SPRING/SUMMER 2015 © Zoë’s Place Baby Hospice Liverpool newsletter Tel: 0151 228 0353 Dear Friends Welcome to our Spring/Summer edition of the Smile newsletter. We would like to offer huge congratulations to our Chair of the Board of Trustees and founder of Zoë’s Place Baby Hospice, Professor Jack Scarisbrick who received an MBE in the New Year’s Honours list. Professor John Joseph Scarisbrick established our hospice back in 1995 after recognising that a large number of families with children suffering from life-limiting or life-threatening conditions were desperately in need of specialist facilities. Even more crucially, Prof Scarisbrick recognised that families most needed this facility during the early years of their child’s life. This year we also celebrate the 20th Anniversary of when Zoë’s Place Baby Hospice Liverpool was opened. During that time we have supported over 350 families. An even more remarkable achievement when you think that the majority of the income we need for our running costs (approximately 95%) has come from amazing supporters like you! If you would like to mark this amazing milestone and help make our ‘bear’thday extra special you can send Zoë bear a gift of £2, which will help support our care here at the hospice. Please text ZOES20 £2 to 70070. We sincerely hope you will continue supporting our Hospice so that we can continue to provide support to even more families for another 20 years. Thank you. Dear FriendsWelcome to our Spring/Summer edition of the Smile newsletter.

We would like to offer huge congratulations to our Chair of the Board of Trustees and founder of Zoë’s Place Baby Hospice, Professor Jack Scarisbrick who received an MBE in the New Year’s Honours list. Professor John Joseph Scarisbrick established our hospice back in 1995 after recognising that a large number of families

with children suffering from life-limiting or life-threatening conditions were desperately in need of specialist facilities.

Thank you.

Prof. Jack Scarisbrick MBE

Hi, my name is Kirsty and I am mummy to Carson who is 4 years old. Carson was born 3 months premature and immediately had to be resuscitated 4 times. As a result, Carson suffers with many complex medical conditions including: tetralogy of fallots (a congenital heart defect), Spina Bifida occulta (a group of conditions affecting the spinal column), floppy airways which resulted in a permanent tracheostomy and portable ventilator, a bleed on the brain, a cleft palate and chronic lung disease. He has had a 3 and a half years stay at Alder Hey and has had 40+ operations. His most recent diagnosis is mitochondrial disease which affects cell function and is a terminal condition.

When we first heard about Zoë’s Place we were strongly against sending Carson there because we

didn’t want to think that Carson would be receiving ‘end of life care’. What we realised very quickly about Zoë’s Place is that they are all about ensuring the highest possible quality of life for the children that they care for. Zoë’s Place is our ‘home from home’ and the care that the nurses provide has been a complete life-line to us and it is so reassuring having somewhere where we know he is looked after properly. It gives us a chance to spend time with our other children and catch up on the everyday tasks knowing that he is having a fantastic time with the nurses at the hospice. Thank you Zoë’s Place.

hospice newsQueenies ChristmasWe have enjoyed a busy few months in the hospice. Our children’s Christmas party which was hosted by Queenies Christmas and the fabulous Herbert Howe was a great success. The children and families enjoyed the entertainment and a visit from Father Christmas himself! The Christmas party would not be a success without the ongoing support from Queenies Christmas. Thank you.

We have recently had visits from the Everton under 21’s and Everton Legend’s Graeme Sharp, Ian Snodin and Graham Stuart. They very kindly donated a cheque for £1,000.00 and also brought some Everton FC

goodies for the children.

Zoë’s Place Liverpool is celebrating its 20th Anniversary in 2015 and for the past 2 decades the hospice has had the privilege of providing vital help and support to over 350 families. We have undergone some major changes in both our service and our hospice over the past few years and constantly strive to adapt and improve our service to continue to ensure that it meets the needs of the children we support. As part of the 20th Anniversary celebrations Radio Merseyside and DJ Tony Snell recently broadcast their breakfast show from Zoë’s Place and we and our children had a fantastic morning being radio stars! The children loved the experience and we would like to say a very special thank you to the two parents who agreed to be interviewed live on air. The broadcast has helped generate a number of donations from listeners which we really appreciate.

Zoë’s Place Memorial Garden updateOur new Memorial Garden is now open! We are hugely in debt to the funding and hard work of staff from TSB who have created this wonderful space for our families to use. They have raised a spectacular total of £15,000 from a myriad of fundraising activities and events held by staff in branches across the region which they have donated towards the development of our garden.

It was great to meet up with Paul

popped into our Hospice with a

cheque for £2,500. The money

was raised by entering a team

families into the Liverpool Santa

was raised with 50% of the

proceeds coming to Zoë’s Place.

Neil FitzmauriceLiverpool’s actor and comedic star of Phoenix Nights, Neil Fitzmaurice took to ‘The Black Chair’ to be tested on the films of Robert De Niro for Celebrity Mastermind and we were over the moon to hear that his chosen charity was Zoë’s Place. Despite being in last place after the first round, Neil went on to victory in the General Knowledge round finishing with a score of 16 points. Neil has very kindly donated £3,000 to our hospice so we would like to say congratulations and thank you for your support.

