2010 Census of Population and Housing
Preliminary Results
Zambia records a population of 13,046,508 persons, 2010
Census Preliminary results reveal!
According to the preliminary results from the
2010 Census of Population and Housing, the
population of Zambia has increased to 13,
046,508 persons from 9,885,771 persons in the
year 2000. Of the 13,046,508 persons,
6,394,455 (49 percent) were male while
6,652,053 (51 pe rcent ) w ere fema le.

At provincial level, Lusaka had the largestpopulation with 2,198,996 persons, followedby Copperbelt with 1,958,623, Northern with1,759,600, Easte rn w ith 1,707,731 andSou thern w ith 1,606,793 persons. The p rovinc e
with the least population was North-westernwith 706,462 persons. Weste rn Provinc e ha d881,524 while Lua pula ha d 958,976 persons.

Eligible Voters
The C ensus results further show tha t there
we re 6,069,753 tota l numb er of e ligible vo ters
(i.e. any pe rson a ge d 18 years and ab ove) in
2010 representing 47 percent of the total
Zambian population. Results show that
Lusaka Province had the highest share of
eligible voters at 19 percent followed by
Copperbelt Province at 17 percent whereas
Northern and Eastern provinces had 12
pe rc ent o f eligib le voters ea c h. Southern
province had a share of 11 percent; Central
province had 10 percent while Luapula and
Western provinces had 7 pe rcent ea c h. The
province with the least share of eligible voters
was North-western Province with 5 percent.

INFLATION
January Inflation rises to 9.0 percent
The a nnua l rat e o f infla tion, as me asured b y
the all items Consumer Price Index (CPI),
increased to 9.0 percent in January 2011,
from 7.9 perc ent in Dec em ber, 2010. The rise
is attributed to increases in the cost of both
food and non-food items.

Changes in annual inflation rates for CPI Main Groups
Between December 2010 and January 2011,
annual inflation rates increased for Food,
beverages and tobacco; Household fuel and
lighting; Furniture and household goods;
Med ica l c are; Transpo rt and c om munica tion;
and O ther go od s and services. The a nnua l
inflation rates reduced for Clothing and
footwea r; and Rec reation and educ ation.

4.4 percent in Dec em be r, 2010.
Non-food inflation
The annual no n-food inflat ion rate wa s reco rded a t 12.8 pe rcent in Janua ry, 2011. This is an

National Average Prices of Selected Products
A comparison of retail prices between
December 2010 and January 2011, shows
that the national average price of a 25 kg
ba g of w hite b reakfast mea lie m eal reduced
by 1.1 percent , from K53, 187 to K52,605
while the average price of the same bag of
white roller mealie meal slightly increased by
0.1 pe rcent, from K37,386 to K37,408. The
national average price of a 20 liter tin of
maize grain increased by 2.6 percent, fromK21, 044 to K21, 601.
The na tional averag e p rice of 1kg of d ried
bream (fish) increased by 12.8 percent, from
K35, 275 to K39, 806. The na tiona l avera ge
price of 1kg of tomatoes increased by 10.8
percent, from K3, 597 to K3,984, while the
average price of 1kg of
cabbage(vegetable) increased by 30.6
perc ent , from K1,554 to K2,030. The na tiona l
average price of a 1kg of dried beans also
increased by 7.4 percent, from K9.976 to K10,716.

INTERNATIONAL MERCHANDIZE TRADE
December 2010 records Trade Surplus
Zambia recorded a trade surplus valued at
about K840.6 Billion in Dec em ber 2010. This
means that the country exported more in
December 2010 than it imported in value
terms. Since Janua ry 2010, the c ountry ha s
had monthly trade surpluses with the highest
valued at about K1,147.7 Billion in March, 2010.

Zambias Metal Exports and Non-Traditional Exports
(NTEs) December and November, 2010
There ha s been a ma rginal inc rease in thetotal value of exports to K3,220.8 billion fromab out K2,971.8 billion be twe en Dec emb erand Nove mb er 2010. This resulted in thecountrys ever dominant metal productsrecording a slight increase in revenue ofabo ut 4.9 pe rcent in nominal terms. Theoverall contribution of metal products to the
total export earnings in December andNovember 2010 averaged about 84.8pe rc ent in both m onths.
In terms of percentage contribution to theto ta l export ea rnings, NTEs rec orded anaverage of about 15.1 percent in bothmonths.

Com munity (SADC) regional g rouping wa s
the largest market for Zambias total exports,
accounting for 17.4 and 18.3 percent in
Dec emb er and Novemb er 2010, respe ct ively.
Within SADC, South Afric a wa s the dom inantmarket in both months with 57.4 and 45.1
percent, respectively. Congo (DR) was
second in both months with 23.4 and 27.1
percent, respectively. Other notable markets
were Zimbabwe, Mauritius, Malawi and
Tanzania.
Asia was the second largest market for
Zambias total exports, accounting for 15.9
and 19.4 percent in December and
November 2010, respectively. Within Asia,
China was the dominant market in both
months with 93.3 and 91.9 percent,
respec tively. The United Arab Emirates wa s
second in both months with 3.1 percent in
December and 6.7 percent in November
2010, respectively. Other notable markets
were India, Philippines, Israel and Hong Kong.
The C om mo n Ma rket fo r Eastern and
Southe rn Africa (COM ESA) g roup ing o f
countries was the third largest market for
Zambias total exports accounting for 7.5 and
11.0 percent in December and November
2010, respectively. Within COMESA, Congo(DR) was the dominant market in both
months with 54.4 percent in December and
45.1 percent in November 2010. Zimbabwe
was second with 22.8 percent in December
2010 and 19.3 percent in November 2010.
Other notable markets were Burundi, Malawi,
Ma uritius, Kenya and Egyp t.
The Europ ea n Union (EU) was the fourth
largest market for Zambias total exports
accounting for 4.5 and 5.5 percent in
Dece mb er and Novemb er 2010, respe c tively.
Within the EU, Belgium was the dominant
market in December 2010 with 40.6 percent
while the United Kingdom was the dominant
market in November 2010 with 32.7 percent.
