mainitemswillbeinamenuaccessibleviatheBbutton,andarealwayscarried.YoualsohaveanAdventurePouch,receivednearthebeginningofthegame,whichholdssecondaryitemssuchasshields,medals,andBottles.Youcanaccesstheitemsinyourpouchbypressingthe-Button.HolditandusetheWiiRemotetopointattheitemyouwanttouse/equip.Shieldsareautomaticallyequipped,anddonotbecomeunequippedifyouselectsomethingelsetouse,likeaBottle.

Initially,yourAdventurePouchonlyhasfourslotsforstorage.Thatmeansifyoureceiveanitemduringyouradventureandnoslotstotakeit,itwill

Becauseofthisconcept,itwillbecomeimportanttovisittheItemCheckoftentoswitchoutunneededitems/shieldsdependingonwhereyouareheaded.Forinstance,youwouldn'tneedawoodenshieldinafieryregion,sofreeupaslotbyleavingitattheItemCheck.

=======Dashing=======

PerhapsthemostwelcomeadditiontotheZeldaseriesistheabilitytodash.Whenwalkingaroundnormally,holdtheAbuttonandyouwilldasharoundattwiceyournormalspeed.Whenyoustarttodash,theStaminaGaugewillappear(moreonthatbelow),makingitimpossibleforyoutodashindefinitely!Dashingisanessentialmovement:ifyoudashintoawallbelowaledge,youwilldoawallclimbbeforegrabbingthehighledge.Also,dashingbeforereachingagaptojumpacrosswillgiveyoumorerange,naturally.

========Swimming========

Asyouwouldexpect,youcanswiminthisgameaswell.Initially,youcanonly"swim"alongthesurfaceofabodyofwaterbymovingwiththeControlStick.However,onceyougettheWaterDragon'sScalelateron,youcandiveandREALLYswimunderthewater.Toswim,simplyholdAtodiveunderwaterandtilttheWiiRemotetomove.Toexitthewater,simplyswimovertoalow-lyingledgeorstepstoclimbout.

Whileswimming,anairmeterwillappearonthescreenandwill(very)slowlydeplete.Ifyouswimthroughanairbubble,foundeithernaturallyorby

defeatingFroaks(explosiveblowfishenemies),yourairwillbecompletelyreplenished.However,performingspinswhileunderwaterwillcostasizablechunkofyourair,souseitsparingly.

Speakingofwhich,whenyouareunderwater,youcanperformatorpedo-likespinattackbyflickingtheNunchukupanddown.Thiswillgiveyouashortspeedboost,plusitisusedtodefeatunderwaterenemiesandbreakthroughwoodenplankscoveringcertainpassages.Youcanalsousethespinattackasameanstoreachhighledgesyoucan'tnormallyclimbontofromthewater'ssurface,ortogetacrossthefencesinLakeFloria.Simplyangleyourselfata45-degreeangleandswimupwardtowardswhereyouwanttojump.Beforeyouhitthesurface,doaspinattackandyouwillshootoutofthewaterandthroughtheairforabriefmoment.Hopefullyyouwilllandwhereyouwanted!

=============StaminaGauge=============

OneofthemajorfeaturesinthisgameistheconceptofStamina,displayedinanonscreengauge.Whenyouperformcertainphysicallytaxingactionssuchasclimbing,pushingobjects,anddashing,thegaugewillstarttodeplete.Ifitbecomesempty,youwillloseyourenergyandbebarelyabletomove

untilthegaugerefillsautomatically.Ifyoustopperformingwhateveractionisusingyourstamina,thegaugewillrefillwithinacoupleofseconds.

Throughoutyourtravels,youwillfindglowinggreenitemsonthegroundknownasStaminaFruit.Pickoneupandyourstaminawillinstantlyrecoverfully.Usethisknowledgetoyouradvantagewhendashingacrossthelandscapeorclimbingonalongwall-basedpath.

=====================TheSkyandLoftwings=====================

Asyouprobablyhaveguessed,thegameissetinaworldhighabovetheclouds.Thestartingtown,Skyloft,servesasacentralhubforthegame.However,thereareplentyofsmallerislandsthroughoutthesky,withplentytoexploreorgainoneach.Thatbeingsaid,yourprimarymodeoftransportationisonthebackofaLoftwing(thegiantbirdsyouseeintheintroduction).

Ifyouareonanisland,youneedtodashandjumpofftheedgeofanisland,andpressDownontheControlPadquicklytosummonyourLoftwing.Youarethenfreetoflyprettymuchanywhereabovetheclouds,usingtheWiiRemotetocontrolmovement.Tospeedup,movedownwardinadivingtypeofmotion,

orwavetheWiiRemoteupanddowntoflapthewings,causingyoutogainaltitude.Youhavethree"charges"whichgiveyoualimitedspeedboost,andtheseregenerateafterabriefperiod.

