As the graphic Design Director for this project, I wanted to build a competition uniform that strengthens the athlete’s confidence. One that fits their energy and freestyle individualism as well as it fits their body. Giving the mental edge with a showpiece for their team, their country, and for the Columbia brand.
The resulting concepts were built from feedback and observations from athletes, trainers, country representatives, and Columbia representatives. I championed the concepts and work through the complicated political waters that surrounded this high-profile project.
COUNTRY IDENTITYart direction • design
Created color and graphic theme palettes to celebrate each country’s identity. This gives a unique look to each country even though the unform’s design is shared by all of them.

INTERIOR EMBLEMart direction
Russia illustration
Reflected the athletes’ wild enthusiasm by concepting the use of bold internal graphics. In illustrating the Russia emblem, I worked closely with the illustrator for Canada and the USA graphics to match our artwork styles for all three countries.
SNOW CAMOart direction
Concept development and art direction for mogul camouflage patterns. The patterns visually break up the skier’s uniform masking unwanted leg movement. Custom variations designed for the American, Canadian and Russian teams.
DETAILSart direction
Thoughtfulness was shown in attention to details. Here I art directed the trims design.
NECK LABELart direction
Shaped the creation of a label to respect the traditions of sport and the importance of this event.

Attending to small, but important, details I noticed many athletes wrote their name on old uniforms to help identify them. Writeable labels provide a place to put a name, or favorite words of inpsiration.
CHANGEABLE PATCHESart direction • design
The concept of individual expression is realized in these changeable patches. I guided a balance between formal and novelty designs and created the artwork for Russia patches.
BRANDINGart direction

Maximized the visibility of the brand’s logo by using alternate left and right size placements. Kept the area around the logo uncluttered to improve readability. Reviewed competition footage to inform best placement.

Youth appeal was increased in this Convert jacket with this retro music player graphic.
Humor is subtle in this Nagel-inspired print. Taking the bikini clad model and putting her in outerwear.
Expanded sales were acheived with this printed interpretation of strongly
selling girl’s plaid patterns.
OUTERWEAR GRAPHICSPROJECT ROLES: design • illustration
Added visual interest to a Women’s jacket was acheived by creating this highly graphic border print.
To expand a jacket’s organic aesthetic I hand drew this
mountain scape lining print.
Character was added to this slick faced waterpoof fabric by creating a denim texture print.
Softened the character of this Women’s jacket with a script font, overlayed textures, and saturated colors.
Capturing an expensive technique on a budget was achieved by matching artwork and fabric pattern size. This minimized fabric waste.
WWD illustration
Completed in a day, these illustrations accompanied an article from the popular apparel periodical Women’s Wear Daily. The sketches were made from technical drawings. Actual samples were not yet made.

Understanding the consumer is essential for successful work. For this southeastern U.S. consumer themes include Americana, fishing, tropical prints, and graphic stripes. The American Tradition tee was an immediate success and is frequently offered in current seasons.

Led the creation of Columbia Sportswear’s graphic standards and supporting manuals establishing logo placements, size, and color for apparel, equipment and accessories across the global organization.
The internal labelling system was redesigned to create a unique look and identity in the market.
MOLDED TRIMS Art directed the redesign of zipper pulls and buttons. Created collections to align with product families. The entire Westmoreland Park collection is outlined, below, as an example of a complete story.

BRAND REDESIGN
These examples are from a deep dive analyzing Columbia’s graphic standards. The project began evaluating the strengths and weaknesses of the existing product branding. Findings from consumer focus groups were included in this evaluation.
Key competitors’ brand and technology storytelling systems were analyzed. Original, creative brand designs came from the analysis. They feature simplified information and improved on brand logo visibility. They also use iconography to describe the key functional benefit to consumers.
PACKAGING & PRODUCTCOOLING SLEEVE
In evaluating the redesign of technical gloves, I studied retail environments. Observing that the product logo area is often obstructed by price stickers, the brand logo was moved to the top of the gauntlet. This allows for a clean read of the brand mark.

To promote a new cooling fabric technology, over a million arm sleeves were created as promotional giveaways. To minimize costs, I created a repeating technology pattern with an incorporated logo that eliminated the need for an external screen print and maximized fabric usage.
These efforts lowered production costs by over $100,000 from the original proposal.

TECHNOLOGY PATTERNSI’ve contributed to developing many of Columbia Sportswear pattern technologies. As an example of this partnership, five technology design patents are filed under my name.
Reflective Warmth: This pattern explores the balance between reflective surface area and fabric that allows for moisture breathability.
Moisture Management: This pattern’s function is to wick moisture through printed channels.
“What Knot To Do In The Greater Outdoors” is an iPhone application that guides users on how to tie any knot they could ever need. Designing the look for this app, I chose a neutral-textured background to imply ruggedness and accent the brightly colored ropes.
Creating Symbols of the ropes in Adobe Illustrator allowed for detailed knot illustrations to be drawn with basic vector lines. This made it easy for design staff to jump in and help create the hundreds of step-by-step illustrations in this app.

Designing for 50 bicycles challenged our two-person team to develop multiple graphic concepts. I found a balance between making each series unique and building a unified look.

This in-depth trip report explored the denim landscape in Los Angeles. It included an overview of washing techniques, an interview, and recommended retail stops in the area.
Playful illustrations accent this young-adult book advising musicians and bands how to make it big.

I used a sophisticated, easy-to-follow, layout and design approach to match the high quality of the training. With these materials the company was competitive against significantly larger companies.
MOUNTAIN HARDWEARPROJECT ROLES: design • illustration
The work shown here represents some of my favorite conceptual pieces for Mountain Hardwear. The series was playful and irreverent. I used Hardwear’s nut icon and played with it as a symbol representing the outdoors, elevation, and ruggedness. Using the icon in this way pushed past the predictable landscape of Hardwear’s competitors in the outdoor industry.
These two postcard designs play with Portland clichés: tattoos and cycling.

These two rendering styles appeal to dyed-in-the-wool car buffs and sell roughly equal amounts of tees and mugs.
