What does “Zhaga” mean?
•4
The word ‘Zhaga’ has no intended meaning. It is a waterfall in Sichuan.
The brand ‘Zhaga’ stands for interchangeable LED light sources.
Interchangeable light sources
• The lighting industry is used to work with standardized light sources
– E27, G5, G9, …
•17/04/12•5
LED light sources are not interchangeable today
• Most LED light sources are not interchangeable, until now
• Typical differences are:
– fit with heat sink (2, 3, or 4 screws)
– size of the heat sink
– size of the light emitting surface
– height of the light emitting surface
• Problem:
– Change LED => Change heat sink & reflector in luminaire
•17/04/12•6
Zhaga: interchangeable LED light sources
• Zhaga makes LED light sources interchangeable
• The main parameters are:
– Mechanical and thermal fit with the heat sink
– Size of the light emitting surface
– Height of the light emitting surface
– Photometric properties of the light emitting surface

What is an LED light engine?
• An LED light engine is the combination of an LED module and its associated electronic control gear (‘driver’).
•817/04/12
Control gear integrated or in separate housing
• An LED light engine can have integrated control gear, or control gear in a separate housing

The interfaces of a light engine
1. Mechanical Interfacerelated to dimensions incl. “socket”
2. Photometrical Interface related for example to lumen output, color, light distribution
3. Thermal Interfacerelated for example to thermal resistance, heat dissipation
4. Electrical Interface
related to Power (AC or DC), insulation, earth
and Controls (by reference to existing specifications)

What are interface specifications?
Zhaga specifies the outside properties of the light source:
− mechanical fixation
− thermal behavior
− electrical properties
− photometric properties
The inside is not specified.
Manufacturers can make their own internal engine design.
Innovation continues inside this 'Black Box’.

Not performance or quality – only interchangeability
• Zhaga specifies the minimum needed to achieve interchangeability
• Zhaga does not specify quality and performance aspects, such as:
– life time,
– color stability,
– energy efficiency, or
– safety
• Zhaga enables product differentiation and application-specific trade-off between cost and performance•17/04/12

Benefits of Zhaga:
• Companies at every functional tier of the industry participate
• The best Solid State Lighting expertise in the world is gathered in one place
• Open communication – no proprietary systems
• Equality of influence – 1 vote for each participating company
• One common goal for all –
- interchangeability!
17/04/12•14
The fact that products are made to be interchangeable does not mean that everyone will
build the same thing.

More than 30 companies show Zhaga-compliant products
• Zhaga-compliant light sources are interchangeable
– Why is interchangeability important for the lighting industry?
• Zhaga created specifications for 6 different LED light sources
– What are these 6 Zhaga specifications?
• More than 30 companies show Zhaga-compliant products
– Where can you see these Zhaga-compliant products?
