MESSAGE

In an ever-changing and evolving world like ours, it is vital to identify strategic sectors and, through research and innovation, equip them with the highest potential, adapting to the unparalleled challenges that our society faces. In Aragon, logistics is one of those key sectors which, thanks to the work of centers like ZLC, has already achieved a level of quality that makes it competitive internationally. The fact is logistical innovation is vital to sustain a transport system that needs to adapt to climate challenges or the ever more pressing issue of the collapse of the great cities. This must not be done at the expense of its characteristic flexibility or optimising its performance and efficiency. This new paradigm requires the innovation undertaken and taught by ZLC must be at the heart of any transformation.Aragon is destined to lead this comprehensive overhaul of the logistics sector, through a private sector that is already focused on the knowledge transfer as a key factor in sector growth and, by extension, growth in our region. ZLC is not only characterised by its research and fruitful synergy with the private sector, but is also, through its collaboration with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, placing training in this area on the international stage, ensuring creditable partnerships among the youth of the world that put Aragon and Zaragoza on the map as a direct result of the quality of the studies pursued. In all these cases, the presence of ZLC translates the work undertaken here at the center into a launchpad for logistical evolution and, consequently, the evolution of our region.

Maru DíazMinistry of Science, University, Knowledge Society, Government of Aragón.President of Zaragoza Logistics Center

Logistics in Aragon continues to fortify and integrate factors to be a key driver of the regional economy, without forgetting that they also constitute a strategic node for international transactions and relationships between companies worldwide, evolving in current areas such as digitalization and sustainability. Zaragoza Logistics Center, a foundation of the Government of Aragon, Ibercaja and affiliated to the University of Zaragoza and MIT, is developing its potential in these areas, thanks to being a member of the MIT Global SCALE Network.

At the beginning of 2019, ZLC celebrated the opening ceremony of new premises, located in EXPO Zaragoza Empresarial; with modern and updated facilities, offering greater visibility to ZLC and more enhanced dynamism, by integrating students with professors and staff. As Director, I congratulate the efforts of the entire team on the organization of the XV anniversary of the ZLC Foundation and the opening ceremony for the new premises, an event that welcomed more than 800 people from the business world to the Congress Palace, an afternoon highly significant for us all.

Throughout the year ZLC has been tackling new challenges both academic and research -wise. Within the training programs, ZLC continues to maintain its consolidation of the MDSC, ZLOG and ZLOGb master programs, programs that resolutely remain at the top according to national and international rankings for yet another year. ZLC has set itself a new challenge for next year, with the launching in October of a new training itinerary called GSCM (Global Master of Engineering in Logistics and Supply Chain Management). Students receive a global training by studying in all three centers across three continents (ZLC, MIT and MISI). Furthermore, our PhD program has a new graduate this year, Beatriz Acero, who I warmly congratulate for her achievement and success. The executive training of ZLC is also expanding across all continents, having received groups of executives from Latin America, Africa, Europe and Asia throughout the course of 2019 and building customer loyalty with the welcome addition of both remote and face-to-face courses.

Susana ValDirector, Zaragoza Logistics Center (ZLC)

TALENT HUB FOR SUPPLY CHAIN

At the research level, ZLC has increased its collaboration with the private-sector, thus strengthening ties directly with the industry. Regarding projects within the European Commission, we have maintained the same level of activity, becoming, for the first time, coordinators of a large European project, SPROUT, for the innovation of solutions to improve urban mobility.

In addition, throughout 2019 ZLC has signed different agreements with national and international entities that are already paying off in terms of collaboration. Examples of this are the agreements made with Motorland, the Africa Resource Center (ARC, Nigeria), UNO Logística, Kristiania University (Norway), T-ZIR and SARGA. The collaboration with these organizations, together with the participation of ZLC in congresses, conferences, fairs and seminars, have raised the public profile of ZLC, and considerably enhanced its visibility, with the knock-on effect of having a positive impact on our balance sheet.

Last but most certainly not least, we mustn’t forget our professors, working for many hours outside the classrooms thanks to their active participation in international conferences. They collaborate as ambassadors in the dissemination of knowledge generated at ZLC. Our alumni too, who help us strengthen and expand the network of this great family, and the companies that collaborate with us in training, research and recruitment of profiles and students, where we see the continuous, sometimes unforgiving striving to reach our goals. And finally, I would like to mention the staff, and thank them wholeheartedly for their day-to-day dedication to current goals and those that are yet to come.

ZLC is located at “Dinamiza business park”, designed to meet the space and work needs of companies after the EXPO Zaragoza 2008. Dinamiza was designed as a window into the future for Zaragoza, in a unique area that operates as the city’s economic and leisure motor. Near the city centre, it occupies a strategical location by the AVE high-speed train station and the main road network, with a connection to the Airport. Also, it has become the economic business centre of Zaragoza where the City of Justice and the Aquarium are located, next to the Convention Centre, parks and sports areas. There are restaurants, hotels and a medical centre, with almost 3,000 employees working in different companies.

In 2008 the Spanish Ministry of Education and Science officially recognized ZLC as a Knowledge Transfer Office (KTO). ZLC is a member of the National Center of Excellence for research in the area of logistics and supply chain management, CNC LOGISTICA, that was created in 2006 by ZLC together with three other institutions. The participation of this center puts ZLC in a leading role to define and coordinate research, development and innovation initiatives across Spain in logistics and supply chain management.ZLC has the continued support of local savings bank Ibercaja and the European Social Fund in its activities.

ZLC has been awarded The Erasmus Charter for Higher Education (ECHE) by the European Commission. The ECHE provides the general quality framework for European and international cooperation activities, which a higher education institution (HEI) may carry out within the Erasmus+ Program. The award of an Erasmus Charter for Higher Education is a pre-requisite for all institutions wishing to participate in Erasmus+ and learning mobility of individuals and/or cooperation for innovation and good practices under the Program. The Charter is awarded for the full duration of the Program (2014-2020).
