MISSION FROM GADD EUROPE 2010

Zildjian and Steve Gadd concluded their hugely successful “Mission From Gadd Europe” tours in April and September, 2010, playing to packed houses across Europe.

“Mission From Gadd Europe” was originally scheduled for April 2010 and included 11 dates in eight countries. Due to the volcanic ash over Europe which grounded US flights to Europe, we were forced to postpone the first four dates in London, Dublin, Edinburgh, and Paris. It looked as though the entire tour would have to be scrubbed. Howev-er, through the perseverance on Steve and Zildjian, the tour began on April 22nd and resumed for the remaining seven shows in Tilburg, Hamburg, and Karlsruhe, Germany; Mon-tebelluna and Firenze, Italy; and Barcelona and wrapping up in Sevilla, Spain on April 30th, 2010.

Almost immediately after unpacking our suitcases from “Mis-sion From Gadd Europe”, we began planning “Mission From Gadd Europe – The Sequel” which we thought would be a quick, one week trip to the UK and Paris in September to make up the four dates we had to postpone. Before we knew it, we had another 11 city tour booked, including a special appearance at the London Drum Show. Apparently, Europe can’t get enough of Steve Gadd!

The first “Mission From Gadd” tour in 2005 marked Steve Gadd’s return after a 20-year absence from the clinic scene and incorporated a completely new and revolutionary format. Subsequent tours in the US and Canada in 2005 and 2006 were the biggest events ever to be presented in their markets. The two “Mission From Gadd Europe” tours featured many of the same elements as the previous “Mis-sion From Gadd” tours, including a self-contained tour bus, a sales event where consumers had access to specially selected cymbals from the Zildjian Vault, commemorative “Mission From Gadd Europe” t-shirts, a meet-and-greet with

On June 29th, 2010, one week before his 70th birthday, Ringo Starr and his All Star Band (including Zildjian artist Gregg Bissonette), performed in Boston. John DeChristo-pher, Zildjian’s Vice President, Artist Relations & Event Mar-keting Worldwide and longtime friend of Ringo, was there to present the drumming icon with a birthday gift on behalf of the Zildjian Company - a pair of Tiffany silver cufflinks.

ZILDJIAN CLINICSTEMPESTA AND PRIDGEN

Throughout the year, Zildjian artists were all over the world entertaining, gigging, and educating. John Tempesta and Thomas Pridgen hit the road hard, bringing their clinics to Asia, Europe, and the States.

John Tempesta, drummer for The Cult, hit a stride during his clinic tours of Europe and Asia. On both tours, he was rocking out with a full set of Zildjian Z3s. John, who has worked with great rock bands such as White Zombie, Testament, and Helmet, thrilled the crowds in Holland, Belgium, Italy, Japan, China, and more. It was a great chance for the drumming communities to learn about his techniques, practice programs, and double bass drum skills as well as gain an insight into working in the rock environment professionally.

For the first time, Thomas Pridgen took to the road on his own Clinic Tour through the States. He wowed the crowds from the East Coast to the West, not only with his playing, but with his insight and advice. When asked about his setup, he explained that he uses such big drums and cymbals (including 18” HiHats!) because it’s more of a challenge to play fast around a big kit and some of the people he has played with play so loud that he has to match their volume. It truly was a sight to see.

Check Zildjian.com for full Clinic Tour Blogs for this and all of our Clinic Tours.

UK ARtISt SESSIONHARD ROCK LONDONThe Avedis Zildjian Company hosted its 7th UK Artist Session at the renowned London Hard Rock Café on 29 March 2010 attracting its biggest attendance of Artists to date.

Zildjian and the Hard Rock Café rolled out the red carpet to welcome Zildjian artists to an afternoon of rock n roll hospitality, they were given the opportunity to see and play all of the latest offerings from Zildjian, including some excit-ing prototype cymbals...with creator Gavin Harrison on hand to explain his reasoning behind them.

