis convinced his uncle Aram to relocate the Zildjian family business to the U.S.
It was September of 1929, one month before the beginning of the Great Depression, that the Zildjian Company was incorporated in Quincy, Massachusetts. Already an owner of a successful candy making business, Avedis persevered through the Great Depression running two businesses simultaneously.
The fact that we are just now emerging from the worst Recession since the Great Depression has strengthened our appreciation for all the obstacles our grandfather had to overcome. Our grandfather and our father Armand following his lead, never faltered in their commitment to reinvest in the plant. In Armand’s words, it was Avedis who “breathed new life into the Old World art of cymbal making”.
In that same spirit, we continue that same commitment to new technologies which enhance Zildjian’s 385 year old cymbal making tradition. Bringing drummers the instruments they want to move the music forward. In our endeavor to innovate, we oftentimes have and will collaborate with the great drummers of the day.
One of the most successful collaborations occurred in the 1960’s when Louie Bellson came up with the New Beat hi hats. In this past year, we sadly recognized the passing of Louie, an icon of the drumming community. Louie was a central part of the Zildjian legacy in that he embodied everything that Zildjian stands for, excellence, loyalty, the love of music, the love of drumming, drummers, and the giving back to others. God Bless you Louie.
Thank you.

rock, in 3D!
It has been busy here at Zildjian with new products, artist
signings, video games galore and much more. There is not
always good news to report as we have mourned and lost
friends, but here are some quick highlights into all things
Zildjian in the recent past. As always, you can keep up to
date with every bit of Zildjian News at www.Zildjian.com.
>>>Zildjian Remembers
Louie Bellson
(July 6, 1924 – February 14, 2009)
All of us were deeply saddened by the passing of
drumming pioneer, musical giant, humanitarian
and longtime friend, Louie Bellson. Throughout
his illustrious 70-year career, Louie played with
virtually every giant in the music world and was
a prolific composer, arranger, bandleader and
educator.
A true innovator, Louie is credited as the
originator of using two bass drums, a concept
that literally reshaped the way the drums were
played. Louie also pioneered the concept of
using a heavy bottom Hi Hat cymbal with a
medium top, thus Zildjian’s legendary New Beat
Hi Hats were born.
Besides being one the greatest musicians of all
time, Louie was the most beloved person in the
entire percussion industry. In 1998, Louie, along
with Roy Haynes, Elvin Jones and Max Roach,
was the recipient of Zildjian’s first American
Drummers Achievement Awards.
Louie had an enduring relationship with the
Zildjian Family; Avedis, Armand, Craigie and
Debbie, as well as many others at the Zildjian
Company. He will be sorely missed by all of us at
Zildjian, and by the entire drumming community.

>>>Zildjian On Tour 2009Zildjian hit the road hard with Zildjian on Tour, visiting cities across
the U.S., Zildjian on Tour allowed drummers the chance to meet
and select cymbals with Zildjian Family members as well as some of
the cymbal experts from the Zildjian Cymbal factory. On hand were
limited edition prototype cymbals that could only be purchased the
day of the event. To complete the experience, Zildjian Artists Joey
Kramer, John Blackwell, Jimmy Chamberlin, Steve Gorman, Danny
Seraphine, Eric Harland, Steve Smith, Chris Layton, Sonny Emory, Hal Blaine, JJ Johnson,
Anton Fig, Teddy Campbell, Casey Grillo and some new kid named Steve Gadd were gracious
enough to stop by the various events and lend a hand. Thanks guys.
For more info and to see photos from all of the events, head to www.Zildjian.com/ZOT.
>>>Zildjian Headlines GH5!The all new Guitar Hero 5 video game was released in the 4th Quarter of
2009 with Zildjian being the exclusive cymbal brand in the game. We also
prominently feature Zildjian sticks such as the new Travis Barker, Ronnie
Vannucci and Adrian Young “Artist Series” sticks along with our wildly popular
purple DIP® model.
Guitar Hero pioneered the music video game and this GH5 is another example of how the bar is
being raised. This new installment allows gamers to choose from 4 different Zildjian cymbal set ups
including the classic sound of A Zildjian, the modern A Custom, darker Ks and the all new Z3 Rock
line-up. Gamers will now be able to move in and out of the game play mode seamlessly without
interrupting their jam session. Additionally, hits from some of the biggest bands like Coldplay, The
Killers, No Doubt, The Rolling Stones, Santana and others will keep those Zildjian pies rocking.

