I. Introduction––Zen Alarm Clock Basics

The Zen Alarm Clock is a consciousness-raising tool. No materi-al object can actually raise your consciousness, but you can useinformation and devices such as this clock to stimulate yourgrowth. The Zen Alarm Clock can effect your awareness in avariety of positive ways, all of which require your participation.You can certainly use and enjoy the clock without reading thisbooklet, but to understand its full potential, please look over thepages that follow.

1. Uses and Benefits

How the Zen Alarm Clock WorksThe Zen Alarm Clock works like any standard alarm clock, butwith a unique difference. When the alarm sounds, the clockmakes a single strike of a pure tone chime which resonates forabout 45 seconds. Approximately three and a half minutes afterthe first strike, the clock strikes the chime a second time. Thetime interval between chime strikes then decreases gradually over


a ten minute period until the chime reaches the “terminal cycle” inwhich it sounds every 4.7 seconds continuously until it is turnedoff. The graph on page 31 shows the chime’s progression. Thechime is struck with the same force every time. However, thechime’s gradually increasing frequency assures adequate arousal.

Ways to Use the ClockThe clock can be used simply as a pleasant way to wake up.However, the highly resonant sound of the pure tone acousticchime and its unique computerized progression allow the clock tobe used for dreamwork, personal affirmations, meditation, and forgroup meetings. The chart on the next page shows the variousways the clock can be used and the benefits to be derived fromeach use. The sections that follow describe these uses in greaterdetail.

2. Progressive AwakeningIt would be nice if we could wake up every morning without analarm. We fall asleep gradually, and it seems only natural that agentle awakening is best for our physical and mental well-being.Some people wake up naturally at the same time every morningwithout any outside stimulus. But for most of us, an alarm clock

II. Dreamwork and the Zen Alarm Clock

1. The Power of DreamsDreams have provided a meaningful source of wisdom and guid-ance for people throughout history. Dreams have played animportant role in all major Western and Eastern religions. Thedream state has been cultivated by mystics and shamans through-out the ages, and science has proven a link between dreams andpsychic phenomenon such as telepathy. Many renowned artistsand scientists have successfully used dreams to further theirwork. Although there is much about dreams which is not under-stood, there is general agreement that dreams are required forgood health. It has even been shown that dreams can be used todiagnose oncoming health problems and suggest treatment.Dream deprivation has even been known to produce psychosis.One of the most important benefits of the Zen Alarm Clock isthat it can put you more in touch with your dream life.

Dreams are fragile. One concrete thought, or the movement nec-essary to turn off an alarm or hit a snooze button, can demolish adream memory. When you don’t have the luxury of waking upwhen your body is naturally ready, the Zen Alarm Clock providesa buffer space in which your dream state can be gently concluded.

In one famous dream research experiment, a small stream ofwater was squirted on the bare backs of dreaming subjects. The

Sigmund Freud maintained that dreamswere the “royal road to the unconscious.” Carl Jung analyzedcommon symbols in dreams which he called “archetypes.” Jung’sapproach to psychology relied heavily on dream interpretation.Today “dreamwork,” as it is called, is an important part of manypeoples’ spiritual development. By becoming aware of the con-tent of your dreams, you can establish a relationship with thedeepest reaches of your inner self.

2. Dream PhysiologyDream research has shown that most of our dreams occur duringperiodic rapid eye movement (“REM”) sleep cycles throughoutthe night. Below is a chart showing the average frequency andduration of REM sleep in healthy adults.

Notice that during a typical night’s sleep of 8 hours, the longestREM cycle (lasting between 30 and 50 minutes) occurs in the lasthour. Most of the dreams we remember––the dreams whichaffect our lives and from which we can learn––occur in this lastREM cycle. Thus, if you wake up with the aid of an alarm clock,the alarm will probably sound during your last REM sleep cycle,while you are dreaming.

your dreams and allowing your dreaming mind to “finish thedream;” and secondly, by giving you the time between chimes tolie in bed undisturbed when you are first awakened, so you canrecall your dreams.

