INT. JOHNS ROOM -NIGHT1 1

A single white cursor blinks on a black screen. A shortwhile later, CACHK. The cursor changes to the letter r. Uand n appear shortly after. This continues until is shown,run legacy.exe. CACHK. A new line, generate login? appears.Yes is typed. CACHK. A mass of lines materialize andscroll up the screen rapidly. At the end the column reads,login generated: lg:NuRr2937 pw:12f365G. A white portion ofthe screen is seen. It shows a web page requiring a loginand a password. The cursor moves into the dialogue box,CLICK. Deliberately, letters are typed: N, u, R, r-.

JOHNS face and shoulders protrude from the darkness beyond,lit only by the blue light emitted from the monitor. BLEEP.A pop-up appears. It reads, From MARK: Did you do it yet? Ireally need to pass this class. BLEEP Another. FromZARA: Are you still having a game tonight?

John, Mark, and Cory sit around a round table. There is roomfor one more person. Cans of soda litter the table. Eachperson carries a hand of cards. The game is Texas Holdem.

A single light hangs above them, illuminating only the smallarea. Music blares.

MARKFold.

Cory looks confident, like she cant hold back his smile.

JOHNSo whats it going to be? Iguarantee you its not going to

win.

Cory loses his apparent confidence and replaces it withdistress.

CORY(disappointed)

Well then. I guess I have to...See what it is that beat me.

John looks at Cory with skepticism and sets down his cardsmotioning toward the pot.

JOHNFlush.

CORYNot so fast, Johnny. That belongsto me.

Cory sets down his cards.

CORY (CONTD)Flush. Straight.

MARKBeginners luck...

The doorbell RINGS, underwhelming the music.

BRUCE (O.S.)Hey ass-hat! Theres someone atthe door!

The doorbell rings again.

JOHNWhy didnt you answer it!?

John runs up the stairs.

John swings open the door, rushing.

JOHNOh hey. Uh. Come in come in.Were in the basement; this way.Do you play poker?

JOHNWell youre just in time. Therocket that will deliver theH.A.T.R.S. is about to go up.

ZARAWhat are those?

JOHNOh the Hakensonn Automatic ThermalRedirection System. It willreverse global warming, granted thegovernment doesnt screw it up. Itlaunches in five minutes. Come on,lets go.

John and Zara proceed to the basement. As they are walkingdownstairs...

Cory pushes the buttons a few times and the TV changeschannels until the it gets to 204, a news station covers thelaunch. On the TV...

we have planned for you.

NEWS WOMAN BOBBIEThats right, Stacey, tonights airis dedicated exclusively to thecoverage of the H.A.T.R.S. Launchat one of NASAs top secretfacilities somewhere in the mid-

west.

STACEYIf you dont know already,H.A.T.R.S. is an acronym forHakensonn Automatic ThermalRedirection System. The system is

composed of small discs that whenactivated will reflect the sunsheat back out into space, insteadof into the earth.

BOBBIEThis day, March 11, 2013, will beremembered for all eternity,

written into the history books asthe day the human race was saved byan American scientist.

Stacey holds his hand to his head, almost as if trying to

plug his ears, and nods.

STACEYBobbie, I must interrupt you.Ladies and gentlemen, the momentyouve all been waiting for...Count with me. Ten. Nine. Eight.Seven. Six-

The house shakes violently for an instant. The lightsflicker. Some jars fall on the floor and break. All isquiet.

MARKOK...

The house shakes again, longer this time. The lights flickerand go out. All is quiet. No one makes a sound. Soon the

whine of a capacitor charging grows louder and louder. Ittakes a moment to fully charge, the pitch gets higher andhigher until it reaches the threshold of human hearing.Still it continues. A moment.

INT. JOHNS LIVING ROOM - DAY13 13

ZARAIm telling you, nobody can justdisappear.

MARKIf thats true, tell me where Johnis!