Zildjian was on the scene for a slew of tours last year ranging
from Warped Tour in the US to Download Fest in the UK. These
tours not only give the fans a chance to see many of their
favorite musicians at once, but also give the drummers the
opportunity to hang with each other, share licks, trade war
stories and catch up with some old friends. This year, there were
many exciting new bands on the tour circuit (You and Me at Six,
Attack!Attack!, Florence and the Machine and Go:Audio) along
with older bands (Creed, Def Leppard, New Found Glory and
Staind) making a comeback in a big way. ADAM CARSONafi

14” and 20” A Custom EFXThis special effects crash cymbal has a unique set of laser generated “cut outs” that allow it to produce a quick, dry and trashy sound used for accenting and punctuating. The brilliant finish makes this “must have” shimmer like any A Custom. Large size and thin weight of the 20” allow for a loud, quick and explosive response. Paper thin weight and small size on the 14” provides the option to be played alone or stacked.22” K Constantinople Bounce Ride
Designed in conjunction with jazz legend Kenny Washington, this newest edition to the K Constantinople line is medium thin in weight that produces a pitch that can ride over the band and cut through most small to big band settings. It has traditional K Constantinople hammering but with more pronounced lathe/tonal grooves that produce plenty of sustain and wash. Has unique series of 8 “cluster” over hammered marks on top that are visually distinct and give it just enough trash and ‘dirt’. You’ll dig this one.
20” K Light Flat Ride Our newest offering to the popular K Light line. This thin weight beauty has extreme stick definition and a palatable level of wash. A traditional flat ride sound with warmth, this 20” ride is a great addition to any set-up needing a cymbal that you can go to when the music gets softer.
22” K Constantinople Thin Ride - Overhammered This new 22” K Constantinople is thin in weight to give it a nice dark pitch and plenty of wash. Additional series of over hammered marks on top of the traditional K Con hammering yields a slightly drier sound with excellent stick definition for marking time. Very controllable that doesn’t get away when playing fast patterns. Great for a small to medium size group setting.
13” & 15” Oriental China "Trash" Authentic “trashy” Chinese sounding cymbal that is very fast and explosive with rapid decay. These two odd sizes are in addition to the 12” through 20” that we currently offer. Both have proprietary hammering and come in a brilliant finish.
22” ZHT Ride This medium heavy weight ride provides excellent wash and a very clear ping. A monster ride that is particularly well suited for Rock.
15” ZHT Mastersound HiHats The ZHT line with its 12% Tin/88% copper alloy, has established itself as a serious performer while providing excellent value. The top of the new 15” Mastersound model is a medium weight cym-bal that provides plenty of volume while the bottom is a heavy weight with the rippled Mastersound edge feature for loads of presence and foot chick. Coupled together, they provide a very clean and powerful set of HiHats.
8” & 10” ZXT Trashformer These paper thin splash cymbals may be played as they are for airy splash effects. Or they can be stacked on top of or under any other cymbal to provide an additional layer of white noise. They are a super versatile way to expand your sound and trashform your current cymbal set-up.
Ahhhh! You have to love the smell of fresh metal in the air - we
sure do! Zildjian has been busy innovating and creating our
most musical instruments ever, ready to fill your ears (and nos-
trils) with absolutely amazing sounds. Read up on what we have
to offer, but there is only so much that words can say. Get down
to your local dealer and try them out for yourselves to really
hear (and smell) what we are talking about.
16” and 18” K EFXDarker version of the A Custom EFX. Produces a quick, dry, dark and trashy sound used for accenting and punctuating. Unique laser generated “cut outs” aid in the sudden explosiveness and quick decay. Traditional K finish and thin weight.