Finishing Your DreamsIn the dream/water experiment described in the previous section,some dreaming subjects were awakened by the water right away,while others were not. It may take several chimes of the ZenAlarm Clock to arouse you from a dreaming state, or you may beawakened by the first chime. But even if the first chime doeswake you, it is possible to resume or re-enter a dream from whichyou are marginally awakened if you are allowed to return to thedream without further disturbance. The interval between the firstand second chimes can provide a period of time for you to reach acathartic conclusion to your dream. Preventing the abrupt inter-ruption of your dreams acts to preserve your dream experiences,and maximizes the psychic benefits to be derived from improvedmemory of your dreams.

Remembering Your DreamsThere is general agreement among dream researchers that “natur-al” awakening (as opposed to using a clock radio or buzzer alarm)

One subjectreported that in his dream, he was on a stage in a play and theleading lady had collapsed. In the dream he rushed over to assisther. As he knelt over her, he felt water leaking on his headthrough the roof of the theater. He then pulled the fallen actressover to the side of the stage out of the way of the water drippingfrom the leaky roof. The dream researchers noted that the timerequired to move the actress to the side of the stage in the sub-ject’s dream corresponded to the time between the squirting of thewater on the subject’s back and his awakening.

Thus it has been clinically proven that an outside stimulus whichdoes not immediately awaken the dreamer can signal to thedreaming mind that it is time to gradually conclude the dream.The Zen Alarm Clock’s initial chime can act as just such a signalto your dreaming mind.

3. Dream Incubation & Conservation Using the ClockThe Zen Alarm Clock can help you remember and use yourdreams in two basic ways: First, by not abruptly interrupting

For best results, as you are falling asleep at night, resolve thatyour first thought upon waking will be the recollection of yourdream. Whether or not you are in the middle of a REM cyclewhen the chime wakes you, your best dream memories will beavailable in your first moments of waking consciousness. Beforeopening your eyes or moving, lie quietly and try to rememberyour dream. Recall the sequence of events and the most vividimages. When you have a conscious memory of your dream, youare ready to open your eyes and get up. Keeping a notebook byyour bed to write down your dream memories can also be helpful.Discovering the value of your dream life can be richly rewarding.

Studies have shown that by using affirmations and “alphawave programming techniques,” limiting beliefs can be exchangedfor “liberating beliefs” which can make amazing differences inyour performance. Going beyond mere “positive thinking,” alphawave techniques provide a bridge between your conscious andpreconscious mind.

2. Brain Wave Physiology & Alpha WavesSince the invention of the electroencephalogram (EEG) in the1930’s, scientists have been able to measure the electrical activityof the brain. In the active waking state, brain waves vibratebetween 14 and 20 cycles per second. Active waking brain wavesare called beta waves. During sleep, brain waves vibrate between2 and 8 cycles per second. Intervening between waking brainwave activity and sleeping brain waves, is a rhythmic form ofbrain activity known as alpha waves. Alpha rhythms (8 to 13cycles per second) appear when your eyes are closed and yourmind is in a quiet state of relaxation.

Your brain has two sides––a right and left hemisphere. The leftside of your brain is associated with logic and reason, while theright is involved with creativity and intuition. When your brain is

In between the sleeping state and the waking state is a state ofdeep relaxation in which your subconscious or “preconscious”mind can be positively influenced. Making life-changing impres-sions on your preconscious mind can be accomplished by making“affirmations,” or positive statements to yourself. The process ofimproving your life through affirmations and the role played bythe Zen Alarm Clock are discussed in this section.

