RESEARCH

09/2018 –present Natural minerals as a protection barriers for microorganisms in self-healing mortars, TUBITAK-1001 Project, Özyeğin University Istanbul, Turkey, Primary Supervisor *The proposed project is an extensive study undertaken to design a two-phase system to induce self-healing via biomineralization in cement-based materials. *Within the scope of proposed project, the impact of self-healing on corrosion resistance and plastic shrinkage cracks will also be evaluated. 06/2018 –present Adaptive manufacturing of cement-based materials, Özyeğin University Istanbul, Turkey, (Collaborator-Mehmet Ali Gülgün, Sabancı University) * This project aims to develop a cement-based mortar /concrete for 3-D manufacturing of structural elements * The study focuses on development of adaptable 3-D printer, microwave curing, evaluation of fresh and hardened performance of cement-based materials, improving rheology of mortar by sustainable approaches 03/2016 –09/2018 Bio-based admixtures to modify rheology of cement-based materials, TUBITAK-1005 Project, Ozyegin University Istanbul, Turkey, Primary Supervisor * The project goal is the creation of bio-based superplasticizers and viscosity modifying agents for cement-based materials * To optimize the cost of admixture by using waste or environmental additives

* Two graduate and undergraduate research assistants are working on the project.

10/2015 –present Use of biomineralization in recycled aggregate concrete, Ozyegin University Istanbul, Turkey (Collaborator- Nilüfer Ozyurt Zihnioglu, Boğaziçi University) * This collaborative research aims to improve the mechanical properties of recycled aggregate concrete by using MICCP. * Calcium carbonates are induced via ureolytic Sporosarcina pasteurii and deposited within the cracks and inclusions on recycled aggregates. 06/2015 –09/2015 Bacterial self-healing concrete, Magnel Laboratory and LabMET Ghent University, Ghent Belgium, Visiting Researcher (Collaborator: Nele De Belie and Nico Boon) * Worked on bacterial self-healing concrete within the scope of EU FP7-SHeMat project

* Evaluated influence of air entraining admixtures on viability of vegetative cells incorporated in mortar * Investigate the influence of vegetative cells, nutrients, and AEA on hydration kinetics on different cement types 10/2014 –04/2017 Biomineralization for self-healing cement-based materials, TUBITAK-3501 Project, Ozyegin University Istanbul, Turkey, Primary Supervisor * The project goal was development innovative self-healing cement-based material via use of biomineralization * Microorganisms were cultured in a corn-steep liquor/urea medium and directly incorporated in mortar without any protection * Self-healing of flexural cracks was obtained at 7-day old mortar samples * Water absorption was decreased through crack healing * Durability of bio-based sealant was related to morphology of calcium carbonate within the cracks * Use of chemical admixtures did not affect the self-healing ability

* One graduate research assistant and two undergraduate research assistants worked on the project. 09/2009 – 08/2013 Biomineralization in cement-based materials: Inoculation of vegetative cells, The University of Texas at Austin, Austin, USA, Graduate Research Assistant * Developed a self-healing mortar for micro-cracks at early ages. * Developed a bio-smart material in order to increase the service life of cement-based structures. * Evaluated microstructure, hydration kinetics, compressive strength, porosity, and electrical resistivity of cement-based materials. * Evaluated the metabolic activity of microorganisms in cement-based materials.