POWER. PROJECTION. PLAYABILITY The Z legacy continues to build with the all-new Z3
series. Designed for the hard hitter who wants power
and projection with absolute playability, this full line
ranges from Splashes to Crashes, HiHats to Chinas
and a full array of Rides. Whatever demands you
make, these instruments will respond. Make your
voice heard with the all new Z3 Cymbals from Zildjian.
19” Thrash Ride Thrash and Burn. If you’re looking to do some
heavy lifting while shouldering the beat, then
definitely pick this guy up. With extra wash
and trash, you’ll get everything you wanted.
Just keep some cold water nearby to ease the
burn…
22” & 20” Medium-Heavy Rides Play hard. Play loud. Power over any amp is
what every drummer wants. Every drummer
will surely be envious of your Z3 Medium Heavy
Ride. Your guitar player, on the other hand, will
be wishing his amp went to 11.
22” & 20” Rock RidesGo on and Rock! The large bell design on these
bad boys will help project your sound to the
back of the venue and beyond. Lay into them
and see just what they can do. You won’t be
disappointed.
21” Mega Bell RideThe big one. This baby is everything you would
expect from the ginormous bell and then some.
With the largest cymbal bell in captivity, you’ll
be sure to be heard over any wall of sound or
crowd of screaming fans.
16”, 17”, 18”, 19”, 20” Medium Crash Powerfully explosive. That loud, hard crash
you’ve always dreamed of is now here. Musical
and explosive at the same time. Made for
whatever situation that demands punctuation
with power. The new TNT? Maybe.
16”, 17”, 18”, 19” Rock CrashMaximum power potential. The epitome of
the Z3 line is all right here in these cymbals.
Pure power, projection and playability. Lay into
these and you won’t feel as if you’re hitting a
manhole cover. The weights are heavier than
the medium versions, with a bit more carry. It’s
like nothing you’ve ever played on before.
12” SplashBig size. Big sound. This powerful little addition
to your arsenal should not be taken lightly.
Packed into its 12 inches are the oversized bell,
extra-pronounced tonal grooves and a whole
lot of sound. Good things do come in small(ish)
packages after all.
14” & 15” Mastersound HiHats Go on. They won’t bite…hard. The extra
amount of sizzle you get from the Mastersound
design (crimped bottom cymbal) allows for
extreme control while supplying a clear and
defined chick sound. These hats also combine
a medium top coupled with a heavy bottom for
extra power. Just don’t bite back. We’ve got our
money on the Z3s to win.
14” & 15” HiHatsWarmth. Aggression. Clarity. The volume
potential, aided by the large bell design, gives
you a set of pristine hats. When you add in the
fact that we’ve paired a medium top and heavy
bottom, you really can feel the extra power.
Batteries not included.
18”, 20” China Super-loud effects. Proprietary hammering
brings a full-bodied sound to these Chinas
giving you a special effects sound that
has to be heard to be understood. It’s what you
would expect from a China x 1,000.

Ginger Baker CreamGinger’s contribution to drumming cannot be overstated. His solid jazz background and use of African tribal rhythms were a major component of “Cream’s” unique sound. With a style like no other, Ginger’s tom tom work and use of multiple cymbal colors were truly groundbreaking for that period. Ginger still has many of the cymbals he bought during his first visit to the Zildjian Factory in the 1960s.
Sib Hashian BostonAs the driving beat for one of Classic Rock’s staple bands, “Boston”, Sib Hashian had a sound all his own. The shimmering sounds of his Avedis Zildjians (which he still uses today) cut through the wall of guitars, but blended perfectly with Brad Delp’s sublime vocals. Check out his Quick Beat Hi Hats on “Don’t Look Back”.
Randy Castillo Ozzy OsbourneOzzy Osbourne, Mötley Crüe, Dio, and Lita Ford - Randy Castillo played with, and was loved by them all. With a heart and spirit as big as his drum sound; Randy’s drumming will live on forever on his recordings and in our memories.
Tim Alexander PrimusOne of the more outlandish and beloved bands of the 90’s, Primus, backed by Tim’s powerful licks, blended the genre lines and reached cult stardom thanks in part to Tim’s playing (and this setup).

>>JAZZThroughout the decades, Jazz continues to be its own organic species evolving daily beyond the realms of the past. The new young lions keep building on what their mentors laid down before them, paying homage to the days that were and those yet to come. But one thing continues as a constant – the cymbals they use to provide the cushion of sound that the rest of the band rides on.