Frames Snooker ClubWe had a fabulous night at Frames Snooker Club in February and came away with a cheque for £2,300 for our Hospice. The money was raised by the staff and members of Frames who fundraise all year round and

have supported Zoë’s Place for a number of years. Thank you to Paul and Ellen who provided the wonderful entertainment. Your support means so much to our Hospice particularly as we celebrate our 20th Anniversary. xxx.

Terry & Babs CunliffeThe wonderful Terry and Babs Cunliffe from Bickerstaffe have once again raised a brilliant amount for Zoë’s Place through their Christmas lights collection. Every year they cover their house and garden in a myriad of Christmas lights and decorations and have visitors from all over who come to see them. This year they have raised a spectacular £1,556.11 for our special babies. Thank you Terry and Babs xxx’.

Rotary Club of Formby

A huge thank you to the members

of Rotary Club of Formby who have

donated £1,625 to our Hospice as

a result of monies raised at their

The Liverpool County Premier

League has a long history of

supporting worthy local causes

with funds raised from program

sales. We are very grateful to the

league who chose Zoë’s Place to

receive a cheque for £400.

Crescent Court

Since 2005 residents of Crescent

Court Residential Home have been

fundraising for Zoë’s Place Baby

Hospice. They have organised a

number of events including table

sales, card making, raffles and

cake sales to name but a few.

During that time they have raised

a grand total of £8,409. We would

like to extend a huge thank you to

all the residents of Crescent Court

past and present.

The wonderful folks at

Barclays Ormskirk invited us

down again to sell some of

our merchandise and some

delicious cakes they had

baked just before Christmas.

It was there that we met Pat

and members of Lydiate

Parish Art Club who have spent

2014 collecting funds for our

hospice which was matched by

Barclays Bank and totalled a

wonderful £430 and through

Pat we have met Liz from

Springfield Nursing Home in

Aughton who have chosen

us as their charity of the

year for 2015. Thank you all

so much for your support!

Arriva North West

We were absolutely delighted to hear that we had

once again been chosen as the beneficiary charity

for the annual Arriva golf day. Over the years this

fantastic event has raised over £150,000 for our

Hospice. In addition to the financial support received

Arriva Northwest recently unveiled a bus dedicated

to Zoë’s Place Baby Hospice. The double decker

bus sporting the colours and logos of the Hospice

is currently operating on numerous routes across

the City from the Arriva Northwest Bootle depot.

We cannot thank Arriva Northwest enough for their

generosity, which means so much to our families

and special children.

Once again we had a brilliant night at the Adelphi Hotel for our 8th annual Charity Boxing Dinner. The event was attended by over 360 people who saw the Wirral CP boxing team take on the North West Select over 10 bouts. With a raffle, auction and match funding from Barclays Bank the event raised a total of £19,000.

We are so grateful again for the continued support of our fantastic sponsors, AW Byrne Contractors who have made this event a huge success that is enjoyed

by all. The support given by them has extended to work that they completed to refurbish our hospice a few years ago and we have continued to develop our relationship with the firm.

Last November, 40 brave participants from all walks of life took part in a life changing challenge across Vietnam and Cambodia to raise funds for Zoë’s Place. The challenge was a gruelling 271 mile bike ride from Vietnam’s capital, Ho Chi Minh city to Angkor Wat, a spectacular wonder of the world at Siem Reap in Cambodia. Along the way the team had to deal with broken chains, rough terrain and temperatures of over

40 degrees but all experienced breathtaking scenery and the kindness of the Vietnam and Cambodian people over the course of the 5 day challenge.

Our wonderful participants have raised a jaw dropping £194,313 to date and this has completely blown any expectations of what we might raise clean out of the water!!! So we would like to say a HUGE THANK YOU to our participants for their astonishing support.

Band will be playing in the Garden throughout the day and there’s also the chance to see falconry and duck herding displays.

Founded by Mohamed Al Fayed, the trust makes substantial, ongoing donations including much needed specialist medical equipment, play and day-to-day living essentials to many causes around the country. Since 1996, ACF has donated in excess of £3,200,000 to Zoë’s Place and this support ensures that we can continue to provide and develop our care for our children. The Trust has also recently made a specific donation to help with the purchase of an oxygen concentrator machine which is a vital, but expensive piece of equipment that helps children who suffer with very severe respitory conditions to breathe. It is such an honour for us to receive the support of ACF and we are so indebted to Mr Al Fayed and his daughter, Camilla for their ongoing support. Demand upon our services

continues to increase but through the support of ACF we are able to grow and develop our care to meet this need.

High Street Solicitors are once again supporting Zoë’s Place Baby Hospice by donating their services free of charge during our Make a Will day. The services are offered in lieu of a donation of £60 for a single Will

or £120 for a mirror Will being made to Zoë’s Place. Appointments are held at Zoë’s Place Baby Hospice, Yew Tree Lane, Liverpool, L12 9HH and run every 30mins from 9.30am. To make an appointment please contact the Fundraising Team on 0151 228 0353 or email [email protected]