1. Programming Your Preconscious Mind for a Better LifeConscious and unconscious beliefs about yourself and your poten-tial have a powerful effect on your life. Limiting beliefs you haveacquired in your life can hold you back in subtle but damagingways. Freeing yourself from your limiting beliefs and replacingthem with beliefs that expand your potential is a focus of cuttingedge psychology. Researchers have found that your beliefs aboutyourself lodge in your preconscious mind. These beliefs cannotbe changed by will power alone; they must be replaced by new

3. Creating Your Own Affirmations & Using the ClockAn affirmation is a specialized technique of stating a goal to your-self in a way that re-programs your preconscious mind forimproved performance. Affirmations are most effective whenthey are expressed as statements of fact or convictions writtendown in your own language. Your affirmations should be person-al, positive and in the present tense. If your goal is to become abetter parent, for example, effective affirmations may include: “Iam balanced in my expressions of discipline and understandingtoward my children.” or “When I demonstrate love and compas-sion to my kids, they learn to show love and warmth to eachother.”

Formulate and write down an affirmation that will improve yourlife. Before you go to bed, read the affirmation to yourself andresolve to remember it when you first wake up. When you areawakened by the Zen Alarm Clock’s chime, lie quietly in bedbefore moving or opening your eyes and repeat your affirmationto yourself three times. The chances are good that your brain willbe in a deep alpha state during the first few chimes of the clock.If you do nothing to disturb this “freshly awakened” state, youraffirmations will be most effective and you should achieve your

Although alpha brain waves occur naturally as you are fallingasleep or day dreaming, alpha wave activity is at its height whenyou first wake up. Concrete thoughts, physical activity, or lighton the retina of the eye can send the brain out of alpha and intobeta wave activity. Thus the ideal time for programming the pre-conscious mind through suggestions in the alpha state is immedi-ately upon awakening. Through the use of affirmations in thealpha state, the mind’s natural impressioning power can help youstick to your diet, improve your self image, or make you moremotivated. Repeating commands to the preconscious mind pre-pares you for success. Repetition is key and the effects of alphawave state affirmations are cumulative.

desired results. Like dreamwork, improving your life throughalpha wave techniques can be accomplished without the use ofthe Zen Alarm Clock. But using the clock makes the process eas-ier and more fun.

IV. Meditation and the Zen Alarm Clock

Beyond the psychological inquiry into dreams or the self-improvement techniques of affirmations lies the ancient andsacred practice of meditation. Some form of meditation is prac-ticed in every major world religion. Yogis, Christian mystics, ZenBuddhists, Quakers, practitioners of the Kabbala, and SecularHumanists, all experience the benefits of meditation. The ZenAlarm Clock is an “accoutrement to meditation.” It can be usedin a variety of ways to aid your practice and encourage you to“make time” to meditate.

1. The Meditative StateAlthough there are many forms and theories of meditation, twobasic approaches emerge. These two basic types of meditationcan be characterized as “meditation with form” and “meditationwithout form.” In meditation with form, the practitioner focuseson contacting his or her Higher Self, or communing with

matter how you use it, the sonic clarity of the chime provides anappropriate conclusion to your stillness.

3. Meditating on the ChimeThe Zen Alarm Clock can also be more actively incorporated intoyour meditation practice as a form of “mantra” or “yantra.”Mantra is a sanskrit word which means “mental protection.” InEastern meditation traditions, a mantra takes the form of a wordor sound which is chanted to occupy the mind and keep disturb-ing thoughts from distracting the meditator. A yantra is used inEastern meditation traditions as an image upon which the medita-tor concentrates until it “disappears.” The chime can be used as asort of external mantra or sonic yantra. The chime functions as amantra as its sound repeats, bringing the meditator back to thefocal point of concentration. The chime functions as a yantra asthe meditator listens to the resonant sine wave gradually dissi-pate.

Bells and chimes are used in both Eastern and Western medita-tion traditions. In the Christian monastic tradition, the ringing ofthe bell during meditation reminds the practitioners to return tothe object of worship. Zen monks have used the gong to begin


Divinity. Meditation with form can also involve creative imageryand visualization. Meditation without form concerns goingbeyond thought into emptiness––transcending the ego-self. Butno matter which type of meditation you choose to practice, medi-tation is more than simply entering into a dream-like or alphastate. In the practice of meditation you will inevitably progressthrough a series of developmental stages as you become moreadept at journeying deeper within yourself.