We live in an amazing period of history where we are lucky enough to be able to listen to our heroes playing through high-end recordings while flying in airplanes. The master drummers bring our craft to life in each and every recording that they’ve appeared on. As the years pass, they leave us these moments of history that grow in stature that we all try to emulate. From generation to generation, the legends and the cymbals they used to make their mark live on.

Max Roach Max Roach’s use of A. Zildjians in the 1950s reflected the new sound he helped pioneer called “Bebop.” Max’s hard bopping beat was propelled by his 20” A Zildjian Medium Ride as well as the incorporation of other cymbals for varied ride patterns, sounds and tonal colors.
Louie BellsonLouie’s classic set-up of A. Zildjians remained consistent throughout his lifetime. Though he would occasionally change his ride or a crash here or there, he is forever linked to the classic “A Zildjian sound.” His experimentation with a heavy bottom hi hat and medium top hi hat, led to the development of Zildjian’s legendary New Beat Hi Hats, which are still considered by many as the industry standard.
Elvin JonesElvin’s sound will forever be identified as the essence of the “K Zildjian” sound. So it was only natural to enlist his expertise when we developed the K Constantinople line relaunched in 1998. His touch and his tone were the perfect complement to the organic sounds of K Constantinople cymbals.

1950s 1960s 1970s 1990s 1990s 2000sBuddy RichA big part of Buddy’s signature sound was the ‘shimmer’ of his A. Zildjians. He relied on a 20” A Medium Ride to drive the band (later a 21” Rock Ride) and 18” A Thin Crashes to provide the explosive accents associated with Big Band music, though Buddy could play any style. To this day, whether intentional or not, Buddy’s kit configuration of one rack tom and two floor toms, as well as his classic cymbal set-up, remains one of the most emulated in drumming history.
Steve Smith Vital InformationFew drummers can re-invent themselves as Steve Smith has. Exploding onto the scene in the late 70s with “Journey”, one of the most successful rocks bands in history, Steve is a force in drumming. From A Rock Crashes in Journey, to Ks and As with Vital Information, Steve and Zildjian can do it all.
Antonio Sanchez Pat Metheny GroupAs a student at Berklee College of Music it was clear Antonio Sanchez was destined for big things. With the Pat Metheny Group and three Grammy Awards later, Antonio has more than made his mark on the jazz scene. His cymbal set-up has a variety of musical colors for every situation.

Hal BlaineHal Blaine’s discography reads like a “who’s who” of the 1960s and 1970s L.A. music scene, including 40 #1 and 150 Top 10 hit singles. The Beach Boys, Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley, Neil Diamond, The Monkees, The Mama’s & The Papa’s, The Fifth Dimension, Simon and Garfunkel, The Byrds and the list goes on… Hal used the same Avedis Zildjians for all of his recordings, a testimony to their versatility.
Rick MarottaRick’s deep groove and ever-tasteful drumming can be heard on classic recordings by Carly Simon, James Taylor, Linda Ronstadt, Steely Dan, Warren Zevon, Jackson Browne and Boz Scaggs and so many others. His Hi Hat and Ride sound on Steely Dan’s “Peg” is a great illustration of the versatility of Avedis Zildjians.
Simon PhillipsSimon was one of the most in-demand drummers in London during the 1980s, playing with everyone from Jeff Beck, to Peter Gabriel, to Mick Jagger and The Who. Although his cymbals have varied slightly throughout the years, his set-up from the 1980s is very similar to what he plays today.
Eddie BayersA legendary Nashville session star, Eddie was recently nominated for the Country Music Awards (CMA) “Musician of the Year.” He’s been named a top 10 session player of all time, rightfully so after playing this setup on over 150 gold and platinum albums over the years.
Vinnie ColaiutaWhen Vinnie Colaiuta arrived on the scene in the late 1970s he never looked back. In 1990 Vinnie helped Zildjian design the A Customs, one of our most popular lines, and although he spent most of the decade working with “Sting”, he recorded with a multitude of artists as well, and released his solo record in 1994. Vinnie continues to be a major force, recording with a diverse list of musical giants.
Alex AcunaAlex is the epitome of a multi-percussionist. His energy is contagious; his spirit uplifting. After leaving “Weather Report” in 1978 he became a first call session player in Los Angeles and today he’s one of the most sought after percussionists for recordings, TV and movie sound tracks. He is also a gifted educator.