Steve where his fans could take photos and get the drum-ming icon’s autograph. Each day culminated with a clinic performance by the one and only Steve Gadd.

Acoording to John DeChristopher, Zildjian’s Vice President, Artist Relations & Event Marketing Worldwide and “Mission From Gadd” Tour Manager, “This was our fifth clinic tour together and working with Steve gets better every time. He really knows how to connect with an audience. The reac-tion of his fans is like nothing else you’ll ever see.”

19”and 21” Z3 Ultra Hammered ChinasZildjian adds two new china models to the loud and penetrating Z3 line. Two new bone

crushing Z3 Ultra Hammered Chinas in 19” and 21” are made to explode like none other.

Both the 19” and 21” sizes have a new inverted ‘volcano’ bell which combined with the

extensive amount of large hammer marks provide a sound that is trashier than their 18” and

20” Z3 China counterparts. All Z3 Chinas have plenty of power and projection to aug-

ment any hard hitter’s set-up. They are medium in weight and have a polished finished,

like all Z3 cymbals.

22” A Zildjian Swish Knocker Zildjian introduces a newly designed 22” A Zildjian Swish Knocker which adds a

smoother and sweeter “knock” to the sound. While we’re calling the design new, it

was actually developed specifically from the famed model that Mel Lewis used when

he played with his orchestra at the Village Vanguard. This new model features a

slightly higher profile and a cup that is not as curved as the model it is replacing.

It still features 22 rivets and comes in the legendary A Zildjian traditional finish.

Zildjian takes extreme pride in every hand-crafted instrument that comes out of our factory. The age-old debate on

what our Greatest Cymbal of All Time can’t be answered by us alone. That’s why we enlisted you, our loyal Z-Club

fans, to pick the Greatest Zildjian Cymbal of all time. Your answers came flooding in with comments about cherished

memories with your cymbals and we thank you! With close to 5,000 responses, here are the results.

Great stick definition and control have made the A Zildjian Ping Rides one of the most popular ride models in the Zildjian catalog. A versatile ride model that works with all musical styles.

Answering the demand to add cymbals that were more aggressive but still had that special A Custom sound. Zildjian answered that call with the A Custom Projection models in 1996.

418” K Custom

Dark Crash The K Custom Dark Crash utilized a

special over-hammering technique that

allowed for a quick and bright attack with

an extra fast decay. This allowed for a

heavier crash to have a similar response

to a thinner and lighter cymbal but with a

lot more volume potential. They were first introduced in 1995.

The American made K line of cymbals were

multiple musical genres..

316” A Custom CrashIn the early ‘90s iconic recording artist

Vinnie Colaiuta requested a special

smooth sounding crash cymbal that

would be specific for studio use. The

result was the creation of an entire line

of cymbals that were not only perfect

for the studio but could also be applied

to any drumming style.

pete Cater“There’s so much more to Buddy Rich than merely amazing chops. I love the spontaneity and creativity in his soloing and don’t forget that amazing groove that goes beyond swinging. Buddy’s time feel struts, it swaggers, it lays down the law of rhythm. Buddy was a rare communicator in music; he was a virtuoso whose musicianship could be understood by everybody, you don’t need expert knowledge to watch Buddy play and to understand that you are witnessing greatness”.

peter Erskine“You know: Buddy played the best time.Buddy is the best drummer of all time.Buddy Rich was timeLESS, too.

A message of contradictions yet all of them in agreement. Buddy was a contradiction. He could be the sternest of musical fathers but he cared about his musicians deeply. He sounded like a wiseguy to some people sometimes and yet he always treated Music with the highest respect. I never heard Buddy give less than 100% of his time, energy and talent to music. The older I get, the more I “get” Buddy, the more I understand him. Yet I’ll never understand how he did what he did.Buddy Rich was a genius, period. And was ... and will always remain ...the greatest drummer to have walked this earth.”

Gregg Field“They make musicians like Buddy Rich three times in a century... I have yet to meet the other two.”

