Juif Et GanisbourgTonight the AJFF is showing “Gainsbourg”, the biopic of legendary French singer Serge Gainsbourg, with an introduction by the Cultural Affairs and Communications Director at the Atlanta’s French Consulate General Brittany Kraft. But just who is Serge Gainsbourg and why does he matter to a Jewish film festival?

In the Anglo-world he’s the guy who sang “Je t’aime… moi non plus”, the internationally scandalous song that received official condemnation from the Vatican for its racy lyrics and lascivious moans. In France, he is a national treasure whose genius, fervor for innovation, and rebellious spirit forged a new path in music and popular culture. However, he was always a Jewish artist, and the influence this had on his life and work is sadly often overlooked. He was born Lucien Ginsburg in Paris to Russian Jewish parents who fled to France after the Revolution, and he grew up in Nazi occupied France where he was forced to wear the yellow star. As things worsened in Paris his family eventually left the city, but Lucien returned after the war and found work giving music and drawing lessons at a Jewish school for the orphaned children of those who had died in the concentration camps. It was there he began to write his own songs and aspire to a career in music, and soon Lucien Ginsburg had transformed himself into Serge Gainsbourg (note: Gainsbourg is not a discarding of the Jewish surname, but rather a more French spelling of Ginzburg).

By the mid-60s Gainsbourg was one of France’s best-known musicians, and in 1967, on the eve of the Six Day War, a cultural attaché from the Israeli Embassy in Paris commissioned him to pen a military march to be translated into Hebrew. Gainsbourg contributed “Le Sable et le Soldat” (“Sand and Soldier”), but the song went unused for 35 years and has only recently been rediscovered. In the song Gainsbourg’s famously ironic lyrics are absent and uncharacteristically somber lyrics reveal: “Yes, I will defend the sand of Israel, the land of Israel” and “All the Goliaths emerging from the pyramids/will back away from the Star of David”.

In 1975 Gainsbourg released the album “Rock Around the Bunker”, a collection of rock-a-billy tunes that deal exclusively with the subject of the Nazis and his experiences as young boy. Here, the lyrics are thick with irony and black humor as Gainsbroug calls the Yellow Star “a sheriff’s badge,” and sings, “I was born under a lucky star, a yellow one.” He continued to find controversial ways of exploring his religion with the 1981 song “Juif et Dieu” (“Jew and God”) in which tries to prove that God is Jewish by pointing out that since Jesus was Jewish “by logic, if God is his father, he, too, is Jewish”. Earlier in the song he also declares that Jesus “n’avait rien d’un Aryen” (“had nothing Aryan about him”).Although French-born and revered by the French it’s clear from Gainsbourg’s music that he always felt like a bit of an outsider. And it seems it’s at these moments when he most identifies with his Jewish culture- even while struggling with it. But as he asserts in the song “Yellow Star”, “It’s difficult for a Jew, the law of life is to struggle.”