CREAK. The basement door swings open into the living room.Mark, Sam, Cory, and Zara stare in amazement at John. Helooks as though he had just woken up, with messy hair and

wrinkled clothes.

JOHN(Groggy)

Why didnt you guys wake me? Oh...

I had the weirdest dream. I was inthis-

MARKWake you? Youve been gone for twodays!

JOHNWhat are you talking about?

MARKDont you remember?

JOHNI guess not.

ZARAYou said something about a dream,What was it?

JOHNOh, I woke up in the middle of astreet. The newspaper said it wassome time if the future, andeverything was in ruins. The girlsaid the sun was coming up and

thats when I woke up.

ZARAHmm. Maybe you should rest for a

while. You look like youve beenthrough a lot.

JOHNBut I just woke up.

Mark escorts John to his room.

INT. JOHNS ROOM - DAY14 14

MARKHere take this. It will help yousleep.

Mark opens a small box with what looks like a piece ofchocolate in it and hands it to John. John reluctantly takesa bite. Mark exits the room. Zara enters.

ZARAJohn. That dream you had? I had avision of the same thing, although-

Johns vision fades

ZARA (CONTD)-not the same scenario. Johntheres something bigger going onhere. John?

Johns vision fades more. Then slowly, he comes to.

INT. ROOM - DAY15 15

A stale and dusty room As Johns vision fades back in. He islaying on a bed with the mystery woman beside him. He wakesup.

MYSTERY WOMANOh good. Youre awake. I didntthink you were going to make it.

JOHNWho are you?

MYSTERY WOMANThats not important right now.What is important is your safety.

JOHNWhere am I?

MYSTERY WOMANYou dont know?

John looks around, dazed and confused

MYSTERY WOMAN (CONTD)Youre in Sera. You took quite arisk going out in the sun like thatyou know. If it wasnt for meyoud be dead right now.

JOHNThe sun?

MYSTERY WOMANYes... the sun. Youre really outof it.

JOHNSera? Whats Sera?

MYSTERY WOMANSera is whats left of this place.Ever since the HATRS backfired.

JOHNThe HATRS? They were going tolaunch them.

MYSTERY WOMANOh honey you are out of it. TheHATRS were launched almost tenyears ago.

JOHN(Fully awake)

Hold on. Ten years? Just an hourago I was watching it on TV. Howlong have I been asleep?

MYSTERY WOMANAbout a day.

JOHNSo what happened to the ten yearsI'm missing?

MYSTERY WOMANI dont know what your talkingabout. I found you in the middleof the street.

JOHNOK. Lets just say for a momentthat Im from the year 2013, whenthe HATRS were launched. Whathappened? What disaster did this?

MYSTERY WOMANWell I guess I can play along withthat. The HATRS worked, loweringthe earths average temperature.

JOHNGood! I was hoping they would.

MYSTERY WOMANNot so fast. Something happened intheir first year of operation thatchanged them. Instead of keepingthe temperature in check, theystarted operating with a mind oftheir own.

JOHNLike they were supposed to.

MYSTERY WOMANNot quite. They started reflectingheat back at the earth instead ofaway. Within weeks, water wasevaporating off the streets. Riotsbroke out. Looting, killing;society was deteriorating. Withina month people were dying of heatstroke. The ones who didnt died ofradiation sickness. The onlysurvivors were the ones who wentunderground. We waited. Until the

temperature started to drop. Justas quickly as it started thedisaster ceased, and what was leftof the human race was allowed tolive again. And here we are, livingon the edge of extinction. Lessthan five percent of us are left.We do what we can to survive. Wedo what we must because we can.

JOHNAnd the HATRS are still

malfunctioning?

MYSTERY WOMANIn a way. They reverse every sooften, shifting the climate to

winter overnight. As you canimagine, its very hard to growanything here. We survive off ofartificially produced nutrients.

JOHNIs there a way to disengage theHATRS?

MYSTERY WOMANOnce maybe. But that time has comeand gone, Im afraid. Come tothink of it, the only time there

was ever a chance was back in 2013when they were working right. Notmuch we can do now huh?