2. Using the Chime to End Your MeditationThe first and most basic use of the Zen Alarm Clock in your med-itation practice is as a signal of the end of your allotted meditationtime. If you want to meditate for 20 minutes, simply set the alarm20 minutes into the future and begin your meditation. When thefirst chime strikes you can choose to end there or continue yourmeditation for about three and a half minutes until the nextchime, or even longer. Many meditators find that a “three and ahalf minute warning” is a perfect interval in which to graduallyconclude their longer meditations. The first chime signals thefinal phase of the meditation and the second chime its conclusion.The beauty of the chime is that it compliments rather than dis-turbs the meditative state while acting as an effective timer. their meditations and during meditation to bring them out of theirmental processes back to the stillpoint of emptiness.

The 10 minute cycle of the chime’s progression can thus be usedas a guided meditation wherein the chime acts as a focal point ofconcentration. The progression of the chime can carry the medi-tator on a journey of self-discovery. As the frequency of thechime’s sounding increases over the 10 minute cycle, the medita-tor is invited into deeper states of stillness.

To begin a 10 minute cycle of meditation using the chime, turn theswitch to the “On” position and move the alarm hand in line withthe hour hand until you hear a faint click. In a few seconds, thefirst strike of the chime will signal the beginning of your medita-tion. For a softer chime, simply place the clock some distancefrom you.

next. Business meetings, counseling sessions, and even sociallunches have a way of running on. It is often difficult to play therole of “meeting police,” interrupting someone in mid-thought.The buzzing of an ordinary alarm clock or watch is also an inap-propriately abrupt end. If you shut off the alarm, the meetingcontinues; if you let the alarm ring, the meeting does not have achance to conclude gracefully.

The Zen Alarm Clock’s progressive chime provides a gentle signalthat only a few minutes remain and that it is time to conclude.Those who are oblivious to the time, however, will not be able toignore the gradually increasing frequency of the chime. Fewmeetings can continue in the face of a chime every 4.7 seconds!The next section suggests some specific applications for this tech-nique of social engineering.

2. Progressive Chime ApplicationsWhen the clock will be used as a signal for a meeting’s end, it is agood idea to begin the meeting by telling the participants aboutthe clock and how it works. Agreements about a meeting’s con-clusion are best made at the beginning. The alarm can be set tobegin 5 minutes before the scheduled end so that the first warning

In addition to the personal and contemplative uses describedabove, the Zen Alarm Clock can be used as a progressively per-sistent, yet gentle way to bring people together and to dispersethem when their time together is over.

1. Being Here Now & Being On TimeTo be fully present with another person, you cannot be thinkingabout where you have to be next. Checking your watch during aconversation or discussion can appear rude and impatient.However, if you have made an agreement to be at a certain placeat a certain time, breaking that agreement is also “bad form.” Inour modern society, considerate people are often faced with thedilemma of being “fully with” the person who is in their presenceand also being on time for the person they have agreed to see

VI. The Zen Alarm Clock’s Design Principles

The Zen Alarm Clock has been designed according to principlesof universe harmony. Some of the esoteric design principles shallremain the secret of the Clock’s creator. Others are discussedbelow.

1. The Chime’s Pythagorean TuningThe Zen Alarm Clock’s chime sounds an “E” note which has beentuned according to the method developed by the ancient Greekmaster Pythagoras. The Clock’s E note, however, vibrates at adifferent frequency than its equivalent note on a modern piano.Modern tuning methods facilitate musical composition, but theycompromise the enchanting and therapeutic quality—the puri-ty—of the naturally occurring tones discovered by Pythagoras.As a result of its “natural” tuning, the Zen Alarm Clock’s tonereflects the vibrations of nature—the motion of the planets andthe frequencies of life. Studies indicate that certain sounds canactually stimulate our nervous systems and charge our brains.

