Courthouse Redesign

As a group, our task was to re-design the existing courthouse locatedin Bessemer, Alabama. The objective was to design a building that addresses the site and re�ected the inherent civic qualities. These qualities were to allow the public to identify it as a courthouse. Also a goal was to provide a space for the courthouse within the city. This was done by a number of ways, one of which was to provide a set back with a large open space that would frame the courthouse and provide the people of Bessmer with a transitional space into the building.

Along with the purpose of giving the people of Bessemer an iconic Civicbulding, my team manipulted the site to aslo provide them with an open green area that will be a place for people to gather. This area frames the courthouse and allows for a uniqueexperience when approaching thestrong and stable structure.

With no civic presence or reference to Bessemer, the orignal courhouse gets lost in the city.

The strong tower at the corner ofthe courthouse is utilized both asan achor to the building and as alandmark for the city of Bessemer.

The vision for the Famagusta Book Store/Library stemmedfrom a desire to attract both locals and tourists. The existing building provided the ideal location for a uni�ed space with di�erent functions.

To attract pedestrians, I adapted the entrance to �t the proposed site plan for town's urban layout. The new main entrance would now be accessible from any of the main streets by an additional path.

When arriving at the building, there are two enteries, oneserving the library and one serving the bookstore. Above eachspace there is a mezzanine level. For the library, this level holdsadditional bookcases and a large bench over looking the ground below. For the bookstore, this level contains smaller benches andis used as a space for book readings.

In order to keep these separate spaces uni�ed, I used a system of glass in sky lights, windows and glass panels incorporated in the mezzanine �oors. This incorporation of glass extends through eachplane and visually wraps the entire structure. My ultimate and key goal is to provide Famagusta with a gathering space for any and all visitors to the area.

Traditional TurkishHouse redesignIstanbul, TurkeyIn order to unify the modern Turkish family, I connected the Sofa, the main living space in a traditional Turkish home, and the kitchen through the use of a central �replace. The �replace can be utilized for cooking and gathering around, which unites the family in a comfortable way.

The design for the interior space, �oor plan and the furniture, stemmed from the traditional Turkish ceiling panel. Using the intriquite design of the panel, I translated the proportions into a new �oorplan for the Sofa of the home. It is then incorperated into the elevations of the public room and furniture within the space.

The adaptability of the table design allows the family to utilize it in which ever way the family sees �t. The table translation of the ceiling panelskeeps in context of the history and development of the Turkishhome.

Hand RenderingsIstanbul, TurkeyThis series of watercolor renderings representsa study of architectural surroundings. Throughthese renderings, I explored spacial voids and the interactions between structures in an urbanenviornment.

Along with spatial study, the use of light and the manner in which light renders buildings is studied. Explorations of travels and newspaces are shown in the manner in which they are viewed. I learned the extent to whichenviornmental surroundings along with thestructures impact a way of life.

Personal ArtExplorations of various media include, graphite on paper, oil pastell on cardboardand other variations. These works explore and capture movement and emotion through gestural drawings.