JOHNUh. Yeah.

MYSTERY WOMANOh well. Come on. Youd better getsome rest. I have a spare bed in

the other room, you can stay therefor the night.

INT. JOHNS HOUSE - NIGHT16 16

MARKHow can he just disappear again?

ZARAI dont know!

MARK

You were the last one to see him-

BOOM! The bedroom door slams open. Its John.

JOHNZara!

MARKWhere have YOU been?

JOHNZara what did you see in yourvision?

MARKYou have visions?

JOHNWhere were they?

ZARAI dont know. But I saw a signfor Mr. Odds Barbecue.

MARKI dont have a car. I walked.

JOHNIts Sunday. You guys waited

around for me for three days? Youguys are weird.

ZARAShut up guys, lets go.

MARKI still dont know what you guysare talking about.

JOHNRemember the dream I had? Well it

wasnt a dream. I really was gone.

I was in the future. Zarasvisions confirmed it. If we letthe HATRS continue to operate theearth will become a desolate

wasteland.

ZARAAre we going to talk about it orare we going to do something?

MARKZaras right. Lets go.

The trio walk to the drive way where Zaras car is humblywaiting. Inside the car, the temperature gauge reads 79.

MARKI dont see it. Its too dark.

John rests his head on the window, staring out as each housegoes by.

JOHNStop.

ZARAWhat?

JOHNI said stop. I think I seesomething.

MARKWhat John?

JOHNThat scientists name. Was it Hak

something?

ZARAYeah Hakensonn. Remember, you told

me what HATRS stands for.

JOHNYes, of course.

MARKWhy John?

JOHN

That mailbox has his name on it.

MARKWell what are we waiting for?

Zara puts the car in park and shuts it off.

INT. DR. HAKENSONNS HOUSE - DAY18 18

DING DONG. A moment. DING. DONG. DING DONG DING DONG.

ZARA (O.S.)

I guess hes not home.

CHK KUNG. Heavy bolts echo as they release the door.KSHHHHHHH. The door swings open. Zara, John, and Mark enterthe house

KSHHHH-KLUNK.

DR. HAKENSONN (O.S.)Just a minute!

Footsteps. CRASH. More footsteps. Dr. Hakensonn rounds acorner towards the trio.

DR. HAKENSONN (CONTD)Who are you? How did you get inhere?

JOHNDidnt you let us in?

DR. HAKENSONNWhat? No.

JOHNBut the door-

DR. HAKENSONNThe door? Dammit. That thing isalways malfunctioning. I cantfigure out why. Well now thatyoure here, what can I do for you?

JOHN

I was- We were hoping you couldtell us something about the HATRS.

DR. HAKENSONNYes?

JOHNAre they fit to operate? You madethem right?

DR. HAKENSONNOf course I did. And yes theyreperfectly functional.

JOHNJust like your door?

DR. HAKENSONNThe HATRS are a scientificendeavor, not just a piece of ahouse.

JOHNRight now it might seem crazy, butI believe the HATRS are going to

malfunction and dramaticallyincrease the global temperature.

DR. HAKENSONNNonsense! Where on earth did youget that from?

JOHNA few nights ago my friends and I

witnessed a flash of lightaccompanied by a small tremor. I

woke up from the incident in thefuture.

DR. HAKENSONN

What the hell are you talkingabout. Theres no such thing astime trav- wait. When did you saythis happened?

JOHNA few nights ago. On Friday.

DR. HAKENSONNAround eight or so?

JOHNYes, just before the HATRS were

launched.

DR. HAKENSONN(Seriously)

Come with me.

INT. HAKENSONNS LAB - DAY19 19

The Doctors lab is full of different kinds of machinery,things with lights, things that go BEEP and an array of

machining equipment. Dr. Hakensonn picks up a small disceerily similar to a CD.

DR. HAKENSONNThis is what I was working on whenthe HATRS launched. Its theprototype of what I like to callthe device. It is designed to

manipulate the fabric of space andtime.