Whileflyingaround,youmayencounterenemiesknownasOctorokssittingonrockclustersinthesky.Whenyouflynear,theywillshootrocksatyou;avoidthemoryouwillloseaheartuponimpact.Fortunatelyyoucangoupanddowninaltitudetoaidinthiscase.

Ifyouwanttolandonanisland,simplyflyoverit(holdBtoslowdowntheLoftwing),andpressDownontheControlPadtodive.Assoonasyougointoadive,youcantilttheWiiRemotetochangeyourdirectionofmovement,andpressBtousetheSailclothtofallstraightdownforapreciselanding.Of

course,onceyoudive,youcansummontheLoftwingbypressingDownagain.

Loftwingscannotflyatnight,soyouarerestrictedtotheislandyouareonatnightfall.Luckilyyoucancontrolthechangebetweennightandday,sothisshouldbeaminimalinconveniencetoyou.Also,theLoftwingscan'tflythroughthecloudsbelow.Theonlyexceptionsarewhenyouflyoveranopeningmadebyacolumnoflight,whereyoucandivedowntothatregionofthesurface.

===========TheSurface===========

Asyouwillexpect,mostofthegameplaytakesplacesacrossvariouslocalesonthesurfacebelowtheclouds.Youdoyourtypicalexplorationhere,includingthecompletionoftemplesandotherdungeons.Thereareplentyofenemiesanditems/rupeestobefound,aswellasGoddessCubes(moreonthatinalatersection).Youcanonlyreachthesurfacebydivingthroughcloudopeningsabove.Whenyoudivedowntoagivenregion,youcanpickaspecificareatolandprovidedyouactivatedtheBirdStatuesintheregion.

================YourMap/Beacons================

Whenyouareprettymuchanywhere,pressthe+buttontoviewyourmap.Itissurprisinglyaccurate,andevenrecordslandmarkssuchasindividualhouses,BirdStatues,andsoon.Granted,youmusthaveenteredthehouseorexaminedthestatue/stone/whateverforittoappear.

Whenyouareinadungeon,youwillinitiallybeabletoseeroomsyou'vebeeninonly.OnceyouobtaintheDungeonMap,therestofthemapwillbecomeavailable.

Onanyoutdoormap,youwillalsohavetheoptionofplacingabeacon.Whenyouareoutsideofthemapscreen,youwillthenbeabletoseealightbluebeaconinthedistance,correspondingtowhereyouplaceditonthemap.Youcanzoominoroutofthemaptoaffecttheaccuracyofyourbeacons.Youstartwithonlyonebeaconatatime(youmustremovetheoneyouplacedtoputitsomewhereelse),butyouwillgetuptofivelater.Whenthefeatureisintroduced,youmustusethebeacon,butlikeDowsing,it'snotarequirement.It'sjustagoodideawhencollectingchestsfromGoddessCubesornavigatinghiddenpaths.

============BirdStatues============

Throughoutthelandscape,youwillfindbird-shapedstatues.Ifyouexamineone,youwillbeabletosaveyourgame.Thatwayifyoudie/quitplaying,youwillreturntothislocationuponresumingyourgame.Ifyouareonthesurfaceinanoutdoorarea(asin,notinatemple),youcanalsousetheBirdStatuestoreturntotheskyabove.Youshouldactivateeverystatueyoucomeacross,evenifyoudon'tneedtosaveeverysingletime.

Thebigreasonisbecausewhenyoudivedowntothesurfaceagain,youcanlandatanylocationyou'veunlockedaBirdStatueatpreviously.Likewise,

thisistheonlywayyoucanreturntotheskyonceyougettothesurface.

================FightingEnemies================

Inthisgame,youwillnoticethatmanyoftheenemiesaremuchsmarterthistimearound.Thatmeanstheywillknowtoblockyourincomingattackswhilecounteringwiththeirown.Asaresult,swingingwildlywillprobablynotwinyoumanybattles.Youneedtoobservetheenemyandabuseanyweaknessesyounotice,suchasasoftspotunderahardshell,thesidenotblockedbyashield,andsoon.Oftentimesyoucanstunanenemybycounteringtheir

attackswithashieldbash,whichgivesyouagoodopeningtolandafewhitsofyourown.

Usuallyitwillbecommonsensewhatyouneedtodotodefeatagivenenemy.Ifaspecialtacticisrequired,Iwillnoteitwhenyoufirstencounterthatfoeinthewalkthrough.Ifyouusecertainitems,theymayaidinyoureffortsaswell,suchasusingtheBeetletochasecertainenemiesaway,ortheSlingshottostunothers.Whenyoudefeatanenemy,itcandroprupees,hearts,andsometimestreasure(moreonthatinalatersection).Iwilldetailthedifferentattackpatternsoftheenemiesyou'llencounterlaterin

================UsingtheShield================

Ofcourseyoucanuseawidevarietyofshieldsinthisgame,eachwithitsownadvantages.Anewfeature,ifyouwill,istheabilityfortheshieldtotakedamage.Thishappenswhenyouraiseyourshieldandanenemystrikesit.Itwillprotectyoufromdamage,buttheshieldwillweakenslightly.Theshieldwillnottakedamageifyousuccessfullyperformashielddashtodeflectaprojectileoradirectphysicalhit.