The Zen Alarm Clock’s progressive chime is also useful to callmeetings to order. When a meeting involves many people, gettingstarted on time is often a problem. People need time to concludetheir preliminary greetings and conversations and take their seats.A gradually increasing 10 minute “call to order” is a perfect wayto begin meetings on time without making anyone the “bad guy”who must admonish people to pay attention. For use in calling agroup to order, the clock is most effective when attendees haveadvance notice of the purpose of the chiming clock. Whether youare calling your family to the dinner table or beginning a churchservice, the Zen Alarm Clock provides a lovely way to begin andto end.

Gregorian chants, for example, have been shown to energize thebrains of both the chanting monks as well as those who listen tothe chants. Because of its Pythagorean tuning, the Zen AlarmClock’s chime may produce a subtle charging effect on your mind.

2. The Chime’s Golden Mean ProgressionThe Zen Alarm Clock’s progressive chiming takes place overabout 10 minutes. This progression is measured from the firststrike of the chime until the clock reaches its final cycle of contin-uous chiming, about every 5 seconds. The sequence of chimestrikes within this 10 minute cycle is designed to approximate the“Golden Mean.” The Golden Mean, also known as the “DivineProportion,” is a special relationship between any given wholeand a specific part thereof. Nature uses the Golden Mean as itsformula for creation.

The simplest expression of the Golden Mean is in the division of aline: A line with a given length is divided into a small part and alarge part. The relationship of the small segment of the line to thelarge segment of the line is in the same proportion as the relation-ship of the large segment to the line as a whole.


The Golden Mean has been used since ancient times by artists,architects and designers to express harmony and balance. Thebeauty of the Golden Mean is that all three parts––the small part,the large part, and the whole––are in perfect proportion with eachother. Nature uses this divine proportion to grow from withinitself. Golden Mean relationships are everywhere innature––from the human body to the solar system. The progres-sive sequence of the Zen Alarm Clock’s chime expresses theGolden Mean by dividing the 10 minute time “line” into smallerand smaller Golden Mean ratios. Adjust the Chime for the Best SoundYour Zen Alarm Clock is like an acoustic musical instrument.You may have to adjust its sound to your taste. Adjust the chimeby firmly scooting the chime bar up or down on the string. Theidea is to move the chime directly in front of the striker tip. Tocheck the position of the striker and the chime, pick up the clockand hold it face down, then look at the chime from the side in pro-file so you can see the striker sticking out. Then move the chimeinto position by firmly pulling it up or down on the string (asshown in diagram) so that the striker hits the chime squarely—shown in profile like this: -O.

Operating Instructions

1. Install 4 new “C” size alkaline batteries (any brand will work). However, please do not use “titanium” or “heavy duty” batteries, we recommend Duracell brand batteries.

2. Turn the On/Off switch on the back to the Off position.3. Set the time and move the alarm hand counterclockwise

until it clicks upon reaching the hour hand.4. Slide the On/Off switch to the On position and listen to

the first strike of the chime. The next strike will occur in 3-1/2 minutes as shown in the graph on page 32.

You may hear the first chime strike again by turning the On/Offswitch to the Off position for 2 seconds then back to “On.” Thefirst chime may appear soft but as the chimes increase in frequen-cy over the next 10 minutes you will find yourself graduallyawakened.


After testing the chime strike you may want to adjust the chimebar for the best sound by moving one end of the chime bar up ordown, and then then other end until the chime bar is directly infront of the striker tip.

Using the AlarmTo set the alarm, move the knob on the right while looking at thesmall alarm hand. Notice the small tick marks at the edge of theclock dial. These marks help you set the alarm to the desiredtime. (The lack of numbers on some dials is for aesthetic rea-sons.) Once the alarm hand is pointing to the desired alarm time,turn the switch on the right side of the back of the clock up intothe “On” position. Your alarm is now set.