JOHNIt looks like a CD.

DR. HAKENSONNThats because it is. This is

merely the program that runs themachine. I was working on itFriday night when it overloaded.That was the light you saw. Andyou being here right now concludesthat it worked! Unfortunately the

machine was destroyed in theprocess.

JOHNWhat about the HATRS?

DR. HAKENSONN

Ah, yes. You said you saw thefuture?

JOHNYes. The HATRS had malfunctionedand killed almost the entirepopulation.

DR. HAKENSONNThats impossible. Although just a

moment ago I thought time travelwas impossible. Tell me what yousaw.

JOHNRight before I passed out from theheat, I saw shimmering in the sky.

DR. HAKENSONNYes, thats the HATRS switchingtheir polarity, thus the directionof thermal reflection. But that

means they were working. They werefunctional.

ZARA

Ive seen visions too. I sawsomething different.

DR. HAKENSONNWhat is it that you saw?

ZARAA solar flare.

Yes I see. Yes that would explainit. Yes. NO! Unless. Yes ofcourse!

MARKWhat!

DR. HAKENSONNA solar flare of the right

magnitude and intensity would alterthe inner mechanics of the HATRS.You two are sure of what youveseen?

JOHNYes.

ZARAOf course.

DR. HAKENSONN (CONTD)The solar flare is inevitable. You

must deactivate the HATRS. Themain console is located in a securefacility just east of here.

JOHNHow will we find it?

DR. HAKENSONNIts the big white building. Youcant miss it.

Dr. Hakensonn scribbles on a piece of paper and hands it toJohn.

DR. HAKENSONN (CONTD)Here, take this. Youll need it.I have reason to believe theyre

watching me. I must stay here.

JOHNWhat am I supposed to do with this?

DR. HAKENSONN

Youll know when you get there.Go.

The trio stands in the room for a moment longer, as if aboutto ask a question.

DR. HAKENSONN (CONTD)GO!

Zaras car pulls up to a small unattended gate with a cameraand a speaker, almost like a fast food drive through.

SPEAKERPositive ID required.

MARKWhat does that mean?


ZARAGive me that piece of paper thatDr. Hakensonn gave you.


JOHNShow the camera.

Zara holds the paper to the camera.

SPEAKERPositive ID Req- Positive ID match.Clearance level ten identified.Welcome.

JOHNWere in. Where the heck do theykeep the console?

MARKYou guys go find it. Ill waithere and keep an eye on the car. Ohhere take this, just in case.

Mark hands John a tire iron.

JOHNWhy would I need this?

MARKWell if you find a bolt that needsloosened or something.

JOHNOK...

MARKJust take it.

John and Zara slowly walk down the hall, until the student isbeyond the line of sight, then they make a run for it.

ZARAYou honestly thought that would

work?

JOHNIt did, didnt it?

ZARAYeah good point. The sooner we getto the console the better. Thereit is.

JOHNAre you sure? I only see threedoors.

ZARAJohn thats your right. The fifthdoor is on the left.

JOHNAh.

John grabs the handle.

JOHN (CONTD)Are you ready?

ZARANo, but what choice do we have?

JOHNAlright then, here we go.

INT. ROOM - DAY

John and Zaras faces are lit only by the ambient light fromthe hall as the enter the room. CLICK. The door calmlyshuts behind them. Nothing but darkness.

JOHNHelp me find a light switch. Feelaround the walls.

ZARAWhat walls, I feel nothing but-

FLIP. The switch is activated.

EXT. FIELD - DAY

Johns hand on a floating switch. John and Zara stand in themiddle of a scrap yard.

ZARA-air.

JOHNWhoa.

ZARAWhat just happened?

JOHNIt must be an artificialenvironment chamber. Ive readabout these. The only way out is

through the other side. Lets go.

John takes his first step into the dirt. The moment his foottouches the ground, a deafening siren blares.