Thereisameterbelowyourheartswhichdisplaystheequippedshield'sintegrity.Ifitempties,theshieldwillbreakandbecomelost.YoucanrepairaweakenedshieldbybringingittoGondoattheScrapShopinSkyloft.Itisimportanttoupgradeyourshieldswheneverpossible,asthiswillimprovetheshield'soverallstrengthandintegrity.

Inadditiontopayingattentiontoyourshield'sstrength,thematerialstheshieldismadeoutofplaysarole.Forexample,woodenshieldswon'tlastlongwheninafire-basedenvironment.Likewise,aniron/metalshieldwillbeineffectiveagainstelectricalattacks.Thedifferenttypesofshieldswill

bedetailedintheItems/Equipmentsection.

=======Dowsing=======

AnotherkeycomponentofthegameplayhereistheDowsingability.Initially,youwillbeabletosimplylookaroundbypressingCandusingtheWiiRemotetochangeyourview.OnceyoumeetFiandobtaintheGoddessSword,youwillgaintheabilitytoperformDowsing.Basically,youcanselectagiventargetfromthemenu(byholdingC),andapurpleringwillappearonyourscreen.Asyoulookaround,anarrowmayappeartoshowthedirectionyouneedtogo

inordertoreachyourtarget.Thering'sglowandsoundmaybecomemoreintenseifyouareveryclosetoyourtarget.

FimayseemabitpushyaboutusingtheDowsingoption,butitisbynomeansarequirement.Tryitoutifyouwant,butIdon'tpersonallyuseitinthecourseofthewalkthrough.AfteryoureceivetheGoddessWhiteSword,youwillbeabletohaveuptoeightDowsingtargetsatonce,asopposedtotheinitialfourspaces.TogetthoseextraDowsingtargets,youneedtotalktospecificpeople:

Youobviouslywon'tgettoofarinthegameifyouavoidthevarioustypesofobstructionsandannoyinglittlepathwaysthegamehastooffer.Here,Iwillsumupthemostcommononesyouwillface.

Vines-----

Theseleafyplantscanbefoundonwalls,andareusuallyusedtoclimbup/down/acrosstoanotherwiseunreachablelocation.YousimplywalkuptoawallandstartusingtheControlSticktochangeyourdirectionwhileclimbing.Whilehangingfromvines,youcanalsoflicktheWiiRemotewhilemovinginacertaindirectionto"leap".Thisallowsyoutocovermoregroundquickly,atthecostofslightlymorestamina(yes,climbingexpendsstamina).

TheonlyrealthreatyoufacewhilehangingfromvinesaretheWalltulasusuallyfoundhangingonthemaswell(orahornet'snest,likeontheGreatTree).Thus,itpaystolookaheadandshootthemawaywithyourSlingshotbeforeclimbingalong.IfaWalltulagrabsyou,youmustshakeitofftocontinue,butthatcanwastepreciousstaminaifyouarenotcareful.Luckilythelongervine-basedpathstendtohaveStaminaFruithangingalongthem,soyoushouldn'teverrunoutofstaminabyclimbing.

Tightropes----------

Sometimesyouwillfindahorizontalstretchofropeconnectingtwoplatforms,usuallyacrossabottomlesspitorotherarea.Thesearecalledtightropes,andinordertocrossthemyoumustwalkonthemwhilebalancingyourself.Asyoucross,youmayleantotheleftorright.Ifyouleantoofarinadirection,youwillfall;nottoworrythoughsinceyouwillgrabtheropeandbeabletoclimbuptotryagain.Ifyouarehitbyanenemywhileontherope,youwillinstantlyfalloffandcan'tclimbbackon.

ThebestapproachIfoundwhendealingwithtightropes,istoholdtheWii

Remotestraightup,thentiltitslightlyinthedirectionofeachstepyoutake.Forexample,asyoustepwiththeleftfoot,tilttotheleft,thenasyousteptotheright,tilttotheright.Youshouldbeabletogetagoodrhythmgoingaslongasyoucontinuetomoveforward.Youcanalsomovebackwardonatightrope,incaseyouneedtogobackorseeanobstacleahead.

Beforeyoustartwalkingacrossthough,it'sagoodideatocheckforspikyminesplantedontheropeitself.Theywillsticktoyouifyouwalkonthem,buteventhoughyoucanjostlethemoffbyshakingtheWiiRemote,it'ssafertopickthemoffwiththeSlingshotbeforehand.Also,ifanenemyisstandingattheoppositeend,chancesaretheywilltrytowalkontotheropeaswell.Inthosecases,again,dispatchtheenemybeforehandifpossible.