Steve Gadd“The one and only.”

tommy Igoe“While on a flight recently, a track popped on my iPod that was swinging so mercilessly hard that it felt like the phones would be ripped right from my head. Buddy, obviously. He played a 4-bar break of sheer genius that can only be described as physically impossible and flawlessly performed. I started to cackle in amazement—loudly. I just couldn’t stop replaying that break over and over again, hundreds of times. With each listen, I just shook my head, not just at the sheer virtuosity, but the utter lack of fear. You could feel his legendary confidence in every stroke. But, trying to explain musical perfection with words is futile. So, here you go: The album is, “Swingin’ New Big Band”, and the tune is “Naptown Blues”, and the four-bar break occurs at exactly 2:48. If you find yourself giggling in awe, I know how you feel.”

Danny Seraphine”To this day, a week never goes by without me listening to Buddy. He set the bar so high for all of us that I’m still reaching to this day. Don’t know if I’ll ever truly get there, but man, it keeps me moving forward and striving. Also Buddy’s comments about my playing will remain a high on my list of greatest honors I’ve received. Buddy was a one of a kind, as there will NEVER be another like him, a true warrior that I will always try to emulate.”

Steve Smith“There are a small number of naturally gifted individuals who have developed their talents to the point of perfection, blending and balancing technical excellence and artistic expression. These are the individuals that we want to study and model ourselves after as we deepen into a chosen mode of artistry. With this in mind: playwrights study Shakespeare, composers study Mozart, painters study Picasso, martial artists study Bruce Lee and drummers study Buddy Rich”

Freddie Gruber“One of a kind”…

Alex Acuña“Tony Williams is still the biggest influence on my playing today.Coincidence? We were born the same day, 12/12”

Gregg Bissonette“Tony Williams was not only one of my drum heroes, he was also a friend and teacher to me. I had the great honor of studying with him at his home in Pacifica, CA over the last few years before he so suddenly passed away. Tony and his wonderful wife Colleen were really great to hang out with and we shared lots of great stories and laughter! Tony taught me SO much about not just drumming, but about music and passion!! He was all about the passion of music!! We all miss you Tony!!”

Dennis Chambers“Tony was the father of drumming of our time. If it wasn’t for him, I wouldn’t be who I am, or drumming wouldn’t be what it is today.”

Vinnie Colaiuta“Tony Williams is the genius of the drums. He’s my hero.”

Vince Wilburn“Outside of my Uncle Miles, Anthony Tillman Williams is the reason why I play the drums. Growing up, watching Tony play the drums with the Miles Davis Quintet when they would come through my hometown of Chicago, will forever be etched into my soul. He was like an uncle to me.”

Charlie Watts“Tony Williams was one of the pivotal drummers in the jazz genre. I thought at the end of his short life he was composing some very interesting music. And to me, personally, he was always a very kind and lovely person. He was inspirational.”

Roy Haynes“I met Tony in the early 1960s – I think he was 16 or 17 years old and everyone was talking about this young kid who sounded like me. He used to sit in at “Connolly’s” in Roxbury, Mass. As a young man, he had two wishes: the first was to visit the old Zildjian Factory in Quincy, Massachusetts and the second was to come to New York and go clothes shopping with me. I

remember one time when he sat in, he played a roll that was so beautiful and so even and I knew he had a lot say… and man, he said it!”

John DeChristopher“I was fortunate to know Tony on a personal level. In the eight years from when I joined Zildjian in 1989, until his untimelypassing in 1997, we developed a great friendship. Tony was instrumental in putting Zildjian Drumsticks on the map; his drumstick was Zildjian’s first Artist Series (signature) drumstick. I remember having Tony at our booth at the 1991 Winter NAMM show when we introduced his drumstick and our artists lining up to have their picture taken with him! In October of 1996, just a few months before he passed away, we traveled the US on his first (and only) clinic tour. Tony is, and will forever be, one of the most important drummers in the history of the instrument…”