SPEAKER (O.S.)Warning. Personnel limit exceeded.More than one personnel detected.Warning. Chamber shutdowninitiated. Chamber shutdown in two

minutes.

JOHN

Oh shit! RUN!

ZARAWhat about the HATRS?

JOHNIf the chamber shuts down while

were inside well die! Just run!

John and Zara run for their lives through the maze of mangledcars in the yard.

ZARA

John! Look!

JOHNWhat?

ZARAIs that the console?

ZARAIts our only option. This is theonly chance to stop the disaster!

JOHNAlright. Ill need to reprogramthe console to override the system.

ZARAOK just hurry!

John runs over to the small computer sitting on the ground,lowering to his knees while taking his phone out of hispocket. He fumbles with a short cord as he attempts to

couple his phone with the computer. He plugs it in.

SPEAKER (O.S.)Unauthorized access to HATRSconsole. Use of excessive forceimminent. Warning. Thirty secondsuntil chamber shutdown. Twentynine. Twenty eight.

ZARAJohn hurry!

JOHN

Ah screw this! Give me that tireiron!

ZARAHere

Zara tosses the iron to John.

JOHNLets get this over with!

John takes a step back. (If there are better tools ofdestruction) John looks over, and sees a *. He tosses the

iron and picks up the *.

JOHN (CONTD)Augh!

John swing with all his might as his face contorts. (Likethe office space scene) The iron strikes the computer,smashing in the side wall. Another swing. This time on thetop. John keeps swinging until...

The environment flickers as if a fluorescent light is goingout. Parts of the ground give way to the steel floor of theprevious room.

SPEAKERWarning. Code red. Warning.HATRS offline. HATRS offline.Chamber shutdown in ten seconds.

Thew sky rips apart revealing just a few steel beams.

ZARAJohn!

Zara points to a car with an exit sign over its door.

JOHNGet in the car!

SPEAKEREight. Seven.

John and Zara sprint towards the car.

SPEAKER (CONTD)Six. Five.

Zara jumps in the car.

SPEAKER (CONTD)Four. Three.

John jumps in.

SPEAKER (CONTD)Two. One.

The car door closes.

EXT. IRIS RESEARCH FACILITIES - DAY

John and Zara are instantly transported to Zaras car in theparking lot, Mark still standing outside.

JOHNMark! Get in!

Mark, leaning on the car, jumps in reflex and spins around toface the car.

MARKWhat? How did you get in there!?

JOHNIts a long story, just get in!

MARKWhats the rush?

BOOM! A chunk of the facility shatters outward in a blackand orange ball of flame and debris.

MARK (CONTD)Oh shit!

Mark swings open the back door and leaps into the back seat.

MARK (CONTD)GO GO GO!!!

Zara punches the gas, the engine roaring, the tires smoking.

The car speeds off through the parking lot as anotherexplosion forces itself into existence.

INT. ZARAS CAR - DAY

MARKZara slow down! I think were farenough away.

SCREECH. The bodies in the car lurch forward as Zara Punchesthe brake.

EXT. ROAD - DAY

The car comes to a stop, leaning heavily forward, thenlurching back.

JOHNJeez, not that fast.

ZARASorry my nerves are on full alert.

MARK

Im getting out before you decideto go racing again.

ZARANo need, were safe now.

MARKStill, I gotta pee. Do you knowhow sudden this is for me?

Mark exits the vehicle

JOHNGood point. Zara, you might neednew tires after that one. I needsome fresh air.

John and Zara get out of the car.

JOHN (CONTD)Zara we did it. We destroyed theHATRS console.

ZARAYeah. We did. How about lets getsome ice cream?

MARK

Im up for it!

JOHN

Sounds good to me.

ZARA (CONTD)Theres an old ice cream shop justdown the road.

MARKIve had enough of the car. Lets

walk.

As the trio walks down the street, the camera lowers downpast the dashboard to reveal that the temperature gauge nowreads 112.

ZARAIs it hot out here, or is it just

me?

JOHNYeah it is. The sun mustve comeout.