Youcanshootanenemyattheothersidetosometimesgoadthemintocrossingfirst,atwhichpointyoucanhitthemagainwiththeSlingshotoranotheritemtoknockthemoffcompletely.Ifyouareunfortunateenoughtocomefacetofacewithanenemyonthetightrope,trytobackupwhenyouseethemwindinguptoattack.Ifyougotfarenoughback,theywillmissyouandasaresultofthemovement,fallofftheropethemselves.

HangingVines/Ropes-------------------

Insomespots,youwillberequiredtoswingfromarope/vinesuspendedintheairtocrossagaporotherpartofthelandscape.Youcansimplydashandjumptograbontoitintheair,usuallybyjumpingfromanearbyledge.Duetoyourmomentum,youwillautomaticallystartswingingbackandforth.YoucanusetheControlSticktochangethedirectionyouarefacing,orholdBtostopswingingcompletely(forthosemoreprecisemovementsyou'llneedtomake).

Inordertoswing,simplyflicktheWiiRemoteupordowninaswingingmotion(downwardwhenswingingforward,upwardwhenswingingbackward).Atanypoint,preferablytheapexofyourforwardmovement,youcanpressAtojumpfromwhateveryou'reswingingfrom.Thisisessentialtocrossgaps,orevenwhenjumpingtoanotherropeorwallvines/switches.Itmaytakealittlebitofgettingusedto,butitisasimpleconcepttomaster.

Afterwatchingtheintroductoryscene,youwillseeagroupofbirdsknownasLoftwingsflyinghighinthesky.YouwillseeagirlplayingaharpbeforepassingoffanotetoaLoftwing,whichthenfliesaway.Next,youareintroducedtoLink,whoistoldofhisapparentdestinybeforewakingup.

Linkreceivestheletterfromthemysteriousgirl,whoturnsouttobeZelda.TheWingCeremonyistoday,andshewantstoseeyoubeforethen.Afterthat,youwillhavecontrolofLinkforthefirsttime.YoustartoffinyourroomattheKnightAcademy,ontheislandofSkyloft.First,checkthebureaunearbytofindabluerupee,worth5rupees.Then,exityourroomandyouwillbeinthefirstfloorhallway.

RuntothestairsnearbyandPipitwillstopyou.Thereisnothingtodoupstairsfornow,soheaddownthehallintheotherdirection.YouwillfindFledgestrugglinginfrontoftwobarrels.Talktohimtwice,andpickoneofthebarrelsup.Agreetohelphim,andyouwillbeaskedtocarrythebarrelintothekitchen,whichistheadjacentroom.Carrythebarrelaroundthecornerandintothekitchenarea(youwillneedtoputitdownandrest,asyouwillrunoutofstaminaanddropitotherwise).TheStaminaGaugeissomethingyouwillneedtogetusedto,butit'seasyonceyouunderstand.

Anyway,placethebarrelbytheoldwomantocompletethetask,thengobackandtalktoFledgetoreceive20rupees!Withthatdone,gothroughthedoubledoorsnearbytoexittheacademy.

Youarenowoutsideonthemainisland/hubofthegame,knownasSkyloft.Thereisastatueofabirdnearby,soexamineitandsaveyourgame.TheseBirdStatuesarefoundthroughouttheworld,andwillprovetobequiteusefulasthegameprogresses.Thenearbygateislocked,soheadinthe

otherdirectionuntilInstructorHorwellcallstoyoufromabove.HisconversationwillserveasatutorialofsortsforZ-targetingandDashing(holdAtodash,butitdepletesyourstamina).TalktoHorwellbytargetingwithZ,thendash/climbontothestackedboxesandjumpacrossthegaptomeethimfacetoface.

climbbackontothenorthernplatform,andjumpacrosstotheplatforminfrontofit.Looktotheright(west)andblowtheArachasofftheadjacentledge,andcleartherocksonthefollowingplatform.Jumpacrosstothewesternplatform,whereyouwillfindmoreArachasandaladder.Beforeyouclimbit,continuealongandpushtheblockofftheedge(asashortcutforlater).Afterthat,climbtheladderandusetheGustBellowstoblowawaythehugepileofsandinfrontofthedoor,andheadthroughit.

Youarenowbackattheroomyouwereinearlier.Pushtheblockasidetogainaccesstotheladder,thenclimbdowntothebottomlevel.DefeattheThunderKeeseandjumpoverthegap,whereyoucandefeataYellowChuChuaswell.SaveyourgameattheBirdStatueifneeded,thengothroughthedoortothesouthernroomyetagain.Thistime,dropdowntotheareabelowand
