With worn and dated facilities in an old and rather shabby building Shoeburyness Youth and Community Centre was no longer deemed fit for purpose. It was then that the local branch of Connexions, an organisation which provides a comprehensive service to meet young people’s needs for information, advice and support and which manages the centre decided enough was enough and put in for a ‘myplace’ grant.

Working on behalf of the Department for Children, Schools and Families, ‘myplace’ aims to deliver world class youth facilities driven by the active participation of young people and their views and needs. Successful with their application Connexions Shoeburyness were awarded a grant of £3 million for the design and build of a modern, cutting edge and fully equipped youth centre to replace the outdated building. Camal Architects of Cambridge were commissioned to design the new youth centre which is to house a full range of state of the art facilities including a sports hall, gym, IT suite, recording studio, garage, art room and restaurant. Their brief was to create a low energy, sustainable building that would be aesthetically pleasing, welcoming and robust, and that would meet the BREEAM (BRE Environmental Assessment Method) design and construction requirements of Southend Borough Council. When it came to the HVAC aspect of the build Scott Wilson Consulting, in conjunction with Camal Architects,

specified the use of Zehnder radiant heating and cooling panels.

Following best practice in sustainable design and environmental performance the installation of Zehnder radiant panels helped meet the demands of BREEAM, offering energy savings of more than 40% compared to other systems. This innovative technology also ensures extremely fast reaction times and provides a highly reactive system which is better able to achieve the desired room conditions with optimal efficiency. “Moreover with the dual function of heating in winter and cooling in summer within the single panel, together with the

environmental benefits of low running costs, low emissions and the ability to be operated by renewable energy resources, in this case an air source heat pump, the Zehnder panels ticked all our boxes” explains Matt Phillips, Associate at Scott Wilson Consulting.

On a more practical note “with a strategy to keep walls clear and maximise the space available radiant heating offered the ideal installation solution explains” Carl Rowland, Architect at Camal Architects. “Their integration into the ceiling meant that there was no infringement on room space, which was particularly important given the function and equipment requirements of many of the rooms. Moreover their smooth surface and quality finish makes them a visibly attractive HVAC system.”

Easy to install the Zehnder radiant panels are simply inserted in place of ceiling panels and their uncomplicated design can help reduce time on site. Graham Norris of Coolfactor (PH Jones), heating contractor on the project remarks: “With radiant panels in each room the installation of the HVAC system was very straightforward. The light weight structure of the panels and the fact that both connection pipes are located at the same end means that they are quick and simple to connect. They are also maintenance free when installed which is an added bonus.”

The new youth centre is now completed and will be officially open for use from the middle of July 2010. Carol Parker from Shoeburyness Connexions comments, “We are extremely pleased with the whole project and are looking forward to getting settled into the new centre. We’re especially keen to feel the benefits of a comfortable indoor climate whatever the weather outside and/or the activity inside.”
